JeffDetroit 717 Posted May 14, 2013 (edited) When playing DayZ, I find that using the hatchet is really one of the few ways that I really enjoy experiencing the game from the standpoint of a zombie apocalypse. All of this bang! bang! kapow! explosion stuff just isn't for me. I'm not saying guns, motorized machine guns, and satchel charges should be eliminated, on the contrary, it is fun dodging and avoiding KOS PvP while looking for supplies. It just seems more threatening to me (and thus more scary and fun) when you have to be up close and personal with a crowbar or hatchet to defend yourself, than being 15-500 yards away and taking down zeds and people "remotely" with a gun. Yeah, yeah, guns and rifles and frag grenades exist in the game (and they still should!) but I think there are players who make a definite choice of weapon to accent their gaming experience. Close quarters combat is mine. The hatchet is for me.Anyone else adhere to this philosophy? Edited May 14, 2013 by JeffDetroit
taco241 393 Posted May 14, 2013 You're in luck.Standalone will bring more melee weapons, and fewer high-end military. You'll soon get to see the life slip away from your fellow survivors as you dip your knife into their back while gently laying them down, whispering "Shhhh, shhhh...it'll be over soon"

So the axe is the perfect weapon it wont bring unwanted attention,Speaking of silent and deadly...No but really, that is good news about there being more melee weapons in the stand-alone. On that subject, I'd like there to be a whole assortment of farm tools, baseball bats, samurai swords, rolling pins, shovels, tire irons, folding chairs (yes, I typed folding chairs), and even prosthetic legs! The reason hatchets are so common is because there would be more readily available melee weapons than guns laying around, obviously.Maybe even a little melee weapon crafting too! You find nails and a baseball bat and with your toolbox you can make a "mace-ballbat"; some scrap metal and barbed wire can make a whip; a stone off the ground and some goat meat and you can make "kid rock"

pawlzz 18 Posted May 14, 2013 The hatchet is honlestly the best anti-zombie weapon, because it is silenced and has unlimited 'ammo'. Only reloading all the way aaaw yeah :DAnd is is just epic when you kill an armed player who is trying to shoot at you with a melee weapon. Man...
tajjuk 65 Posted May 14, 2013 Pretty much always run with a hatchet out, If I have a gun I make room for it in the backpack, can't be bothered to waste ammo on Zombies which most of the time just attracts more zombies.Plus I always kind of feel that if another player sees you with a hatchet you have a slightly better chance not to get KOS than you would with a gun, especially a good one. This method has also conned a few people before, I've been looting with a hatchet out and been spotted by another player who I've also seen but neither of us have decent LOS, a few times people have come charging at me thinking I'm only hatchet armed but instead I've backed away and got my gun out. OrLoK 16187 Posted May 14, 2013 Hello thereI rarely use any main weapon other than the hatchet. Unlimited ammo, silent, decent range what more do you need? Rifles are for amateurs.RgdsLoK
JeffDetroit 717 Posted May 14, 2013 I guess, in a looting situation, you can keep the hatchet out for quietly dispatching any zombies wandering into your building without alerting any players nearby by gunshots, and have a main gun in your pack for sticky situations. If one were good enough with the crossbow it'd serve dual purposes. Is the crossbow even available in the Arma2 editor for practicing?

Saethkept 134 Posted May 14, 2013 I sincerely hope that oriental themed edged weapons never make an appearance in any official DayZ mod. They just do not fit. A bayonet, a combat knife or even an antique saber would fit the bill much more realistically.
JeffDetroit 717 Posted May 14, 2013 Some kind of an antique sword should "make the cut" - I mean, if we are talking about the zombie apocalypse, there would be all sorts of useable antique swords hanging on people's walls ready to be sharpened. I wouldn't go as far as Bruce Lee nunchucks, however, that is just plain silly.

diddums 3760 Posted May 15, 2013 I love my hatchet. 99% of the time I'm playing, I've got my trusty hatchet equipped, and it's also the first thing I look for when I spawn. I just wish it was a bit more consistent, and that adding it to / removing it from my tool belt was a one-key action.
