Melee Weapons

Recommended Posts

Now that we have a few melee weapons in the game, what is you preferred choice?

Yesterday I managed to craft a baseball bat into the barbed wire variant (1 bat + 1 nails + 1 barbed wire) and was pretty disappointed in it.  It seemed to have less reach and less accuracy than the trusty hatchet, though it looked really cool.  I was also able to score a machete, which I haven't tried yet.

Have you sampled the various melee weapons in 1.8?  What are your thoughts on them, which do you prefer?

I have not sampled yet, looks really promising though!

Axe seems to be a solid safeball

Machete, all day long. I even prefer to hunt survivors, tracking them until I can get close enough to cut their fucking head off.

The machete does by far the most damage but the hatchet has better range. For zed killing it's gotta be the hatchet for me cause you trade hits a lot less.

Interesting.

I wonder if the machete one-hits viral zeds from a body shot?  Indeed, keeping them off of you is the key in a melee situation, and I found myself needing to be too close (and sometimes even missing repeatedly) with the barbed wire bat. My next jaunt into the city, I will bring the machete and see what its like, though I do thing range is the key here, and secondarily accuracy as either zed type dies in one hit to the face.

Perhaps since the hatchet is the probably the best melee weapon, and it also allows you to collect wood, it should be made more rare.  Finding one should be awesome and you perhaps should come across crowbars, and baseball bats more.

You guys sure the melee weapons have different ranges?

No, it doesn't. But if you're hitting them in the chest with a machete, you're doing it wrong. I said this only yesterday to a fellow admin. Don't crouch when melee fighting, there is no point. 1) You're already spotted or you wouldn't be swinging, 2) You have to arch your back to get a head shot.

Nothing like a stealth kill on a zed though, sneak up behind, stand up and THWACK!

Well thats what I meant about accuracy.  For instance, you can be standing and aiming perfectly at a zombie's head with the baseball bat, swing it, and see the hit poof on the floor to the left.  There is an amount of dispersion on these melee weapons such that an actual headshot is a diceroll.  Its very much reduced with the hatchet allowing headshots to be common, and I find it to be too much (in tandem with the lack of range) with the baseball bat to make it worth using.  I was wondering more about how the dispersion of the machete was, such that if it makes a would-be headshot into a body shot, would that still kill them in one hit.

Not having opened the files to look at the settings, no I can't be sure.  But it definitely feels shorter and the range at which I know I could get them with the hatchet seems to miss when you swing with the baseball bat.  I'm able to hit them outside of their ability to hit me when using the hatchet, but it feels like they have to be just slightly closer to hit them with the bat, close enough that they are now in range of hitting me.  Give the two a shot sometime and compare for yourself.

I aim in 3rd person when using a machete, I place my head just under their chin and swing once, I rarely miss. It certainly isn't a dice roll. It's jsut getting the right rechnique down for you.

Have you tried with the baseball bat?  I rarely miss too, you're talking to me like I'm some kind of noob that doesn't know how to melee in this game.  I was shocked at how inaccurate the bat was, and simply wondering if the machete is the same.  Sounds like it isn't.

Again, the bat is just as accurate as the machete, it does less damage. Even a barbed and nailed bat still does less than a machete. Practice my technique, see if it works for you.

i like the regular baseball bat it seems ppretty strong i took out 3 people in a set of barracks that had guns lol 1 guy was running into the front shooting at these guys in the back of the barracks, so i ran up behind the 1st guy killed him, then ran to the back and took the other 2 out with the bat it was awesome

i only just loaded up 1.8 and my hatchet felt like it had shorter range, has that been changed or was it the rum ?

It was Hatchet all the way ... but now there needs to be a change for me to like any non-firearm.

Survivor arms plus melee weapon equals plenty longer reach than infected (same base species) arms without weapon ... so why can zeds in 1.8 routinely out-reach players?

This wasn't an issue before the latest update, so it can't be that hard to figure out what has been broken.  Can it?

It's a shame ... there is always some negative change left in every time that is significant enough to undo the rest of the good work.

Melee combat was preferable to this with super infection in 1.7.7.1
