You need both Arma 2 and Operation Arrowhead (also known together as Combined Ops) to play DayZ,  AFAIK  Private Military Contractor (PMC) and British Armed Forces (BAF) add in more high rez textures for certain models (some guns, player models, some vehicles, ect) but are not needed to play (or enjoy) DayZ.

 

Just did a quick look at steam and can see the confusion, Combined Ops is the Bundle of Arma2 and Op Arrowhead, and sells for about $25.  Complete collection includes Arma and all DLC for around $40.  So that's probably your confusion.

 

I'd honestly wait a bit, Current guess is that Standalone will be out in a week or two if the Bug Smashing gods smile upon the Devs, that and they have Arma2 on sale almost every other week on steam (you pretty much JUST missed one such sale).

That's the Arma developers site.  It's 100% legit.  I had the steam version and never used it via steam so you'll be fine.  

 

Damn that's a good deal.  I might finally pick up the dlc. :)

Yeah I'd go with the non steam version while it's on sale.  Shouldn't matter if it's on steam or not (you can add it to your steam library anyway if you did use it)  If your into combat sims you might want to get the Complete Collection while it's on sale to snag all the DLC (I've yet to really sit down and play Arma2 and OA by itself and have been told I should).

I would not do the torrent, if anything just for the safety of your CD key in case that torrent is really a key stealer. I don't have Windows 8 so I can't really help you there though.  My only recommendation would be Google or someone here to help you.  One thing that might work is doing it through Steam (far as I know you can add a game just by using the CD key if you have it, and possibly download the game through steam), then again I don't really know how far/close you are with the download or getting the Key.

I don't know too much about that, I just bought from bistudio.com for like 5$ and added it to my Steam.

Anyway, good luck.

After you download and install run everything to at least the menu.

Get the arma 2 beta patch version 103718 is the one your after. 

Dayz is a mod, so you need to download that or just use dayz commander to get.

Dayz mod is the first one in the install/update tab of commander, just click install for version 1.8.0.3.

All the other versions of dayz are mods and most are about 1-2 gig to download 

Refresh servers and then join it  The mod and game version should be white, if one is grayed out you need to install or update.
