How to open / view the map?

I've googled to no avail so

 

Got a map ( that says is full map of chernarus ) and it's in pristine condition but for the life of me I seem not to be able to figure out how to view it or open it? 

 

How can I view the map?

Equip it like you would a weapon or can of food to eat it, and use it.

Put into hot bar slot and press the slot N° key.

i saw in a youtube video the guy had a red line going across his map showing where he's been and where he's at. is this a typical map? or some other fancy gadget? it's not a GPS, it was a full screen map.
