Hello, I'm baby fresh,

 

I am new to this forum, obviously.  I am new to the Standalone... I guess we all are.  but this is my first time playing Dayz as well.  So far?  I love it.  This is not my first alpha... so the glitches are tolerable.  I love the concept, despite generally being bored of Zombies.

 

So, I played through a few times, got my bearings.  I was betrayed and killed by a few people swearing up and down I can trust them (they did it for a baseball bat and a bottle of water in one case)... so ... I learned THAT lesson.  

 

Now... here I am.  I have been playing it safe and moving cautiously.  It payed off, my current character is fairly kitted out, I have:

 

A huge hiker style backpack.

 

A rain coat.

 

Hunter's Pants.

 

A M4A1(no ammo or mags).

 

A FNX45 Pistol(no ammo or mags).

 

A Baseball bat.

 

A headlight with a Pristine Battery.

 

3x Standard Flashlights with Pristine Batteries.

 

A Full Bottle of water. Powdered Milk.  A can of Soda.  A box of cereal. 3 rolls of duct-tape. Antibiotics.  A screwdriver.  A wrench.  ... a fresh kiwi?

 

So... that is SOME haul for me.  The problem is... I am scared to keep playing.  lol... Two Great weapons... with no ammo or mags.  Plenty of supplies to live off of and heal myself with AND room to carry plenty more.

 

I love that this game plays for keeps... it creates a tension that I have not felt while playing a game... in a LOOOONG time.  I was almost held up by a guy with a gun... but I talked my way out of it... I thought about trying to bluff with an unloaded gun... but though better of it.

 

Anyway, enough rambling.  Any tips guys?  My top priority is to get my hands of some ammo... so I can defend myself.  Any ideas where I can get some?  Without walking out into a fire fight... that is.  Anyone want to form up and loot?  My forum name is my steam name, as well.

Welcome to the forums and welcome to DayZ. The feeling of 'gear sweats' never go away.

 

I kind of want to try and hold someone up with an unloaded gun just to see how it goes. I guess it would only work if you had a supreme advantage like they are completely exposed and have a lot to lose. If you ask them to drop everything though they would just give you trouble as losing that much gear is pretty much a death sentence anyway.

 

If someone was to hold me up, unless they just wanted something reasonable like some food or meds, I would give them a fight for it. Even if I die for my troubles, the knowledge that they may bleed out or they attracted the attention of other players with the gunfire, makes me sleep easier.

Thanks guys... I feel warm and squishy.  Funny enough... I have 24 shotgun shells... equal parts Buck and Slug... Guns and ammo a plenty... just nothing that works together.

 

Question:

 

Can guns be found in normal homes?  or Military locations only?  Should I bypass the risk of looting towns, if I have enough food and meds?  What I really need is ammo... or a shotgun...

Im rather new myself, but Ive got my bearings quickly, if you ever want to get on Razer Comms with me and a friend send me a message. Also, I havent seen a shotgun in the game yet, just lots of M4s. Most ammo will be in Military spawns. .

Oh Lord... I just found a silencer and a CQC butt-stock for my M4... AND a chest holster for my .45 .... and a ballistic helmet... my dude... LOOKS serious.  Too bad, I still don't have any ammo.

I found m4 ammo and clips come from mostly military bases as the m4 itself can be found all over the place. The mosin and its ammo seem to be kinda weird they spawn almost everywhere in cars in schools in apartment buildings even found one in a barn once. Its ammo is just as random i once found an ammo box for it in a supermarket in cherno on a freshly restarted server.

 

do take note that the silencer is a lie as it may be silent to zombies but it is still loud as hell, probably a bug

Check out the airfields for some ammo but be careful because theres a lot of player traffic in these areas. You really shouldnt get too scared because theres only 4 weapons in the game so they arent too hard to find if you know where to look. Ive been to the north west airfield and ive found like 4 M4s there. Try not to confront anyone because most people kill on sight. Although I have met a few friendlies its just better to stay hidden. Guns can spawn in any building but because theres not very many guns implemented yet M4s spawn in military buildings ( Air control towers, barracks, military tents, pretty much any building at an airfield.) The mosoin i belive spawns in barns but im not too sure on that because ive never found one. Hope i helped :D

I found loadsa M4s in schools and barracks, try there.

Well... I just found a 20 round mag... and went ahead and fell off a building... lol... square one.

Try to get a grip of the map. Use this to go exploring and such. Once you generally know the map it's very easy to gear up after dying.

can tell you what worked for me...  went to the airfield on a freshly restarted server, cleared out all 3 barracks and ended up with a vest, 35 slot backpack, helmet, gloves, 6 slot pants, iv starter kit, and an m4. went over to the balota town itself and went door to door jahova's witness style, found a few sodas, some canned food, an axe (jackpot), a med kit and luckily enough, a box of cereal. once i had the axe i went back to the airfield to finish sweeping the buildings (and zombies that walk right thru them xD) and found myself 2 clips of 7.62 ammo and one for my m4.

 

all in all about an hour of crawling the balota area got me just about everything i needed EXCEPT a bloody can opener <.< thing is more rare than antibiotics it seems xD place is dangerous given it's a great starting point, thus high traffic, but if you can get in, get your gear, and get out safely you're gonna be pretty well off

If you didn't know: since the latest patch you can use any sharp item (also your axe) to open tins and cans.

I had a great start last night.   I started in a city... the one with the square with rhe crashed plane.  After an hour and change of looting I had a Mountain pack FULL of soda, water, canned food an axe and a crow bar.  I found a Mosin, a bipod and a scope.

 

Man, I was happy.  Then I spotted a huge ship amd decided it was awesome and went to check it out... I was walking though some ankle high water... when I heard a sound  I never heard in game before... I wasn't sure what it wand it sounded distant to I kept on marching.  Well.... it ended up being a guy on a hill zeroing HIS mosin on me.  Sure enough a moment after I realized it... down I go.  I felt like a food delivery guy.

You can use your axe but you'll lose more than half the food out of the can
