superfluidity 14 Posted December 28, 2013 Allow me to reestablish myself, I am a noob. I never played the Mod and (like all of us) am new to the standalone. I am aware there are features of the DayZ mod that have yet to be implemented in the Standalone (as well as all new features, I'm sure). I have stumbled across great gear and have lost it just as quickly. To date... I have only fired on a "live" assailant, once. I will say... I have learned quite a few lessons about staying alive in Dayz and the potential, other survivors have for betrayal and mindless brutality. The most important of which? Stay AWAY from military areas and airfields. At least as long as I am playing solo. Thus; I am not the most trusting... but I certainly am not out for blood... if I have the upper hand... I tend to let strangers go... and I watch them go... before I turn my back. That said. I have sneaked, crawled and darted my way into a large town... the one with two fire stations, one in town the other right on the outskirts. Within it I have found a plethora of supplies. At the moment I have, most notably; A Mosin. No Ammo yet. Two FNP45s... my equipped one has a red dot sight. Four Pristine Magazines and 102 rounds of .45APC. Plus a backpack(small hello kitty style) FULL of food, soda, water and medical supplies... Oh.. and a slightly used Fire Ax... poor zeds never saw it coming. I am feeling pretty confident. But now... I don't know what to do. And so, I have stumbled upon a DayZ Paradox: What is the point of DayZ? Is it to loot? Is it to survive? Is it to loot to survive, to loot another day? I love the complete lack of RPG elements. Too many post Apocalypse games lean on a RPG/Leveling system to supplement their players' interest. DayZ seems like a much more convincing representation of what surviving in Post-Apocalypsia would be. It is based on logic and therefore... you can use your head for problem solving... without having to filter your thoughts through some RPG-dynamic cheese cloth. Anyway... what do I do now? Wander? And if wandering is my only option now. Will we be able to eventually build a base camp? Will clans be able to commandeer towns? Will there be dedicated servers that save overall progress to the environment, only resting loot? My brain is exploding with the possibilities but for now... What do I do? super
ryzoh 44 Posted December 28, 2013 the core thing on dayz is surviving, but its a open world buddy, do w/e u want otherwise its a ALPHA game, there is a lot lack of features and they will be implemented asap.
Khad (DayZ) 293 Posted December 28, 2013 I can just share my way of experiencing the game. But I don't really see a sense, too. 1. Im spawning on the coast. If I am near balota, I will loot it and hope for a useful weapon. 2. Now im heading towards north ASAP. Finding some food and more basic gear to survive.3. I team up in the lower north with my friends. 4. Looting towns between the Airfields and Military Bases. We're now fully equipped. 5. Getting shot - hopefully in a nice fight.6. Repeat. So... if you are in the north and if you are fully equipped... it would be smart, to stay in the small villages up north, establish a camp and only go out for finding food. But... looking like a soldier and just sitting in the woods is really boring. And so even it isn't compatible with some roleplay, you will wander and search for some risk. You could try to bring peace to balota or hunt down freshspawn-killers 8D. Or you could try to survive a night on the top of Green Mountain... but... in fact there is not pretty much to do, then gearing up as hell and looking for your adventure... it is just freakin' hard to figure out, what your adventure will be... and most time.. you don't want your adventure to happen.
Whatsausername 119 Posted December 28, 2013 I remember succumbing to this dilemma in the mod, has not been a big issue yet in SA though. My suggestion, if you want to avoid being called "That asshole who shot me for no reason," go explore some of the cities, help out fresh spawns. You could try pvp, (Not shooting unarmed people on the beach, or barely geared people) Just a few suggestions, but really just do whatever.
BelMarduk 169 Posted December 28, 2013 Welcome to the game, and welcome to Elektro (thats the city with 2 fire stations).I do suggest seeing the sights of Chernarus, it is a beautiful map. For now, wander around and meet people. No sense in getting attached to your gear, as its DayZ. There will be alot more content added. Eventually there will be some form of base building. Though to what extent I do not know. The way the servers work is a 'public hive' meaning no matter the server you connect to, you're character, equipment you are carrying, and complete status of your character (health and location) go with you. However, when base building comes along, you're base will be server specific. Same with vehicles, there will be vehicles on every server, but say you park one on a server and logout, that car will not be in that location on another server (though will remain at that spot on the server you parked it on... unless someone finds and steals it).
AndehX 7 Posted December 28, 2013 For me, the most entertaining thing to do in DayZ, is to gear yourself up, and then go north and kill other players who are similarly geared. Pretty much everywhere north of Zernogorsk you will be killed on sight. Geared or not geared.

What do I do? super Day Z is pretty easy to win actually, log in, look around for like 30 seconds, log out. Voilà! you already survived, you won. But if you want a deeper experiencie, set objectives yourself, try to acomplish them and prepare for inconveniences. This is what the game is for, you never now what can happen to you, and how things can (and will) go wrong. Dozens of time I logged in just to do a simple thing that I thought would not take me more than 30 minutes and 6 hours after Im finding myself in the middle of nowhere wondering how the hell did things gone THAT wrong. But that's the fun of this. Time to go for those military bases I suppose.
superfluidity 14 Posted December 28, 2013 (edited) Just bumped into two guys dealing with a zed. I whipped out the Frenchie and shot it dead(er)... the two guys immediately turned, axes raised and advanced on me... long story, short; after a friendly, soothing chat, I convinced them I wanted to help...I gave them an extra pistol and told them the best place to get ammo for it... felt good. It was probably your gun that convinced them. Otherwise, you probably would've got the axe. :P
superfluidity 14 Posted December 28, 2013 Odd thing happened: I ran into a fully decked out dude... he took a pot shot at me with his Mosin... he missed and I emptied a full mag of .45apc into him. I began to inspect him.. grabbed his rifle... LOTS of ammo and supplies... then I noticed a countdown in red... I was being disconnected! When I respawned... I lost everything I looted after the fight... I even had the ammo I fired back...what happened? Did I tango with a server admin... and he kicked me out of spite? Combat logged? I dunno.. but I was slighted!he was greedo, too... because HE SHOT FIRST!

Zogvarn 118 Posted December 28, 2013 Yea its usually a server reset that does that or a internet hiccup somewhere. As for the OP's original question, I advise checking out and exploring the whole map. Become familiar with the various routes used to get between towns and the vantage points to check them out before moving into them. Same goes for the military bases. Though that is more dangerous since most military bases/airfields are considered to be free fire zones. Most people in the north/northeast are very careful and don't trust others easy. But they will often talk to you once the initial "Will he shoot?" dance is over. The northwest side of the map can be....well, lets just say those folks are a different breed. When/if you get bored from exploring solo try to find a friend. Either you will get into a pretty intense situation and start back at the coast or you'll from then on have someone to play with. Welcome to Dayz

Barracks in top of Lockers, Police Station, Barns, Fire building, Airport Tower. Shotguns are not yet implemented. So, no. Odysseus (DayZ) 43 Posted December 28, 2013 I've been playing with a fellow forum member, here, and we've had fun just looting a town and saying, "What's next?" We're gradually moving North West, we've not encountered any people, at all. I haven't a clue what we'll do if we actually run into someone... I don't look anything like a bandit (yellow rain coat, gray pants, red hat), so maybe I don't get gunned down senselessly.
