How to end the KOS issue!

Recommended Posts

This topic has been done to death. No making the game harder won't reduce KOS. Gear is everything, if anything it might encourage people to kill one another to get better gear to survive. Also do you feel safe knowing that the only reason someone isn't going to kill you right when you meet is that the game is harder, and he needs you to survive? What happens when you work your way to being temporarily safe? Is he/she going to kill you then?

Fact of the matter is, as long as the possibility exists that a random person you run into can at any time put a bullet in your head, they will do it, or at least you both wont feel safe. So long as players have to second guess whether or not someone will try and kill them, they will not feel safe, and will therefore result to shooting on sight.

I feel like this thread was not necessary.

I feel the same about your post

Anyway there needs to be huge advantages to not being a bandit. Not just a 5% movement increase and a worthless vest.

what 5% movement increase? There's no such bonus, it's an urban legend.

popular idea for stop KoS

less gun/ammo - WRONG!!! is make me shoot more for get more guns/ammo ;)

make encourage for cooperate - WRONG!!! is make me shoot more after cooperate ;)

Make blood type different - WRONG!!! is make me kill 10 guys instead 1 guy until I find good bloods for me :P

punish murder, make character slowly moving - WRONG!!! is ok if you running fast, is faster like bullet??? I don't think

KoS is part of game, is important part because is make atmosphere unique

fear to die is what dayz is about, KoS player provide service for make this fear 100% real and permanent

is ok, we don't want thanks, reward is after we taking loot

Yes, but that isn't because of game mechanics, that is because you enjoy being an ass and shooting other players. Don't get me wrong, I don't want banditry to go away, but I do want a few people to realize that ~I~ and not going to shoot them for no apparent reason or just because it looks like they have a bigger backpack. Hero skins are all good and fine, but could they maybe be NOT BLINDINGLY WHITE AND BLUE and easy to spot against the background? :)

At the moment the best thing is just to lay these KoS discussions on ice. There are so manny of them, and even though some might be good its almost anoying to see 5 KoS threads in every page of general. KoS will allways be, there is no way to stop it, period

I don't think people grasp what some of us are actually discussing. You will never stop KoS because there will always be someone out there that just gets their jollies shooting every person they see. However, you can stop the KoS mentality from being prevalent. You can mitigate the KoS mentality. One of the ways to do so would be to make it so that we can identify people who are more trustworthy without putting them at disadvantage. The Hero skin is somewhat of a disadvantage since it sticks out a bit more than most of the survivor skins. The good thing about it is the, "I don't want to shoot you and lose my status." it projects.

It looks like SA will have some things to discourage some of it, which is good. In real life I could get a sense of a person from body language and such as to how ready or likely they are to be lying. It isn't perfect but you can read a real person a lot better than an avatar which has no mannerisms or body language. So some sort of visual clue similar to the Hero skin would be nice.

Well, the solution is balance between the reasons to KOS or not.

Right now, you have way more reasons to KOS than to not do it.

SA will improve on that.

Yes, but people who are a bit less... Um... what is a polite term for this? How best to say this?

You are an ass. You go out of your way to kill people even when it probably hurts you to do so instead of benefiting you. Not everyone is like you. So while they will never discourage jerks from being jerks they will discourage others from acting that way.

Will I follow someone with a bandit skin, stalk them, and shoot them? Yes. Will I do the same to an unarmed person with a survivor or hero skin? No. Do I need Bandits around? Yes. Do I need people who gear up and then get kicks by shooting new spawns before they even have a weapon? No but they are fun to hunt.

In games I am the sniper/marksman of our group. I tend to fall naturally into the "overwatch" position and have no issue with patiently scanning an area over and over and keeping an eye on my allies. I will happily take an hour infiltrating/exfiltrating and hopefully keep everyone safe. Not everyone has the nature or patience for what I like to do. This means that if I had a mean streak or just plain wanted to be a dick I could happily sit up on sniper hill and kill every bambi that wandered into sight. However, I tend to have the attitude that if they look to be leaving me or my team alone, I won't mess with them. Bandit skin means they are unlikely to do so and so they get popped on sight.

Why do I mention this? Because I would never bother to go out of my way to kill someone that wasn't likely to be trying to kill me. There just is no reward in it either in game or mentally for me. Measures to tone down KoS won't affect you in the least, but they will cause people like me to actively avoid putting ourselves in bad situations or wasting resources just to kill someone who is no threat to us.

