Gearboxes in cars & car speed

Recommended Posts

Would be awesome to have gearboxes in cars in Standalone. It makes driving a little more challenging but much funnier and rewarding. You could of course break it if you were unskilled and couldn't use it, and then find a new one like any other car part.

Another thing is that has anywhere been told that what kind of rework vehicles have gotten overall? In my opinion cars are pretty slow (highest speed you could get on road was like 110-115 km/h?, + offroad speeds are a lot slower) and cars can reach a lot higher speed than that.. (depends on the car of course).

So what do you think? I would myself be very happy to see this kind of things in SA.

Not the gearbox. Gearbox= me killing somebody because i break my car :l

But higher speeds seems great :)

Automatic "Rich person" cars should exist in higher class residential areas, so late-night cruisers and Russian clubgoers don't have to worry about changing gears.
Chenaran military vehicles of course should be gearboxed all the way. :)

But how would changing gears work? 1,2,3,etc and disable inventory hotkeys in vehicles? Number pad? ...

You know what they say! "If you can't find it, grind it"

But yes, I would love to see cars with a standard transmission. It would also be neat to see a car be unusable if someone destroys the transmission.

Granted, people would want to make it repairable, but repairing/replacing a transmission is a pain in the ass.

You could just make a "shift up" button, and a "shift down" button, maybe toss in a "clutch" key somewhere too. This would also make the dash have a purpose,

Truth, would also be neat if for certain repair jobs you would have to use a car jack and put it up on blocks.

I think the vehicle speed is so low due to server performance limits, maybe this will change with the standalone.

And yeah would love there to be manual gearboxes.

Or atleast require something such as a jack along with a toolbox to repair something such as a tire.

That makes sense.

And handbraking.

The cars are all way too slow. I don't keep track of vehicle statistics but 100 km/h is a pretty fast speed for your average ArmA sedan. The Land Rovers are very fast and can easily travel at 115 kph if I recall correctly. I remember being very happy about reaching the huge speed of 140 km/h in a black SUV.

Converting 100 km/h to mph we get... 62 mph.

Converting 115 km/h to mph we get... 71 mph.

Converting 140 km/h to mph we get... 87 mph.

Pathetic!

Top speed of the Lada should be maybe 150-160 km/h or more.

Top speed of the Land Rover... no idea, too lazy to look up the exact model. Much higher than 115-120.

Top speed of the Suburban, 158 km/h (electronically limited!)

I don't think manual gearboxes are possible with the car configs...sounds are played according to the speed and they don't really have gears so to speak.

You can already run faster than the 120 km/h limit you just don't have enough grip, the vehicles seem to drift too much while cornering if you can call that drifting...it's more like slipping on a piece of soap. A friend made a "turbo script" which could propel a vehicle to 300+km/h provided the street is straight and level and you have enough space because it's more like someone kicked you in the butt rather than the typical acceleration you would normally experience.

Automatic transmission isn't as popular in Europe as it is in the US. I don't know a single person that drives an automatic, regardless of social class.

There would probably just be 'shift up' and 'shift down' keys.

This is from BI:

Engine limits it to 120-130kph - no matter if you exceed that number in the vehicle's config.

However some addons have cars that go much faster with various scripts and editing. For example, the Jade Groove cars:

Shift up/shift down does make sense. I said that in reply to Stazik (or whatever his username is) above.

And I've never "Lived" in Europe. Pretty much my experience with European vehicles is Britains double-deck bus system and cars exported to America.

What I would like to see is your normal controls for driving, gas brake steering and handbrake, in addition to that a clutch key, e would be fine since its right next to wasd. and then have a little stick shift in the bottom right hand corner of your screen that you could grab a hold of and manipulate by holding down your left mouse click, only when you have the clutch key held down. maybe make the left mouse click the clutch to simplify things. that way you could switch between any gears you wanted, to do potentially terrible things to your transmission. For instance, if you try to shift from fifth gear to reverse at any speed you're gonna have a bad time.

The Lada Riva, top speed of about 82mph / 131kmh

Landrover 110 defender, depends on which model as theres lots of variations, but about 90mph / 144kph is realistic.

No idea what make the SUV is based on.

I was looking at statistics for a 1978 Lada 1600, one article claims 97 mph, others say 87...

SUV is 2007-2009 Chevy Suburban, saw a black one on the road recently and did a double-take.

Should've checked inside for satchel charges:D

The Lada i looked at was a only a 1300, either way in game speed is way off.
