What if Dayz was free to play?

Recommended Posts

Some F2P games get it right but most are nasty money sinks so most people with jobs tend to stay away from them. Hearthstone is F2P and is manageable without spending any money but its slow. Path of Exile gives nothing but cosmetic items to players for cash. Creating a F2P game that becomes unplayable without paying would break the spirit of F2P. The point of those games is that the smaller % of people paying support the daily costs of running the servers for everyone else. In that setup everyone would have to pay.

I completely agree with what you were trying to do with your suggestion, though. There needs to be something harsh that would keep people from being relaxed, but not so harsh that it ruins the game. I wish they would have moved all of the cities much further inland and increased the zombie spawns around the coast. It would make it harder to escape by a new person, but not impossible, and having zombies spawn near players who are within 1k of the coast would keep most veteran players out of the area. Make it a death zone where the only point is to survive back to the rest of the island where actual play takes place.

I think F2P is in general a pretty bad idea, few games do it right (LoL does it fine), companies only ever do it to make you spend large amounts of money without ever realizing it.

If it was F2P, I'd say the devs'd hardly get any profit and the fan base would die fast because they'd have to devote hundreds of Euro a year to it

Actually, I love the idea. A dollar a life. Your first ten lifes are free. Rack up significant zombie kills, earn a life.

There needs to be more rewards within the game anyway. Would this change the style of play? You bet.

My experience playing the most populated US Vanilla server at the moment has easily over fifty percent of

players not giving a damn about dying. Give em' a terminal incentive to stay alive.

I got killed by a door today, somehow i don't think people would be too happy paying money per life when shit like that happens.

Well considering most of my deaths are from bullshit ways 90% of the time, I'd give up and keep my money, thank you very much. Why would I pay for an extra life? Is this an arcade system now?

That's not even f2p and it'd end up costing significantly more than it does now for the players, with more people hacking and killing on sight than ever before.

The best part though, is that it would never happen, since it's a mod of a game, and even if it managed to exist like that, mods of DayZ would always be there.

What game does the whole "buy lives" thing successfully anyway?

sounds like a bad idea.

Most games that are free to play make you wind up spending money to get entire experience.

some exceptions would be a game like league.

You really only spending money on cosmetic items.

I was just day dreaming about how Dayz would be quite good as a free to play game. The difference being that you purchase characters rather than content. Lets say £5 to buy one character and you can only have one at a time.

It would add the much needed value to your own life and make people a lot more cautious. You could give people a few free lives when they first start to let them work out the game, or maybe not.

I dont know what exploits there may be but one obvious problem is you would get massive rage from casual gamers each time they get killed. Also the game would have to run perfect with no glitch kills etc which makes it unlikely.

Any thoughts?

No thanks.

Anyone that has played many so-called F2P games know that F2P really means F2P2W, or Free-to-Pay-to-Win.  Free to play games are a cancer eating away at the gaming insdustry that has been spreading far too quickly.  It might be different if free to play models chose to allow only cosmetic and other non-pvp changing items to be bought with microtransactions.

I don't mind at all paying a monthly subscription to play a game.  At least everyone stays on equal footing.  But I'm not interested in dueling credit cards.

No, I want to pay once and once only for early access. Bohemia is a good developer (one of the last few), and it would dissapoint me to see them pull this bullshit.

No beans for you, friend :emptycan:

Sure, it always is kind of difficult to generalise, but you can consider those games to be an "excuse", so to speak to have a bult in "but what, it's not all about te money" thing. However, this most likely are titles which are not very expensive in development and probably low end, aiming on low budget folks.

There's noothing wrong with paying a fair price and getting a full game in return.

Wow, you really don't play any F2P games, do you?

MWO - F2P not aiming at low budget folks. You can get things in less time spending money or grind it all the way out. Lot of cosmetic options people actually do pay to have.

DDO - F2P not aiming at low budget folks. Was dying as a subscription service but went F2P and has been going strong ever since. No realy P2Win items nearly everything is a time saver. You can actually grind out and unlock everything in the game given time and effort but everyone drops a few bucks here and there to shortcut that.

Rifts - F2P you can play the whole game without spending a dime. You will have fewer bag slots so you might make money a bit slower as you can't carry all the extra junk you would sell but a lot of that you don't need anyway.

I could go on as I play at least 3 more F2P games.

DayZ is in fact a F2P game. You don't subscribe to the server, nor do you ever purchase DayZ. You need to have the ARMA games but you do not pay for the DayZ portion of it.

You cought me there, I actually never use to play free2play games. I played a lot of free games though. On amiga there were a bunch of good free games I enjoyed, like "telekomando" and stuff. They are not called f2p because "f2p" basicaly means the monetization method that aims to sell microtransactions, not that the game is free.

So also DayZ is not f2p, its "just" free.

You get the difference if you see how professional f2p games are built around a selling machine. The inner core of a f2p game is to motivate the player to spend money.

DayZ is free to play. (Unless you mean SA.)

I see what your saying OP and its really not a bad idea. Thats not "free to play" tho lol.

Anyway if you had to buy a new character every time you died it would add huge value to life. Not sure how this would effect the game overall. It would definately make the ral dckheads shine through because if you shoot unarmed players your really f'ing them over in real life too because they will have to spend more money.

If you think KoS'ers are hated now with a system like this KoS'ers would be truly hated.

It would never happen tho becuse people would be outraged.

Also I think comparing a system like this to WarZ is unfair and you really cant even comapre a system like this to WarZ. People wouldnt be paying for a PvP advantage (like in WarZ), they would be paying for a life.

I know we are all scared to death about the WarZ fail but that faied because of the small ass map and tha ability to buy a PvP advantage. Combine the two and you have that PvP fest.
