TEXT SYSTEM V.S. ICON SYSTEM

Recommended Posts

No, it really is bugged. I know becuase last night I was eating rice, and got:

-You have satisfied your hunger (or something to that effect in green text)

-I feel hungry

.... Both at the exact same time .

I haven't verified this but as long as it isn't bugged this might provide some answers:

Having a choice would be best but personally i prefer UI to text.

Icons please!

Also, knockout timer, I realy dissagree wit hthe philosphy that it takes away from the feel of the game. Having a timer when with friends only hieghtens the desperately hopeing the timer drops to zero before your friends are killed or before your enemy finishes you off.

Everyone playing the game needs to report issues, that's what an alpha is for. Stop acting like reporting problems is against some sort of policy.

What the OP and all of you have missed is that Dean already stated the text wasn't working correctly and will be going away to be replaced by another system... but NOT icons. So the OP is telling the devs what they already know. Shall we start a slow clap for him being so insightful?

1 year. It's been 1 year of development. While I agree that the system seems bugged/unbalanced, you need to remember this is a fucking alpha build and you should find a better way to express yourself about it.

game will flop. to many "customers" will complain..

why are they selling an unfinished product...

bad reviews will poor in, game will die.

IMO It seems like a miss step and one I can't fathom why they made it.

I thought that one of the intentions of SA was to make the game more immersive and intuitive; To make the character embody the player much more. It makes no sense from that perspective to opt for text describing how the character feels over an intuitive HUD. Especially when the text is nebulously worded, What's worse, Pounding or throbbing? Feeling hungry or wanting to eat something? It does much more to draw you out of the experience than the icon system did.

Also, and take this with a pinch of salt because I'm sure it's an alpha/balance issue. I find myself gulping down drinks continuously because it's constantly nagging me to do so. There's no way of gauging accurately how pressing the issue is, nothing to show if drinking, eating or resting is making a difference to the state of my health and more warning messages mere minutes later. None of these problems were associated with a HUD based system.

Finally something has to be said to those people who think that because the game is alpha all criticism is unwarranted. There is nothing wrong with healthy criticism about a game in development, especially when many believe that certain design decisions are making the game worse, not better. I don't expect this to be a finished product, I do expect they'll do a great job of the SA when it's done but I also expect that Rocket and the team will appreciate well thought out criticism.

Agreed, and well said.

cheers :)

Is the whole point in bringing out the alpha not to find bugs that would otherwise be missed or take longer to find and get the community to report any bugs they find or make suggestions on how to improve the game over all?

So why then are the "its in alpha" patrol out in force and jumping on anyone that actually reports a bug?

Because they are reporting a "Known Issue" that has already been stated is going to change. Redundant.

Is there a summary of all known issues somewhere?

perfectly said. Also in real life you would feel quite satiated for at least 2-4 hours if you ate a complete box of cereals without milk. And you would simply feel satiated and the actual "I want to eat" would kick in much later. And zombifying hunger that makes you so hungry you cant think straight would happen even later. And your body would not start suggesting you are hungry that quick either. Especially if you are in a dangerous situation (sneaking around on an island full of lunatics out to kill you)

Also I think that rocket mentioned liking the "moodlet" system in Project Zombiod. While the game is great, I do not like that specific part. The moodlets are small icons popping up on the side (top?) of the screen gradually annoying you into focusing your attention on the needs. And I do not want that.

Here is what I want

I want a bar (abstractly or literally existing on the HUD) and I do not want to give a flying flip about that bar unless its at 30%. Then I will start worrying about starving. I do not want a message in my face for every few % it drops. And that is exactly what the dayz system does right now, gradually annoying you about your needs.

Most people and by most I mean, most, don't run 1 mile a day.  Most certainly don't run 3-7 miles a day.  15? 30?  Running burns a lot of calories.  Sure, you wouldn't stop and take breaks every 2 minutes to eat or drink so things probably need adjusted but have you guys tried walking?

I'm just curious because I know FPS players and they love to just run and run and hop and run all over the place and "get there before the other guy" and on an on.

I'm also curious of the initial dynamics.  How many of you are running all over hell's creation and how many of your are meticulously walking around.  Have you tried walking?  Do you still get hungry/thirsty stuff every 2 minutes?

you know who got it right?

braking point arma 3...its so fucking fluid and intuitive.

he should take a que from deathlyRage

this whole random text system with energy levels vs health levels and regen if food = above 80%, etc etc is fucking ridiculous.

honestly they should have focused on things to keep the game playable for alpha relese, not the perfect compass rendering like OP said.

By walking do you mean regular run speed and not full on sprint? Of course dude, ive been playing ARMA for 3 years now. But if you actually mean walking, fuck that, im not going to walk on a map that big, and a game this time consuming, this is still a game, not real life.

If they tone down the food and drink needs a bit there is no real need to run everywhere. Some games just are not suited to how some people want to play a game. That is why there are other games. Some of us are fine walking/running 3k and having it take a decent amount of time.

haha merc, you ever played BP arma 3?

I watched a bunch of videos as I was evaluating if I wanted to buy Arma 3 or not. I decided to wait for the standalone after seeing BP on Arma III.

Eat, drink, rest, don't sprint. You won't pass out. GG.

Rocket please don't casual this up. Indicators will help (but I think even these are not needed if the messaging was tuned). From playing yesterday once I figured out how it worked I didnt pass out anymore.

Protip: find saline. Protip: eat and drink often. Protip: rest and don't get sick.

It is physically not possible to pass out willingly in real life from too much running. Read this again. You can not willingly run yourself unconscious.
