Item Textures

Recommended Posts

I don't think this has been suggested before, but if it has, maybe it's a sign it should be done!

Here's the suggestion:

Make different textures for the same item.

Example: Scrap metal. Sure, it's scrap metal, we all know what it looks like. But what if it looked different every time you found some? What if there were at least ten different appearances of the same item?

This could make it seem more realistic. So instead of picking up the exact same can of beans as the one you picked up earlier, maybe this one has a dent in it, or a blood spatter. It's still a can of beans, it still does the exact same thing as the other one, but it looks different.

I think it would be pretty neat to see added to the Standalone, and maybe even the mod!

Lemme know what you think.

good idea, i like it.  might be resource/time heavy what with how many items they have and plan to add in.

maybe just keep this going as a time filler if the artists have nothing to do at BI lol.

Blood splatter and faded labels are simple textures but when you're talking about 100's of items having multiple textures then you're looking at a lot of memory eating.. especially if the goal is thousands of items.

Dents in cans might require new models which requires a little more than a simple texture.

Still, I like the idea.

Scrap metal isn't just a texture, its an entire model, sure you could have shiny scrap, matte scrap, and rusty scrap, but it'd still be the same model, just different colors.  And as said above it would all add up memory wise.  Now I do believe some things will have multiple textures, but that's more to show the item's 'condition', (IE a rusted and grimy gun to show that it needs to be cleaned and maintained, not 100% sure on it but thought i saw some screen shots, might have been for something they're doing in the mod though with cans of food))

That's what I was thinking.  In essence though it's a really simple and nice idea but I think performance and the extra resources it would takes to impliment are the 2 reasons it will probably never happen.
