Deviant (DayZ) 43 Posted April 25, 2012 I've noticed the amount of people disliking PvP, and the general attitude towards it.As a Survival mod, I'm shocked that people are complaining about how it's unfair/lame/terrible for other players to kill other players. If you trust everyone you meet in your life, you may gain everyone's trust. If you stay on your own, avoiding everyone you see, nobody knows you are there. If you kill everyone you see to get their things, you may find many valuable things. But if you trust everyone you meet, you will be backstabbed. But if you keep to yourself, you will only have yourself to watch your back. But if you hunt others, you may find yourself become hunted. The choices you make have consequences. For better or for worse. You may not enjoy the choices you make. But please don't come on the forums complaining about how you misplaced your trust and got yourself killed. It's a dangerous place out there. Trust is to be earned, or else you will find yourself dead.Keep that in mind before rant. Thank you, and happy hunting.

Evilbread 6 Posted April 25, 2012 I agree completely, but that said, the whole thing about people just disconnecting when you shoot them, then coming back and getting you in return was quite unsettling in 1.3.3.But now that it is fixed (haven't seen it happen as of yet since patching) it shouldn't be a problem anymore, and anyone complaining is just looking for something to nitpick, or they don't feel the true spirit of the mod. Possibly thinking of it as more of a bigger co-op game like Left 4 Dead and such.

bodycount 83 Posted April 25, 2012 I think you are misconstruing the term "PvP". The proper word you are probably looking for is "Ganking".
Evilbread 6 Posted April 25, 2012 Ganking, still being associated with PvP, however. The AI isn't surrounding you and out maneuvering you, is it?
Deviant (DayZ) 43 Posted April 25, 2012 Quote I think you are misconstruing the term "PvP". The proper word you are probably looking for is "Ganking".Player Versus Player. One person killing another, for whatever purpose.Ganking is the process in which a group of characters gang up on one or more players that do not have a chance to defend themselves. If you decide to kill someone, the weight of your actions are immense. If you don't realize it, it will bite you in the ass.
bodycount 83 Posted April 25, 2012 I would argue it takes no more than one individual to gank an entire group full of trusting individuals. Shoot them all in the back and loot away. That would be ganking. PvP would be two people fighting against each other somewhat equally matched/geared/prepared attempting to defeat each other in proper combat. Irregardless the new bandit system will ensure that gankers/pvpers will stick out like a sore thumb...at least during the day. Until the night comes and they are blasting away with Thermal Scoped .50 cal sniper rifles and NVG's with silenced weapons garnered from camping airfield respawns for endless hour upon endless hour. Even with equal weapons one guy is rarely going to stand a chance against two or three or more. He might get one and then the others shoot him in turn. Then supply medical aid to the first one to hit the ground.I do like the sarcasm in your last paragraph though ;)[hr'] 'Deviant said: I've noticed the amount of people disliking PvP' date=' and the general attitude towards it.As a [i']Survival mod, I'm shocked that people are complaining about how it's unfair/lame/terrible for other players to kill other players. If you trust everyone you meet in your life, you may gain everyone's trust. No one plays this mod by accident and that means that probably everyone realizes that there is a PVP component involved even before they install it. In fact that is what probably attracts most of the DayZ players... not turning the game into some sort of group based death match, or "ganking" the lone guy that just spawned... but the realistic uncertainty that should accompany an encounter in such a scenario.Hopefully the mod will continue to improve and balance itself out so the primary focus is once again on.... what was that again? Oh right, surviving zombies. To those who think the only true enjoyment in this mod is team death match, even when the other "team" might only be one person, with lesser gear and weapons, perhaps you should try a real death match mod instead? There IS a fairly strong PVP community for ARMA... or maybe that would be too fair if the teams were the same size and everyone had the same sort of firepower? jordnz 102 Posted April 25, 2012 I admit that I'm guilty for whinging about PvP when I get shot from somewhere I couldn't even see and lose all my awesome gear. Though I think like most people, it's just a vocal response in frustration for what just took place. The idea behind survival of the fittest and survival in general that the mod portrays is actually amazing and I really wouldn't change I thing - thus meaning that PvP should definitely stay.I do disagree with the pointless murdering of newcomers at the coast who have nothing but starter gear though. It just seems like a pointless endeavour. However, the airfield where a lot of PvP'ing occurs is otherwise understandable as the place is loaded with great gear (in fact, the airfield is the only place I have ever been killed by another player - three times now... I have to stop going there at night... Haha).
Deviant (DayZ) 43 Posted April 25, 2012 Killing noobs on the coast will only get you killed. It is pointless and because of the latest patches you won't see that any more. You will always see the weak pick on the weakest.
blackbeard06 16 Posted April 25, 2012 Nicely said Deviant (referring to main topic) Not only is it realistic it provides the most RP out of a zombie mod. I agree to those that say if you don't like it hten play Left 4 Dead or any other unrealistic game. Arma 2 is based on Realism as it's a military simulator. Not an run n gun deathmathing game! tpenn 9 Posted April 25, 2012 The problem with PVP in this SURVIVAL mod is the bulk of it isn't for survival at all, it's pure asshattery. Such PVP is non-sensical and realistically would only occur in the most socio-pathic 1 or 2 oddball delinquent survivors, so why it seems rampant on many servers is a testament to the current problem.Types of PVP that actually make sense for this mod would be vying over a camp site or rare items however currently resources aren't limited or unique enough to justify killing over. Types of PVP that people complain about: the sniper sitting on a roof with NVG goggles pew-pewing for the sake of pew pew. That just ruins the game, those people need to just go play counterstrike if that's all they're after.
