Idea to add realism and halp against KOS; ammo reloading

Recommended Posts

I'm not talking about magazines or firearms, but ammunition specifically. I would think that in a real Dayz situation, ammo wouldn't just be laying all over the place. It would be very rare ala Road Warrior. What if the only way to get ammo was reloading, whereas people would have to find or make the dies, powder, brass and bullets necessary to manufacture ammunition? If each round were rare and precious, players would be hesitant to waste it on other players, especially newly spawned players that wouldn't have any loot worth wasting ammo on. Zombies would become more dangerous as even well equipped players would be hesitant to waste ammo on them.

Just like it seems natural that cars would be common in a massive depopulation, but gas rare, it seems logical that there would be as many guns as there were pre zombies, but that most of the ammo would have been used up.

halp

DOH! Saw that when it popped up in the Radio Chatter. That's what I get for getting all exited when I post an idea.

People wouldn't realistically find loose powder, empty cases, new primers, and unfired bullets... and then you need powder scales, presses, dies, etc etc etc. Not to mention a place to do all this.

It just doesn't add up, too unbelievable for me.

And the fact that if you ever introduced these tools you would have groups manufacture thousands of bullets out of thin air so to speak. The ratio effort : profit is too far from realistic for the game, you just have to look at the current spawn ratios and probabilities in the scripts and of course the endless and quick resupply of those spawn points.

I like this concept, Gews has pointed out a valuable point.  I think however interms of DayZ crafting system it would be fun to tinker with if you were able to go in depth.  With the amount of weapons in alpha it would be feasible to simply have reloading stations in areas around the map in which you could find an armory.  These stations would offer lootable items yet rare for reloading your own ammunition to include dies a press and so forth.  You could apply the items in hand to the reloading table and have it conduct auto measurements for you.  As the crafting system expanded in later stages you would have to go more in depth with measurements but this would offer the possibility to fine tune the rounds you were putting into your weapon.  The longer a servers uptime the less ammunition however recovering your shells in a stackable sense like rags ingame say 1 inventory slot could stack 15 shells would make sense to take to a reloading table would be quite immersing.  With the depth in which SA is touching on for crafting this would have good use you would just need foundations and locations laid to reload properly.  I do not think this would stop KOS, but the benefits for further exploration and crafting would offer a top notch experience.

My thoughts,

Wasn't something like this done in Fallout New Vegas? Being able to craft special ammo and such?

So i have a similar suggestion to this, which is also an attempt to reduce amount of people shot on sight. Rather than reduce ammo spawns (they could do this aswell). reduce M4 spawns, i dont like it that anyone who hops on a low pop/ just restarted server can spawn at balota, walk in and out with a fully geared up M4 and 3 full mags, i want it so they walk into balota, find 3 pistols of differing ammos and have to think about which one to carry, MAYBE this is yet to come as only 4 weapons are in game at the moment (M4, Mosin, .357, FNX). If they were to only find 3 pistols and only 10 shots or so for each it would mean the difference between spraying down a group of people from 200m away and still having a lot of ammo leftover and being more tactical to conserve ammo.

This idea of an ammo crafting system would be good, just i think it would be difficult to implement, i think it will often be ignored by players who realise it is taking up too much space for the amount of ammo you get out of it, the would probably just prefer to carry more food in those slots

If you need am example of this just hop on a server at 11am with 5 people on it or so, walk into balota, you may find up to 4 M4's, i know i have

The amount of m4's right now is insane, but I've heard it explained that the only reason it's that way right now is that being an alpha there's just not enough objects to spawn, so m4's are everywhere.

Yeah, it probably would be difficult to implement ammo crafting. But just making ammo REALLY rare I think would help alot. KOS would have to go down for sure. I mean, you're not going to waste rounds on a new spawn when you've only got 3 in your mag. I'd rather see ammo rare than guns, because it would make sense. Same with cars and gas. If everyone were dead, those objects would still exist, but it would stand to reason that survivors would have used up most of the gas/ammo since then. Plus if people still had guns, you would never really know if that guy has a round in his mag or not. Could make for some interesting roleplaying.

Solid idea son.

I've got a few suggestions. There are several factories littered about chernaurs, I'd be nice to see if some of them, like cars could be restored and run by players, and would have to work in a chain of maybe 2-3 to make most ammo. Since most groups would probably only be able to hold one, I'd encourage intergroup trading and such.

I also like the idea of crafting your own ammo. Realisticly-wise (not a word) you would have to use some kind of Machinery along with some metal (which has to be smelted), powder and the projectile.. Now that would be pretty demanding to collect all the materials and find some kind of machine/work bench, but the reward is great. Therefore the ammo spawns would have to be nerfed down.

Another idea which comes to mind is collecting used bullets to smelt which drops whenever someone fires a shot. That would be a huge load of extra objects on the map tho..

The benefit of crafting your own bullets would definitely be the freedom to craft any kind of caliber - or even special ones like tracers etc
