Am I the Only Person Who "Gets In Character" ?

Recommended Posts

I'm not going to lie and say I've never broken character, or that I have a believable Cherno-Russian accent, or that I've never forgotten a fact and had to make it up on the fly.

That being said, when I play DayZ I have a persona, an alter ego, a character whose identity I assume and act through.

Artyom Slavloski

Because Rocket hasn't established the timezone/setting for DayZ past Chernarus yet, and because I have the conscious right to ignore any interpretative information discoverable in the stand alone...

My version of DayZ involves a sociopolitical group of chauvinists and "Hyper survivalists" that basically take over every crime ring that anyone cares about and puts members in key positions of power around the world (First Socialist Partymen became defence contractors in charge of KAC, H&K... the company that makes airplanes I can't remember the name of) and their continuous shenanigans distracted the world from the slowly growing zombie threat until it was too late.

FSP soldiers that lost contact with home base became bandits, FSP soldiers that remained in contact with some of Base of Operations became super organized bandits, killing and looting entire towns.

The FSP is, essentially, the zombie apocalypse x2... with guns.

So Artyom Slavloski served in the Russian Military during (I'll decide what conflict-or make one up-when people come to some kind of consensus as to what year DayZ takes place in-) and became an Orley (essentially, what all the Russian KGB agents in the Ukraine became after the soviet collapse) and developed skills beyond shooting things (negotiation, bandaging, first aid, stealth, B&E) and made his primary job kicking the FSP out of the Ukraine before Yugoslavia invaded the Czech Republic after they made trouble for his brother/mother.

Well Artyom's replacement boss (after his first was supposedly assassinated in relation to key Orange Revolution members, but really taken out by the FSP so he could be replaced) had FSP connections and decided to send Artyom out of Sevastopol and Kiev (where he had been working on busting up FSP-related port smuggling and drug trafficking) to bumfuck nowhere, Chernarus.
There was plenty of work, of course; after the American-Chenaran-Russian conflict in 2013 (or whenever ArmA2 takes place) thousands of Ak47s, AKMs, and the like were in Chernarus, creating a helluva lot of trouble for the local police.

Artyom came to know the south-east of Chernarus very well, as well as the mid-west where the Chernarus Penitentiary used to be... before the day of zombies, when everything went to hell.

That day was actually very interesting.

Artyom was sitting on his tiny bolted-to-the-wall, hard-as-bricks bed fidgeting with his satellite phone trying to call his mother (Isabel Slavloski) because he'd forgotten his brother's phone number (again) and had promised to call him on his birthday. His mother didn't pick up (which was odd, because in her time zone it wasn't 4AM), so he put the phone down and wondered why the usual yellow streetlamp light had been replaced by orange-red flickering. He split the blinds of his window and saw a squad car crashed into one of the adjacent buildings to where he was staying, on fire, with one door ripped off the hinges.

The rest of that morning and afternoon was him getting a shotgun and bean bag-rounds out of the armory, looking to see what the hell was going on, running like hell when the bean bags did almost nothing against the infected, nearly being eaten, and a lot of running east.

Now he's wandering around Chernarus, trying to establish a quasi military group of trained professionals armed well enough to restore peace to Chernarus. He has the training to lead, to shoot, and to survive. All he needs are the friends and the weapons to do it with.

His intended armor fallout_new_vegas___joshua_graham_by_mrg (that picture was bigger than expected)

Expected gear:

M9 (or any police issue pistol), shotgun, anti-terrorist worthy sniper rifle (any military grade bolt action, essentially), and a AKM for firearms.
Taser/knife/explosives.

Just because Artyom used to be a cop doesn't mean he won't throw an IED at some bandits.

Artyom Slavloski doesn't tolerate crime. Murder/rape/assault/theft = death sentence. FSP affiliation or ideology = death. Refusal to allow Artyom to "Requisition vehicles, equipment, weapons, supplies, and/or a vehicle with fuel to restore order and complete the master plan for Chernarus."

What's YOUR DayZ character?

Back story, mannerisms, likes/dislikes, favorite load out, favorite vehicle, favorite place to hang out? Why does s/he have the skills s/he does? (Good at shooting, travelling, medicine, natural leader, et cetera)

My issue is that I like to imagine that the person I'm playing would be myself in that situation. So I don't find it fun to pretend I'm Bob McSomebody, since that's somebody else's adventure. It's gotta be MY adventure, Rage's adventure, or else it doesn't feel right to me.

If I played DayZ pretending I was Applejaxc, I'd be lying under a rock waiting to die because zombie apocalypse means no internet, junk food, bad sleeping habits, or luxury expenses.