oktyabr 53 Posted April 25, 2012 +1What T. Penn said.
ghost_kage 5 Posted April 25, 2012 I also agree with what T. Penn said . I just wish there was a way to fix it. However, I believe the devs are heading in the right direction to balance the game out with the recent bandit update. Seeing how brilliant the game has been so far, I'm sure it will only get better and more balanced as more features are added. It would be cool if there was a system implemented where you could group up with someone, and then it wasn't possible for them to shoot you in the back when your walking into a building or something like that. I suppose turning friendly fire off? But then again this pushes us in the direction of unrealism. =/
Deviant (DayZ) 43 Posted April 25, 2012 People can no longer disco to avoid death. This will stop people from carelessly killing, and filter out the people who don't bother with patience.
Drake Sigar 9 Posted April 25, 2012 Thus far I have never complained when I was shot for my gear. I simply don't have any tolerance for costal town snipers picking off respawned characters for giggles.
pulse89 0 Posted April 26, 2012 Maybe a naming system could be implemented where people who are deemed to be killing for the reason of, in the wise words of T. Penn, "pure asshattery"? Could be controlled by server admins or by popular vote...
maximillian007 12 Posted April 26, 2012 meh, in a world where there is no consequences for actions: mentally or by authority people will do what people do and that is kill for the LOLz so instead of all this talk about HUD and morality shit and player models why not add in the effect of mental issues like PTSD sort of thing where your guy gets his screen shaking like the pain and he gets deppressed and can't run as far or just doesn't want to run and this can be cured by helping out people where as killing them or seeing your buddies dies messes with your head, shoot more than two people within 1 minute you get black out rage your screen tunnels so you have to concentrate on what you are doing but you are able to sustain more hits for a duration of time idkjust some ideas on the PvP and people dieing around you since both can harm your mind
goatsenator 11 Posted April 26, 2012 I honestly hated it at first and was getting pretty frustrated, especially when Poopypants shot me in the face with buckshot by accident. However, it's that survival aspect and knowing you can't trust anyone but your close friends (apparently not lol) that really makes this stand out from other games/mods. I spend little time actually trying to cause confrontations, and while that may not sound fun to many, it's the best part of the game for me. It's like I can feel the tension building up for the next encounter, and I hope I'll be lucky enough to get out of the impending shit storm. That tension combined with the desire to explore the world and find better gear makes for a pretty addicting combination. Without PVP it just wouldn't be the same. As I've mentioned before, I think there should be at least one server that tries no PVP for people who don't want it. If it's as full as the other servers at all times there would be no reason not to do so.Max, I don't think adding in PTSD would be a good idea. If I can mentally handle the stress of clicking a mouse button and 'killing' a player, my guy should be able to as well. I shouldn't have to deal with that annoying shaky screen after I shoot a guy trying to kill me because my guy can't handle it. Why not just off myself in game if my guy is going to be such a pansy? I defended myself successfully, so my reward is a shaky screen that will likely prevent me from defending myself in the next hostile encounter unless I subject myself to a possibly life threatening situation? I just think it's a bad idea that would cause annoyance more than anything and lead to less freedom in the world which is the main draw for me right now. Midaychi 9 Posted April 26, 2012 I spend time sneaking around and looking around every so often, and treat each player I don't know as if they're gonna shoot me if I come close. So I keep my distance and study them if they don't see me first, otherwise I take cover and/or gtfo. I once nearly ran into a group of three survivors this way; they were a little north of Nadezhdino, near that pond and standing on the road. They were standing in place there with their revolvers out, in a near perfect equilateral triangle, and occasionally looking around. Never got to meet them, but never got shot by them either. They eventually wandered off east and I got to visit that pond there north of Nadezhdino to try to fill a water bottle.Unfortunately the water there doesn't work for filling, for some reason. At least it didn't for me.This way, though, I only die from two things: #1: Zombie one hit killing me from 9000+ blood by knocking me out or snapping my leg or typically both in their first swing. Or #2: exploring near the southern coast and taking a revolver bullet to the knee from survivors that spawn behind me in the water as I'm walking by.I also like the idea of glowsticks but find more often then not that using one simply gives a bright stick-like glowing object for other players to shoot at. atc86 46 Posted April 26, 2012 I love the PVP aspect to this mod, I dislike the fact that new players are shot at almost immediately. It would be cool if some spawn areas were safe zones from pvp, that way you can at least plan an escape from the small village. So last night I was traveling to Green Mountain with 3 friends to meet a few more, just south of the mountain we started taking sniper fire while looting a barn. I got shot but we managed to take cover and get bandaged up then make a run for it.As we traveled to Green Mountain a couple of guys were talking in chat about how they shot at us because 2 of our group were bandits. We explained that we were friendly and only had the bandit skins due to having to defend ourselves so much. The chat continued on public for 20 or so minutes..... They decided they were also going to take a look at the tower at Green Mountain, so seeing as we were there we set up an ambush, waited for them, then killed them lolI don't normally like having to kill people but this just felt good since they shot at us.That's why I love the pvp aspect so much. Stay in large groups and stay as silent as possible.... best 2 tips for this mod.
-A2L-Jono 1 Posted April 26, 2012 Imo, bring friends on the server from outside the mod. No backstabbing and you will have someone to watch your back.
