Would love to see Equipment Durability/Repair

A previous post suggested hazmat suits to avoid airborne infection that could be ripped and need to be mended; I really liked the idea of having to repair the damaged suit for it to function and thought it would be great to see that applied elsewhere and require specific tools to do so...

A few basic examples:

Guns that need to be cleaned with a cleaning kit

Hatchets and knives that need to be sharpened with a whetstone

Meat that expires... Maybe salt you could lengthen how long it stays good for?

Even water treatment tablets for non-bottled water.

Damaged backpack that holds less inventory until mended with thread and needles? Maybe spare fabric?

Possible even go so far as to be able to scavenge some materials from other items; like reverse attachments? Ie. You could take a piece of clothing and break it down into strips of fabric to repair a torn backpack?

What do you guys think?

I apologize if this has already been covered.

That sounds great to me, it would add to the realism of the game, but also make it harder to keep something for a long time, and it would force people to go back to cities for looting if they're trying to keep away from them, which I think might be good. But how would you know if a gun or hatchet is wearing out? Would you get some sort of warning, would it change appearance...? Or maybe a damage bar (like you get in Minecraft)?

I was visualizing a durability percentage, but having some sort of visual cue that would mark when it is getting low, even to the extent that you wouldn't know exactly how close an item was to malfunction would make routine maintenance a must.

Maybe not have weapons break but other negative symptoms to their disrepair like decreased damage or jamming?

I think the damage dealt by the gun should be the same, although it could lower a bit the more damaged it gets. I think the way to go is having the aim become less and less accurate, but not to an excessive point

this could find or has already found its way into the game. for example durability for shoes has already been confirmed. i like the idea to take really good care of your weaponry (after being exposed to rain, salt water, swamp-dirt) to prevent malfunctioning

also there are purifying tablets, as well as disinfactants!

How about the ability to shoot and damage specific items. Like shooting their weapons to damage them or hitting a backpack to damage some of the items inside.Or being able to shoot a backpack clean off. Then you could just nip down and nick his gear like a non-lethal badass. I'm sure the hit registration if it has been touched up a bit could do this. And it would look hilarious long range through a scope.

A weapon in a bad condition could either blow up in your face, blow the barrel, break the firing pin, misfire, be inaccurate as hell...

How about the ability to shoot and damage specific items. Like shooting their weapons to damage them or hitting a backpack to damage some of the items inside.Or being able to shoot a backpack clean off. Then you could just nip down and nick his gear like a non-lethal badass. I'm sure the hit registration if it has been touched up a bit could do this. And it would look hilarious long range through a scope.

You would most likely destroy or at least damage it to a state where it needs quite some repair if it's not already damaged beyond that. How would you shoot a backpack clean off? This is not a western where you can just shoot someone belt buckel and his pants go down...

I'm pretty sure Rocket said something along the lines of it. It was if someone has night vision and you shoot said person in dah face. Well the night vision will be damaged/destroyed.

lol. I guess maybe I went too benny hill on that one. Maybe if backpacks were damaged they could leak items periodically until repaired. Then perhaps if you tag a guys backpack you could track him down by following the trail of beans and ammo he leaves behind. Yeah just having a gradual stages of disrepair would be cool. Nothing too intense or over the top though. Weapon damage would segway nicely with the whole crafting and durability thing too. Specific parts could fall into disrepair so youll need to find replacements to keep your gun in top condition. Having random parts for guns lying about would also open up the end game side of things too. So instead of finding a whole 50. cal you'd find a barrel here and a stock there and slowly assemble one over time. It would give guns more meaning to their owners and might make people more careful when engaging others.

I think I may have seen this interview actually. It's probably where I got the idea. :lol: It'll be interesting to see where they go with this side of things in the end. If they got stuff like this balaced right so that it's not too intrusive i think it'll give the game a lot more density

Rocket is already considering litter, as for when you eat a can of beans and leave the empty can on the floor, and that could be a nice way to track people down. Also, that about the backpack leaking items would be kinda cool, but REALLY annoying... so if some bambi with a bad aim hits your backpack, you're screwed :/

So say your bluejeans have 100/100 durability to start. You wear them down, they are at 50/100, you repair.

New durability is 99/99, or based on a factor of how much you let it deteriorate. So if you repaired at say 90/100 you'd get 99/99. If you repaired at 50/100 you might get 90/90, etc...

So you could do the majority of repairs with basic kit such as the toolbox or the sewing kit the OP mentioned, but over time the incentives for trading stuff in increase.

Pretty sure the SA is going to have some sort of system where items can be damaged and possibly repaired.

Though how you would repair NVG's is beyond me.
