Do supressors work?

Recommended Posts

The current gun sound on the M4 seems to be what it should be with a silencer. Since there is no unsilenced sound, you can't hear the difference.

Silencers do work.... If you shoot silenced guns near a zombie it won't attack you.

Didn't work with me. When I use my M4 with a silencer every zombie in the area comes a-runnin'.

With that said, my silencer is "badly damaged" so perhaps it flat out doesn't work when it gets that degraded.

Silencer is non-effective in the game as is. For the silencer to work you need silenced ammunition, which is not yet implemented in the game.

To my knowledge shooting with unsupressed round would damage the suppressor, but in DayZ it does not. I've also been doing some testing ingame, and the suppressor has no dampening effect on the sounds from normal 5.56 rounds.

So as it stands, the suppressor is useless for anything other than a cool look on your M4.

This is 100% untrue. Just google "subsonic 5.56" and you will see why. The problem with 5.56 in particular is that it is an extremely light bullet. A subsonic 5.56 round would have trouble even hitting a target at 200m, because the slightest breeze will throw it off course. Anything further than that, and not only are you unlikely to hit the target, it won't even have much penetration power. A subsonic 5.56 round is not even powerful enough to cycle the bolt of the gun. Hence why only very few specialty manufacturers make them.

The purpose of a suppressor is to a: conceal the original source of the shot - not the supersonic crack - and b: protect the hearing of the user.

This. I like when I run into people that know what they are talking about. The release of gas at the end of the barrel is what causes the initial sound and that is what a suppressor suppresses. You don't need special ammo for that so I really hope it is true the devs are shit canning that.

^^^What those two said.  And yes I've tested it and there is no difference between the two sounds. I'm sure they'll get it right eventually, just not on their priority list.

In arma you normally need suppressor and sd rounds for the full benefit. I haven't seen SD rounds yet.