As I stated before, NOTHING will stop KoS attitude from some people, but many things will discourage it in a large number of people.

good ideas but kos is human nature, nothing can change this without changing the game to much

KOS is human nature? I'd love to see the evidence for this and also for how our species managed to get were it is today with this mentality.

The game is not hard enough? That has never been said before...

Seriously? What's hard about running through town and grabbing gear when the zeds are so easy to lose? Granted, when you first start playing it is but once you've learned how the zeds work it becomes real easy. Hopefully the SA will sort out the zed issue to make them a threat, I really hope so. I want to be able to creep through towns hiding from them but knowing if I make one small mistake I'm likely to die.

I think zeds should have a grabbing mechanic that slows you down. Then, as more and more close in your dragged to the ground and see them pull out your guts...HURRRRRRRRR!

<snip other crap>

Lolwut?

Were you born stupid or does it take conscious effort?  If you don't HAVE a gun,or any ammo for for a gun, how the hell can you shoot someone to get anything?

If firearms are rare, then there won't BE many players running around with them.

so theyll get whatever is accesable as a weapon axe crowbar and continue to kill anyway just at arms length instead of 800m

And in doing so they will put themselves in more danger and so it becomes much more of a case of risk vs reward rather than the current state of just killing for the lulz from a distance because its easy and there's no risk.

He is not an ass, im not an ass, people who KoS are not "asses". This game has envolved into something that is so surrounded by killing that its the games second nature. Im not even going to bother reading you're entire post because i have red such so manny times. All we do is to play the game to our favor, while you heroes are more of the hard trying type of guys. That said, heroes is something this game needs, and im happy you guys are out there, too bad there is so much KoS (i agree its a bad thing but its how the game is)

If you would intentionally make your own situation worse just to shoot someone then you probably qualify for the "ass" title. At that point you are simply working to make someone else's game/experience worse/harder. That is what he stated he would do.

dayz is game for pure fun or what?

I know is sh*t when you dying, I die sometime also but I realise is fear of dying makes dayz fun game #1 for all times

too much times I get killed by player when I don't have gun but I don't make post say 'we need to stop guys shoot unarm player!!!' :D

I accept this happen, is for me be more careful don't show myself and get gun ASAP so I can kill before I die

some guys never understand pure joy of pvP but that is problem for them not for guys like me :P

we love pvP, we play dayz for pvP and also some pvE but main thing for me pure pleasure is kill guys with guns and take everything we want

is not possible stop this, is permanent thing, some guys love adrenalin of combat and feel of win after murder players ;)

Yes KoS... the thrill of ~COMBAT~. Sitting on a hill shooting a new spawn who doesn't have a gun is not the thrill of combat. ;) I know you say you don't do this, but others do. I know we will never stop that.

However, a lot of KoS happens not because I or someone else really wants to kill them, but because to leave them alive means I will probably be killed. I feel bad for those guys, but there are times I have to shoot them. I'd like some options so I don't HAVE to shoot them or at least know who is more trustworthy. ;)

only way to make guys trusting you is earn trust first   ;)

is no other way for this, no clothes like hero skin, I use hero skin and believe me please in game you don't trust me 1% if I have gun and you have gun.because Someone will die and I do everything possible so is not me :D

Sometime I meet a guy we talking, he looking like good guy and we make team but is natural thing happen by accident, this is create by players not from game mechanic

dayz give all player choice, some guys choice is snipe fresh spawn other guy choice is be medic, but is choice we all have that make experience of dayz unique ;)

The thing is, KOS is essentially a form of griefing which is part of the game. If there is no reason not to do it, it then becomes the easiest way to progress (kill player take stuff save time). This in turn makes it more and more difficult for people to buck the trend and communicate before potentially killing a target - too much risk with so much KOS going on. This then saps the most interesting part of the game, the initial contact with a stranger.. do you trust them etc. Killing them out right before they know you're there is much safer.

It's a vicious circle which will only continue unabated, as players who want to interact leave the mod as it becomes more difficult to do so, leaving just KOS players.

I believe things can be added to encourage players to cooperate but without removing any of the flavour of the mod. For instance, consider the possibility of building a fortified settlement somewhere in the wilderness. To do so requires the concerted effort of 20 players working over time on the server and working together to maintain this safe (from zombies) area when constructed. Yes, other players can come and destroy it but the possibility of constructing something like this might encourage an uneasy alliance between a large number of players who don't know each other. Or they might end up just falling out and killing each other, but at least they have a story to tell!
