Seasons/weather

Recommended Posts

Sorry if its been suggested before but what about having real harsh cold winters where certain loot like warm clothes etc are more important, fires needed to thaw out water and on the other hand a summer where must drink more etc. For example if you're standing still but in warm clothing on a sunny summer day you must drink like your running/jogging. If this was in the sa they could announce the weather report via radio causing a scramble for certain loot types?? Just an idea...

It could be nice.

I don't agree on the weather report though. Who would do this in the middle of a zombie apocalypse?

Would have to agree, not many people would take up the mantle of weather man post Z day, not to mention most of the equipment not being online.  Though if the radio network is set up correctly and weather behaves almost like it's real life (as in it moves) then survivors could radio in to the friendly stations that are playing music and what not and say 'Oh, bad storm in Berezino heading south west.'

From what I was told, for seasons they would need to basically make a copy of the map for each season (winter, fall, spring, summer, though some argue that spring and summer can use the same map).  Retexture the ground and buildings, replace the trees and their leaves with fall and snowy versions, change the zombie textures slightly (don't know about behavior, but make their 'clothes' look more winterized, snow/mud on their shoes and shoulders, frost, ect).  I would like seasons in at one point (I would love if they were 'Real Time' (and I don't mean a real time transition, more of a it's winter in game when it's winter in real life) rather than a spring one week, summer one week, ect.

Seasons won't be coming into the Standalone due to engine related issues but different weather patterns will play a role so seasons won't be entirely necessary.

Ivan Buchta

Will we see, in future maps, full seasons with a wide range of temperature swings and weather patterns? (Snow, trees changing, etc.)

"It is something we would like to achieve in the future, but it is nothing to be expected any soon. We are aware of the possibilities this would bring to the gameplay and it's something I would personally love to see in the Real Virtuality engine one day, but we don't have the appropriate technology to facilitate seasonal changes yet. However, judging from my last meeting with the design team, players will already have enough to deal with without seasonal changes: temperatures drop during the night, clothes and boots may get soaking wet and combination of both can decimate survivors quicker than a group of raging bandits. :)"

Has been suggested a lot and makes sense if the topography allows it.

...because we still have telefone, internet, tv and whatnot in an apocalypse.

A glimpse towards the skies from time to time tells the weather good enough unless the devs fuck up the script and if one doesn't always look shoot players from araf with a scoped weapon ( you know..a scope narrows the field of vision and makes it difficult to look at the sky ). That's the guys with a ring shaped imprint around one eye...

Next step = Creating a full body suit that simulates weather conditions.

Someone make it happen.

And pain, too...and bleeding...

It'd be nice to see all the seasons in there with the ability for server owners to choose which are in their server, how frequently the seasons change, etc. This would really get weather to affect(wrong effect/affect?) gameplay like Rocket wanted.

And death.

That might make people think twice before shooting somebody.

Awesome, I've been thinking much along these same lines lately.

Here was my thinking-Remember those VR helmets from back in the day ('80s&'90s)? What a joke, right? Now if you'd asked me a few years ago if we'd ever see another I'd say very unlikely. But now we have this Occulus Rift.

Also, I'm intrigued by Smellovision from the '50s. For those that don't know, essentially certain smells release into the theater that correspond with the scene and the purpose is to enhance the experience. I wish I could have been alive to experience this for myself to know if there might have been any potential with it. I'm guessing the reason it never became ubiquitous is because it was never implemented properly.

Imagine a sort of counterpart to a hypothetical Occulus Rift, however instead of providing visual information to the eyes, this device sits comfortably over your mouth and nostrils and provides temperature and olfactory information.

With changing the temperature of incoming air, a device could perfectly simulate elevation change. For instance, one would feel the true effect of sitting on top of Black Mountain. The air reaching you mouth and nose would be cold, dry and thin. A device might be able to adjust CO2 and oxygen levels to simulate elevation change.

Imagine catching the slightest wiff of decaying flesh. The device can simulate air currents so you even locate the direction. As you approach the body, the scent becomes stronger until you're beside the body and the smell is almost too much to take. You loot that body quickly and back off.
