What am I doing wrong?

Recommended Posts

I bought the game yesterday, and teamed up with my friend (also a new player). We looted Cherno, well, what little loot was there and eventually headed north with the help of my friend on Skype who has a wall map of Chernarus :).

It was all pretty interesting until after about half an hour of walking through the countryside I became sick and my friend fell unconscious due to dehydration. After 3 hours of being alive, we found no guns and barely any food or water. I was eventually clubbed to death by a zombie trying to figure out how to blood bag myself. Am I doing something wrong or is loot incredibly rare? Motorcycle helmets are more common than edible items. Guns are nowhere to be seen and I have to hike for half an hour to get anywhere.

I feel that I'm not having as much fun as I should. What am I doing wrong?

What did you eat on the way north? And the food system and thirst are a bit sensitive at the moment.

A rotten kiwi, the only choice I had.

Rotten fruit = Bad!

Find wells and drink from them to the point you're not thirsty any more, food can be scarce but really not that bad imo. In any case try to stock up on the essentials before heading out anywhere far.

I knew it could lead to sickness, but to be honest I was curious about what would happen :p

Charcoal tablets will cure food poisoning afaik, if you don't have those you will eventually pass out and die.

Dont drink till your full, eat as much as you have 1st then drink till your full, or you will be full of water and no food (not good)

Eat and drink reguarly, look out for water wells on the map http://dayzdb.com/map/chernarusplus#4.050.062

You will see wording saying you are healthy if you eat and drink well and dont get sick. keep yourself healthy by eating n drinking alot

Just an FYI, if you didn't figure it out yet, you can't blood bag yourself, another play has to give you the blood bag.

. Am I doing something wrong or is loot incredibly rare?

Loot currently doesn't respawn, either do zombies so... The only time they do respawn is when the servers resets every 4 hours or so..

If you hit a town where there are zombies and the doors are still closed then it will still have loot, I tend to use this rule whether or not to spend an hour looting a spot or just move on up the road. The server hopping is becoming a pain as I have hit a couple of military bases and always seem to find an m4 but never any ammo as ammo is harder to find. It is obvious thet the hoppers are clearing out the ammo this way.

You tend to find the mosin rifle in schools and cars and the pistol and m4 in military spots.

Whenever you have a symptom, such as "my stomach hurts" or whatever, check here:

To get information on whats causing it and how to cure it.

Note that taking the wrong medicine can sometimes worsen the situation!

Don't take those anti bio tic things.

They're anti biology and therefore all things natural, like us humans (they can cause serious harm).

I thought this game was set in Russia, not America ;)

Bludy, you're probably not doing anything wrong (apart from eating rotten fruit then walking for 3 hours with no Water) it's just about big learning curve, for everyone.

find out where you are with the road signs, get a bit of food and water and head to the nearest military base or the nearest airport. That is where the fun begins.

If you find a water pump drink untill your survivor says that he/she is full etc.

I dont think the survivor "says" he is full

but just press tab to open the character screen

And when you are no longer thirsty, the green "thirsty" note disappears from there, that's how you know

The character most definitely will tell you when (s)he is full.  (S)he'll say something like "my stomach feels really full".  This will happen on both eating and drinking.  If you only eat / drink till just after the indicator disappears, you'll be eating / drinking constantly and listening to your character complain the entire time.  If you eat / drink till the character says they are full, you won't hear a peep about how (s)he's hungry / thirsty for at least an hour.