I'd go so internet-hungry I'd stalk people...for miles...and wait for them to say something and jump into the conversation and start correcting all of their grammar while heiling in the name of the Deutschland army with the most shit-eating grin in the world, realizing all of my "Smart guy" military/firearm knowledge is crap I read on the internet that isn't true... hell, even the smart-people parts of the apocalypse wouldn't benefit from me. Hell if I actually know what I'm talking about half the time I touch my keyboard, let alone understand the intricacies of blood transfusions, disease treatment...

I'd be one of the last people you'd want to team up with.

You're definately not the only one. I do the same. I used to play DayZ just like everyone else, but I got bored of that, so now I'm trying to act really realistically, stealthing around zombies, avoiding risks, etc.

The only probably with wanting to hardcore, stick-to-character-at-all-times in the SA for me is ditching things like the M16 (or other American/NATO weapons) for inferior Russian ones, if any exist in the SA (since Kalashnikovs supposedly take little maintenance and the character I described above would be better trained with them than anything "The West" uses)

"Inferior" The AK-47 is a hghly reliable weapon, it can withstand punishment, it is also relatively accurate and rarely jams

You. Me. Playing together. That's a great character.

But why the hell would a law-lover team up with a terrorist?

And why would the IRA want guns in Chernarus? Guns out of Chernarus would make more sense.

1: The AK47 is an overhyped piece of total shit that only got a good reputation because at the time of its popularization, America's warbase was politicized; the M16 was pushed through production and into untrained soldier's hands because that got the president into office and because the war demanded soldiers more quickly than they could be trained. It has SINCE been refined into a respectable, usable weapons platform. The AK47 looks good IN COMPARISON to the M16, and the internet makes it out to be the coolest fucking thing since sliced bread. But it's not.

2: You didn't get the point at all... did you miss the "If they exist in the SA" part? I was referring to weapons like the OTS22, a 9mm machine pistol that I'd rather have a M1911 compared to.

He was working with a Chernarussian ang, buying Soviet guns off them

AppleJaxc, this is my character (also DayZRP):

Name: Kyle Lott
Callsign: Raptor
Age: 26
Height: 6'1"
Weight: 240 lbs.
Hair Color: Light Brown
Eye Color: Blue

Background:
Kyle grew up in many places all over the world as an Army brat; being the son of a Master Sergeant in the US Army. Living in various climates and cultures allowed him to learn how to be flexible and able to adapt to his surroundings, giving him a wealth of knowledge and a perfect background for what was to come. His father's career and lifestyle inspired Kyle to join the Army as well once he turned 18 years old. After Kyle completed basic and served two years as an MP in Iraq, he knew he wanted to do something more in-depth for his country and so, he was shipped to Fort Bragg, North Carolina to train to become his life-long dream; an Army Green Beret.
His training left him with honed senses, combat skills and survival knowledge that would allow him to become a dependable asset in any situation. Kyle met a woman named Cassidy on a deployment to Iraq. She had been working as a humanitarian contractor there when their paths crossed and they were married a year later when each of their time in Iraq was complete. Kyle received word that he and his team were needed in Afghanistan to wrap up operations there and tie up some loose ends so he was deployed for what was supposed to be a six month stint in the sandbox. Little did Kyle know, that the Chernarus region in Russia had been lighting up on NORAD's map due to some strange activity.
Kyle was asked by his CO to advise in the mission's POA while his team went on a patrol through Al Fahar and during planning, Kyle's CO received a call straight from the White House requesting that all assets in the region be sent to Chernarus immediately. Kyle requested to wait for his unit to return, but the White House said that National Security was at stake and there was no time to wait for anything or anyone. So Kyle, along with a rag-tag group totaling eight men from the Marines, Army, Air Force and Navy were transported by C130 to Chernarus, carrying only what they had on their person.
On the flight, Kyle was briefed that the teams' mission was to investigate the situation in Chernarus and confirm or disprove the claims of 'walking dead' in the region. The mission was supposed to be reconnaissance with ROE being only fire if fired upon and the team were supposed to radio for extraction after three days. Three days passed. Then five. Then ten; all with no communication and no way to get home.
Kyle and his team needed to extract; they had completed their mission by day two, having made contact with locals and seeing the 'walking dead' phenomenon for themselves and it cost them 3 of their comrades' lives. With dwindling ammunition and supplies, Kyle took charge of the situation and motivated the men to continue to fight to survive, find supplies and reestablish communication with their commander so that they could extract and warn the folks back home; warn Cassidy. "Is she ok? Does she even know what's happening? What about my folks? What about everybody back home? Has this spread? What is going on?" - all of these thoughts constantly ran through Kyle's head, yet he was steadfast. Strong. Determined. He knew he had to keep surviving, he had to fight for his country, for his family, for his wife, for the men beside him...
