Needing a can opener to open a can is pathetic

Total 20 hours on record, 40 joint with my brother and 60 with my friend and we have yet to find a can opener. We scouted for it in a lot of towns and even all of the buildings on zelenogorsk which were not looted. I only found a completely ruined one in the body of a server hopper we smashed at NWAF last night on my last 5 mins of play.

 

Either ways the future patches and all will make it possible thatt you can open things with anything sharp, right now it is currently bugged I believe.

 

The model for them is pretty small and dark-coloured, so it's very easy to miss - unless you've spent literally the whole of those 60 hours on the coast (which is picked clean of absolutely everything right now), I'd be pretty surprised if you hadn't come across any at all.

But yeah, you're right - soon it won't matter anyway, because the function to open them with sharp stuff will be working again.

I haven't found a can-opener yet and have starved to death three times. This game hates me..Or maybe it hurts me because it loves me. Having said that I logged in earlier today and tried to use a screwdriver to open a couple cans without any luck. Is it currently having issues or am I doing it wrong?

You can open a can by grinding the top of it against concrete for a minute or two without worrying about losing anything like you would by bashing it. How about a one minute, interrupt-able action to do so?

 

I think a 60 second animation that only opens the can if completed uninterrupted is a good idea. Whether realistic or not, I think it's fair to say this also comes with a chance to lose 1 "serving" of the food in the process or something. This allows you to avoid starvation, while still creating a need for can openers so that they are a valued commodity.

 

I think this is important, because if cans can be opened w/o one, then the entire notion of can opener as a tool kind of weakens dramatically. The 60 second animation is, like, okay you can call that a "penalty" but it's not like you're going to be trying to open a can of beans in the middle of a firefight. You're going to wait until you're safe anyway so I think the 60 second timer is not enough of a "downside."

I usually find myself with extra can openers and end up giving them away to newbies. Just have to be lucky I guess, but you really have to look.

even right now you can use knives, wrenches etc. i never not once had a problem with it.

 

so my proposal:

every item can open cans, but with a risk to waste its contents (content from 0-100%), so

• canopener: always 100%
• knives, bayonets: 75 - 100%
• wrenches, screwdrivers, or the like: 25-75%
• stones: 25%
• (everything else : 0-25%)

which brings me to my next proposal:

• use stones to open cans (implies grinding and hitting)

Found one can opener so far. Does need to be an abundance of them though... Keep finding pens and motorcycle helmets (although motorcycle helmets is now fixed).

Canteens, Canned food, Pens, Paper and other household items need a great number of increase (dunno if there's a server-side limit although I imagine there is). I mean... How can i go through a number of houses in Cherno to find 1 pen, 1 rotten banana, 1 rotten orange and a pair of pliers... In the largest city in the game. Praying it was to do with these authentication errors atm or servers updating. Either way. I'm quite missing the Mods drop system as of now.

There is a fix coming for this soon apparently.

I hope that some time if you use any blunt object to open something in a can, there could be a possibility of losing some of the contents from the can in case you completely smash it or the vibrations after opening it would result in a small spill about 10-20% of it.
