Campfires?

Hello,

 

I was just wondering, can we make fires yet? I've got matches, firewood and stones but no option or crafting ability.

 

Could someone please explain how we make fire (I feel like a caveman :P )

Cooking & Gathering Resources

 

Target Delivery: Early 2014

 

This is a system that was not completed prior to the alpha launch so is half-done. Additional work will be done and pushed when we can. This will include gas cookers (already ingame) and the creation of fireplaces. We will be allowing players to gather resources from the world, such as firewood, stones, etc... This will then be utilized by the existing crafting system.

Crafting a fireplace?

What's next, crafting tied shoelaces?

I wouldn't mind building a fireplace if there was some creativity and skill to it, but this sounds an awful lot like another time sink.

Please tell me I'm wrong and it won't be what it sounds like?

What other time sinks are there? Aside from the fact that the entire game could be called a time sink.

 

Of course if you want to survive you'll need fire for warmth and cooking, and to do so you'll have to get the materials to build a fire.

Finding the right gear, predominantly.

I have matches. Those and a forest should cover it imo. In fact, the forest itself should cover it. Matches just make it a hell of a lot easier.

If you want the deluxe indoor model complete with chimney, stone cutting (i mean shaping, not mining) and physics based construction could be on the menu. Now there's a time sink worth sinking time in to.

 

Seriously you guys, crafting has been done. Be original.

Don't get your reasoning. It will take no time at all, provided you have an axe/matches, to build a fire. 

 

When you're cold or hungry, the necessity for an axe or matches may drive you into a town, leading to a player contact or fight with zombies. Needing things is the engine that drives this game. People don't gather at the NW airfield because they are aviation enthusiasts. They go there because they have needs. 

 

If getting the right gear is a time sink, I think probably the entire game is a time sink. It's a survival/scavenging game with elements of bot monsters and other players who have needs. Of course all some people need is to hunt down other players, which could also be called a time sink. Personally my best fights have come because I needed something and shit got complicated when I tried to get it.

 

Regardless, this feature has been part of DayZ since before the stand alone was even dreamed of.

Good, I was worried I would have to go find 12 stones and 5 logs.

So I can just pick up dead stuff from the forest floor or so?
