knawx 175 Posted December 19, 2013 For those of you familiar with the game RUST you already know what I'm talking about. For those who are not, the basic idea is that every now and then a random airdrop will occur. A large cargo style airplane flies over the map and drops a package with a parachute attached to it which allows it to gently float to the ground. Here's how I think it would work. *An airdrop could occur anywhere and anytime. If the package is not collected by the time the server restarts it is wiped.*Package contents may sometimes include items that can ONLY be found in airdrops. Think NVGs, particular weapons, etc.*If a player has a radio in their inventory or if the player is within 50m of the Green Mountain Radio tower then they will recieve a message stating the coordinates of the soon to be airdrop.*When the package lands a red smoke flare is activated and can be seen from a distance. Zombie Jesus 723 Posted December 19, 2013 It would be shameless to just rip off the Rust idea, but DayZ already had a random loot hotspot with helicopter crash sites. Maybe take the idea of dynamic helicopter crash sites and run with that since it would not be a shameless ripoff from another game but would be pretty much the same concept.

I don't think RUST is the first game to ever implement an airdrop. Also, there are ways to impliment things from other games in a professional manner. Whether that means asking permission or what not. Take the Payday 2 masks that are in the game. I do like your idea of mixing this mechanic with heli crashes.
xInfinityx 44 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) Firstly, Dayz has had heli crashes, supply crate drops, and plane crashes. Battle Royale also has supply crate drops as well. So there is no "shameless ripoff". But... There has been mention of live helicopter crash (and similar events) events instead of having randomly place loot spawn. Sacriel talked about it with Dean during a Q&A. I think it is pretty obvious that random events need to be part of the finished DayZ experience. It promotes interesting character interaction and those wonderful "oh shit" moments. Personally, I would like to see NPC's like the helicopters that patrolled in Origins, and interesting things of that nature. llS3V3Nll 0 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) Go play COMMON "mmo's" to be helped by npc's...& tag names. so you can spot them easy. Edited December 19, 2013 by llS3V3Nll

The NPC's in Origins shot at you with mounted huey machine guns if they spotted you. Please son with the hardcore tough guy attitude.

So you want NPC's to help you out with airdrops? this is a "sci-fi" game too,..where, how and why the smart NPCs would want to help you out?... risky mission to help out a bunch of potential serial killers. Flagella 69 Posted December 19, 2013 (edited) I think maybe a random airdrop should be something player triggered like come on, why would a random plane drop random loot over Chernarus in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. Maybe if you get a radio and find a note that tells you a frequency to call to call in a random airdrop over a location you wanted would be a heaps cooler, maybe even choosing the loot you wanted or what sort. It's a more original and logical idea.Cause why would a plane drop shit in the middle of a zombie apocalypse for no reason Edited December 19, 2013 by Flagella
xInfinityx 44 Posted December 19, 2013 Well, logically if we can only traverse a specific area of the map, then we are either locked in via some kind of natural disaster like the surrounding environment being too heavily radiated to be survived while crossing or we are locked in a quarantine area. Personally, I think the quarantine area narrative is much more interesting and a large wall closing everyone in around the border of the map would make a lot of sense for why we can't travel other places instead of a random debug zone. but... supplies support are a common occurrence in any place where there is a disaster. It is in no way a stretch of the imagination that a government or aid entity would be dropping supplies for survivors. The reason would be to help any survivors survive? Regardless of any of these nonsense lines of questioning the point of the random events is not specifically for aid. I don't need help in the game, and I'm not asking for it to be easier. (which is why I specifically mentioned having enemy NPC's flying around) What I want is randomly triggered events to keep the game fresh for a long period of time. The radio thing is a cool idea though. Maybe those with radios could tune into a certain frequency to get coordinates for the aid so they could pick it up. I`m not familiar with any other surival sandbox games but I know that this airdrop card has been played out in several other types of media like anime and movies for example. By no means it`s an original idea. Also, I concur! I would very much enjoy these rushes for supplies and the conflict that arises in such situations. I support any good ideas for mechanics that break routine. Edited December 19, 2013 by Garainis
