sanity meter

Recommended Posts

I think it would be really cool to have a sanity meter of some sort similar to dont starve. if you havent played it, basically as you do certain things in the game, like spend time away from a light source at night, eat uncooked food, your sanity meter starts to drop. when it gets below a certain point your character starts sees andbhearing visual and audio hallucinations.Nosises and things like eyes staring at you in the darkness. eventually if it gets too low your hallucinations attack. I dont think that part is a good idea but could definitely do some cool post process effects for visual hallucinations and audio stuff is easy. the most important thing is to make it a gradual change and make losing sanity happen from things that make sense for the game. maybe eating human meat would jow be an option at the cost of sanity?

I see what your getting at

It could be like a sanity meter that starts at 100

If you are a bandit and kill people it will start to go down or if you just stay in the dark with Z's to long

As its gets lower and lower you will start to see things

Ex. Another player running, Hear shots, see vechicles going by etc.

But after arround 10secs they will disapear

Also no canibal pls

Somewhere I like the general idea but the implementation would have to be different in my opinion: never ever indicate to the player that your character is going insane - just let them see and hear things, that way you won't know what's real anymore.

The only problem I see is that not everybody goes insane from the same things. You can lock one person in a room with Mariah Carey-music playing non-stop for 24 hours and they might come out fine, put me in there and I'll come out like Norman Bates.

Personally I don't like things like this in a game. I could compare this idea to getting surpressed in BF3 (in which the idea is that you get scared and are not able to aim straight). Many people forget that these things are already being done by your brain itself. In dayz when I get ambushed my heart is racing and I start getting shaking hands because of the adrenaline, that is the surpression effect right there. But BF3 is not able to get you scared so the game has to get scared for you which in my opinion is just bad.

on the other hand..a tiny burnt down village with shadow ppl, only to be seen in a blink of an eye...maybe with a proper backstory to be found on newspapers, diaries, notes in mayor'S office, notebooks, mobiles..that would be something...and this would be creepy

Well yea, that sounds epic.

I agree about the implementation, I think that all the hallucinations should be character models that are already in the game, starting solid and then slowly fadin to transparency with time based on your sanity level.

think about the effect of being in your camp at the fire with a bunch of mates and one guy swears he saw a zombie that nobody else saw, or if youve really lost it you actually do see it long enough to think it was real and start firing it at. now add this effect to a horde of zombies at really insane level of the meter, the player is literally goung to jus start firing off rounds if he sees a horde of zombies roaming through their camp, even if others are dont react to the zombies, thry will react to the afflicted firing off rounds.

I'm not sure about sanity meters. On one hand, there's no doubt that seeing things like the things you see in DayZ would change most people mentally, but on the other hand, sanity is kind of a hard thing to represent. We don't really know what would happen to an average person in these situations, so maybe some sort of subtle middle ground is the way to go.

Dont try to tell me how i feel. Ive met tons of phychos in dayz because that how they were, they were psychos. and ive met some really nice people. thats the beauty its people. not characters on the screen. id say some post processes screen effect would be cool for if you are hungry or too hot and everything blurs and flashes but a sanity meter is just absurd to me. i dont want to be forced into a playstyle based on some arbitrary meter. i wanna do me in a zombie apocalypse.

I like this idea,I think it'd make sense and give a bit more depth to the game.

Sanity is subjective to how well the person accepts the new way of things, I for one would be having a blast because I'm already insane >=)

I don't know, I think forcing your character to behave a certain way should be limited, insanity kind of crosses the line. When you give a character traits, it creates a specific person that everyone follows, when the idea of DayZ is that it's close to being yourself in the situation. If you're a person who spends a lot of time in the dark in real life, you're not going to have as much of a hard time doing that anywhere else, of course there are people who literally would go insane for being in the dark, it's unnecessary forcing everyone to have a quality of one person. Eating uncooked food, well, I don't know if it would drive someone insane, I think it's just more likely to kill you with all of the bacteria it's been exposed to, which would be an interesting quality, considering you can't eat uncooked food (That requires cooking) at the moment.

WOW I'm surprised there is no hatred slamming the original poster with " SEARCH BAR NOOB " ... cause this idea is the one I would have seen the most !

Anyway, the idea is ok at best.. but would have to be very subtle

I already get paranoid and think I hear footsteps and cars and gunshots after I've been playing a while at night. I don't need the game to also tell me I'm insane.

The day a mechanic like this works on a game is the day we have to take personality tests when making an account for a game not everybody gets happy about these things because they wouldn't react like that irl so they bash the game and say it's crap
