The tripod can be put on certain weapons like an m16 or such for improved stability when in prone, but you must be in prone or else it will actually give you a disadvantage.

I have used it myself on the Mosin, for which the 7.62 Ammo is as well, by the way.

 

But I have heard you can use it on the M4 as well.

There is no AKM (yet).
