Backpack solution for big items?

Recommended Posts

So the question of realism rears its head with just about any suggestion/idea thread. One thing that's not often talked about it possible solutions to the big-item (car parts) problem.

Allow me to illustrate:

W218z9M.jpg

Anyone have any good ideas?

Some off the top of my head:

1 - only one large item can be carried at a time

2 - you need to have a dolly (cart...not a girl's toy) in your tool set to carry multiple large items (max 3)?

3 - The engine block model and item icon needs to be replaced with a smaller engine part (distributor cap?) No survivor would lug around, hoist and install a full engine block. Maybe add 2 smaller parts to replace the one big engine block. So a car battery plus a distributor cap and spark plugs?

4 - Add your own suggestion here!

PS. If you have a hilarious caption for this photo, feel free to add one.

TBH I think they should just take up even more space in the backpack than they currently do. If you want to fix up a vehicle you should have to dump all your stuff in a tent so that you can carry the parts, and then a wheel or engine parts or whatever should take up more than half of a large backpack.

In my opinion, we should only be able to carry these items in our hands, so obviously one at the time. You still carry everything you had before grabing that fuel tank for example, but now, you can't loot anything, you can't use your primary/secondary weapon, you can't open/close doors, etc.

Keep in mind that DayZ is yet a game. I always pick up car tires for my bag so if i find a car with a broken tire i can fix it. Carrying them with hands even would be a pain it you find a car with one broken part 1000 km from anywhere. Just an oppinion

EDIT:

What i mean is that we cant make fixing vehicles very hard with a million different items to do it.

Vehicle Parts don't need to be nerfed in any way because finding the parts is the real problem

You could tie a car-tire to your backpack, it would mess with your mobility alot though.

As far as the whole engine block goes - I wouldn't be surprised if you can actually fix the broken engine in a car instead of swapping it for a new one. You might still need to find the smaller parts you mentioned but you won't have to lug around an entire engine block anymore.

Exactly. Unless the engine has thrown a rod, you don't need to change the block to get it running.

I noticed a little while ago that the in game description for the engine is actually Engine parts , its not meant to represent a whole engine block at all, seems they just used an image of a full engine because it would be more easily recognisable, same with the main rotor assembly and fuel tank parts, its just the parts needed to repair, not completely replace.

A wheel and tyre is going to be large heavy and cumbersome no matter what, unless you assume all thats needed is a puncture repair, but then a punture repair kit would only take up a very small amount of space so you go in the opposite direction and it becomes too easy. plus the vehicle models are clearly missing wheels when fully damaged.

Windscreen glass is a bit of a problem as you cant really repair glass, well not without it losing it see through qualities, so it would have to be replaced but in the mod windscreen only takes up 2 slots which makes no sense it seems to me it should be the largest and most cumbersome vehicle part to carry.

Also, hopefully in the standalone no vehicle should be reliant on glass in order for it to move so you should be able to take the vehicle to the glass.

Scrap metal, now thats a vague one, there could be numerous uses for scrap so its hard to define how big and heavy 'scrap' is.

I think adding a weight system really adds to the game in terms of making people make decisions on how much they carry, its far from perfect as it doesnt address the size of items but it does add consequences to stuffing engine parts and 4 wheels into your pockets.

I just saw a bright light and heard angels singing: 'why don't we ROLL the wheel' but otherwise I'm alright.

We're onto something here with the wheel rolling.

Will the new city sniper be a bambi bowler?

Just the engine blocks weight in tools. :)

Do what i have seen professional sportsmen do in their pre season training. Tie a rope around the waist (or backpack) and drag 1-2 tyres behind them.

This was always my thought as well, I presumed that the engine block just represented several smaller parts needed to get an engine going. A broken down car very rarely needs it's engine block replacing.

It the wheels and glass that don't really make sense. As people have said though, it;s a game we don't want to make fixing vehicles too difficult as it takes the fun out of it. Some sort of wheelbarrow/sledge system with slower movement would be good I reckon. Also glass needs to have less importance and hopefully you will be able to fashion/customise vehicles a bit more.

It is kind of silly that currently a rifle that could easily be slung over your shoulder takes up 12 spaces but a wheel takes up like 3.

I vote to get rid of glass. It's simply not a DIY job.

Whether a car has one really won't change things too much. Bullets will still penetrate.

Instead, add car batteries (2 spaces should still be fine). A bit more realistic anyway, and a top reason that cars left sitting would not start

Then, simply swap out the engine block model with a set of small car parts,

And while we're at it, change out the fuel tank to a fuel pump.

Ta-da!, some small cosmetic icon/model changes and the system can stay as is.
