American Items, Props, Vehicles and Weapons -> out the window

Recommended Posts

This is a suggestion to the Standalone Developers. Everyone else can post their opinions but should not post off-topic or extremely short comments saying MY opinion is bad. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I respect yours, and I hope that you'll respect mine.

Make all the American things very rare. I know alot of people will hate me for this, but logically American items don't belong in a post-soviet country. From what i've played from the Arma 2 missions, Chernarus is a country where there's a rebel force fighting the government+Russian military, with the Americans and British just recently stepping in to help. In DayZ, I see very little evidence of the ArmAII storyline. There's wrecked humvees (which shouldn't be there) surrounded by Russian Military zombies, abondoned bases filled with Russian Military zombies, deer stands guarded by... who? Russian Military zombies.

Pepsi, Coke and Mountain Dew I can see somehow making it's way into a country like this, but there should be more Chernarussian/Russian drinks than there are American soft drinks.

DayZ is very immersive, and one of the many memes about it is the fact the road signs are in Russian or Czech. This is a great thing to keep, but everything else (Standalone Items) should be in Russian as well. Now you guys could be doing this already, but with the limited info we fanbase get, it's hard to tell.

American/British vehicles should be replaced with Russian/Chernarussian variants or go through Russification (yes, that's a word.)

This next point is a bit picky and unessecary, but the Green Mountain easter egg radio transmission is mostly in English.

Russian clothing! Instead of finding a ball cap or a bandanna in the Standalone, make Ushankas and other popular hats in Russia a common sight. The clothes in DayZ are 100% dependant on the time period it's set in. Since nobody knows but you guys, it's all up to you, but I hope that it's not American clothing.

Everyone loves a good M4 variant, I know I do - and it would suck to see them go, so maybe somewhere in the story of DayZ, there could be a part where Americans/British come in to help. Maybe a part of the map is a UN military base, who knows.

M4 vs AK - I'm not going to say any one of these is bad, but the M4 is less reliable (especially in a zombie apocalypse) than an AK. Likewise, the accuracy of an M4 passes the AK by a bit. So I hope you take that into consideration as well.

These have been my suggestions, I hope you take some into consideration. If anyone wants to try "Mullraugh's Super Realistic" style of DayZ, join a Russian server and try to communicate with a Russian in direct chat, try very hard not to kill people, and pretend it's real life where you can't just respawn because you woke up in a crappy town. Thank you for your time and your amazing mod.

I agree, but some specific portions of the United States/Western equipment should appear to some degree, canonically. The most basic US Infantry weapons should probably stay (M4 variants, M16 variants and m249s). M240s, M107s, Mk.48s and other 'substandard' (Not meaning we don't extensively use them, they just aren't usually a part of regular infantry) should probably go, and be replaced with more Russian esque weapons (Like the PKM, RPK and RPD). In hindsight, I think they should add the RPG-7 simply because it's such a common worldwide launcher.

Though honestly, this thread has been made plenty of times.

It also helps that the Green Mountain Radio Transmission was a hoax, not that that makes it any less eerie, or plausible.

While I can't think of a reason why they didn't just add in stuff from say AOC instead of a mix of US and BAF stuff. Id say mostly why theres destroyed humvees and such is becuase they probably didn't have models for vodniks or UAZs put in. Right now the only 'american' vehicles are the little bird, huey, and Humvee, and the only British (that i know of) is the offroad (which the civi version COULD theoretically be in some rich Chenarusian's garage) But then again its all about choices. BB has custom patches for their servers, where the UK server has more BAF vehicles added as opposed to the US server (just an example)

Recently stepped in? Just off the coast of Utes (which is right near Chernarus), there's an aircraft carrier. The campaign and missions also show that the US has a decent-sized force in Chernarus. I don't think it's so bad to have all this Western tech in there.

And if we're getting down to the basics; lore doesn't matter in this game. It should be hard enough where we don't give a damn about what country's gun we're using.

Thematically this makes perfect sense. For gameplay purposes however, it makes little to no difference. Six of one, half a dozen of the the other, really.

Aircraft carriers aren't static, I'm pretty sure it wouldn't still be hanging around some backwater former Soviet Republic after the conclusion of Operation Red Harvest in 2009...

Anyways, yes, American items should be rare. The American items we see should MAKE SENSE (no .50 cal rifles, no AA-12s, etc). However there could still be some American items, they'd just be rarer.

Other countries than the US use AR-15 based rifles, this stuff needn't even be American.

Wikipedia will tell you that Croatia, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Greece, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Kosovo, Lithuania, Macedonia, Poland, Serbia, and Turkey all have military units which use variants of the AR-15.

A lot of other American weapons in-game such as the M249 or M240 are Belgian-designed. Why have an M249 or M240 in the game when you could have a Minimi or an FN MAG?

Like I've said many times, the current weapons selection is not ideal, that should be obvious to anyone. This is a mod, apart from a couple exceptions it uses ArmA weapons. The final decisions will be up to the community dev team..

However I'm still gonna spam my request to see a PKM in the game, that shit needs to be in right now!

Ehh there are ways to get weapons like that though...in other countries illegally of coarse but oh well you could argue all day about this kind of thing.

They will most likely take an AK or a "native gun" over an Armalite or "foreign gun" every time because first it's a native gun, second the probability of them having used it during their service is quite high and last but not least the price... You get 10 AKs for an M16, ok i might be exaggerating...

Not that there wouldn't be any foreign weapons if there is no alternative but in this case we have affordable and common alternatives all over the place.

On one Pakistani forum I'm a member of () they say you can get an AK-74 assembled in Darra for the equivalent of $150 (imported foreign will cost quite a bit more)... but an AR-15 can cost you anywhere from $3500 to $7000!
