How NOT to KoS?

Recommended Posts

Okay, so I really don't like KoS. And don't want to be killed with further interaction and I don't want to kill the other, too.

Even if I was a bandit, I couldn't get any gear by KoSing at the moment, because pissed of players are logging out way too fast ;).

But... I don't really have a solution at the moment. If I just ran into a guy with a m4 and lower my own weapon and say that i'm friendly, I can't know, if he will shoot or not. He doesn't know it about me either.

There is just no indicator for KoSers and meeting another armed player is gambling. So the rational solution is shooting first. And the people just will do, because there is a lack of Reason, which includes to see safety in the deescalation of the situation, by gaining peace and get out of there in one piece.

But in DayZ the players would shoot, even it was a mexican standoff.

Are there some people, who don't KoS, if they come too close to a well armed player? How do you survive this situation without shooting?

I just go backwards slowly for letting him know my purposes.

Saying "friendly" is like saying: "hey, you can't know if I'm lying or not!" n stuff like that.

tho I think the most valuable method for don't get yourself killed by another player is to kill him instead. ; ) not always but sometimes.

Approach places with the assumption that they are insecure, don't go straight for the loot spots, peak around every corner, observe people for a few minutes in case you spot them and then decide how you want to handle the encounter, if you stay in cover and about 100m away from the loot hot spots you usually won't run into other players in situations like you've described earlier.

If you see another armed player and he's looking right at you 20m away from you it is a messed up situation where you either shoot first or risk getting shot, that's the point of the game.

i play very cautiously, I was following a guy for a while and he had a standoff with another player, and they both raised their m4s and fired giving me a bunch of free gear, The last thing you want is to run into someone face to face, so if you really oppose Kos then you need to stay back and analyze situations carefully.

Righ now to not KoS, pack food and drinks and head north to never meet anyone.

If you do not want to KoS in Balota and south cities then prepare to be shot in face alot.

Well, you're right. The only threat in the north are serverhoppers at the airfields.

Use the search function man, every other post these days is "KOS this, KOS sux, Why do ppl KOS OMG" seriously there are 50 other posts just like yours made this week.

And you know how to survive the situation, mainly try and rob them for gear, then when they drop show a sign of respect and give them back and team up.

Ive run into 4 people so far in SA and not one has tried to KOS, and neither have I.

There is no real good way to identify a friendly player opposed to a hostile one.  Sometimes you just have to hope you have the upper hand so you have the first chance to not be a douchebag.  If you see a guy in a building looting it unaware of your presence, you can attempt to communicate from outside where he can't see you.  This way you can open the lines of communication without exposing yourself to immediate threat.

Or like my interaction this morning:

I was in the not-so-secret military base east of Pustoshka. While looting one of the two barracks, I noticed a guy in the barracks to my right. I crept up on him and cornered him, he had no melee weapon and an M4 without a magazine. So he was pretty harmless. I struck up a conversation with him. He was completely honest, stating that he was in a hurry to find a melee weapon or ammo to kill me, because naturally he assumed I was hostile.

His honesty saved him, and I mentioned that I'm not a typical kill-on-sight type of guy. So after a short conversation, we finished looting the base together. I ended up giving him some ammo for his M4 (I'm using a Mossin anyway), plus a couple other goodies like my old splitting axe. I made out with a nice new Fire Axe, a full medkit, and some charcoal tabs. I offered him food and water, but he declined as he was well stocked. We said our goodbyes and parted ways.

But honestly in this grim world, there is no way to tell.  And even if we came up with some way to identify carebears over bandits, people would exploit that to be better bandits.  So in actuality, you just have to hope or play it safe and avoid everyone until you have the upper hand and can negotiate on your terms.

This thread is not crying on KoSing, neither it is a beg for a "fix" of this phenomenon.

It's just a discussion about solving situations  with other players.

I don't KoS... how do I survive this situation? LOL... I don't...

I regularly get killed up in the north by any player that sees me first

I regularly get killed by any server hopper that jumps in the same barrack where I'm looting after I accurately checked the area

I regularly get killed on the coast even when I wear just a tee shirt

The key to survive in DayZ is to NOT hesitate. No matter how friendly you are, you WILL have to shoot someone, or die and lose all your shit.

The only solution to avoid dying but probably get yourself into a fight, is to try to disarm the other guy. If you can't sneak past him and/or you want to interact with others, ask him to lower his gun, even drop it, with your gun aiming at him

If he complies it's your choice to befriend him or just leave him there and leave safely.

If he doesn't comply, light him up, or try to run away.

I stay undetected and wait for the player to get far away enough from my position. if he does spot me and he's far, I just sprint to the nearest set of buildings/trees. if he gets a jump on me and doesn't shoot straight away, I greet him in chat and keep doing what I had been doing before he showed up to show I have no interest in him or his gear. works 100% of the time. doesn't work only when the other player has already decided he'd kill me, and there's no way of getting away. usually in such cases I don't even see the player because he spawns behind me or shoots me through a window
