Maloney (DayZ) 26 Posted March 31, 2013 Applejaxc and I were debating whether it is cheating to use programs such as teamspeak or skype to communicate in game. He said yes because he considers it an unfair advantage and "everyone who uses a 3rd party, non-DayZ supported program for an unfair advantage is a cheater", I on the other hand do not believe that it is an unfair advantage as all players have access to the program and it is an accepted standard to use these methods of communication.
Rage VG 4033 Posted March 31, 2013 No.A cheat would be an unfair advantage.Everyone has the ability to get on a Skype Call with their buddies, therefore it is not unfair. It's a fair advantage, that players have every right to make use of.
PK Richie 507 Posted March 31, 2013 Exactly what Rage said :)It's only cheating when you do something that others can't, Dayz is better when played with others so it's not your fault the others have no mates
Blondedash 403 Posted March 31, 2013 everyone can do it free of charge so not cheating.
TheBaby 61 Posted March 31, 2013 No. Your friend is severely retarded. It must be fun playing with him.
SmashT 10907 Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) I see it as an irrelevant argument, people will always find ways to use external voip. Call it whatever you like, it's the norm in online gaming and removing it is technically unenforceable. The only thing developers can do is build a decent in-game voip system to help encourage it's use instead. Edited March 31, 2013 by smasht_AU
Death_Dealer 3155 Posted March 31, 2013 There's already global chat, so no, not really.
TheDesigner 1197 Posted March 31, 2013 Without an ingame radio, using a third party to make up for it isn't cheating at all. You're just using another program to replace a missing mechanic. Plus, being able to talk to friends while playing a game is hardly cheating. That means I couldn't talk to someone sitting next to me, because that's an "unfair advantage". OrLoK 16186 Posted March 31, 2013 Hello thereIt's not cheating per se, but it would be nice/realistic if everyone used the built in VOIP.RgdsLoK
TheDesigner 1197 Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) Hello thereIt's not cheating per se, but it would be nice/realistic if everyone used the built in VOIP.RgdsLoKIt would, but it's just not realistic, in a sense of playing the game and still having fun. Plus, I like to talk to people while playing DayZ who aren't even on my server/not playing the game. Saying I can't talk to anyone who isn't in my server because its "cheating" is ridiculous.(I know you're not saying its cheating) Edited March 31, 2013 by TheDesigner
Maloney (DayZ) 26 Posted March 31, 2013 No. Your friend is severely retarded. It must be fun playing with him.Lol, hes not my friend. We were arguing about this in another thread and I decided to make a poll instead of spamming irrelevant posts on that thread.Glad you all agree with me. Although in standalone when radios are properly implemented I suppose things may seem different.
Steak and Potatoes 13480 Posted March 31, 2013 I havent see any global bans come from using teamspeak so no not cheating
rossums 2190 Posted March 31, 2013 I don't consider it a cheat, anyone can do it.I think it's a bit against the 'spirit' of the game but if you are playing against other teams using TS/Skype it's more of a necessity since you can't effectively ban third-party VOIP.
tsandrey 379 Posted March 31, 2013 Then I am a cheater
Pandema 352 Posted March 31, 2013 Unless we start getting DayZ servers with ACRE and radio drops we're gonna see people using 3rd party VOIP because the ArmA2 system leaves alot to be desired.
MOS182 63 Posted March 31, 2013 It's basically like using a headset in real life so I don't see what's wrong with it

gamerman001 182 Posted March 31, 2013 My room mate is also my team mate.... We dont talk to eachother in game either.... Are WE cheating?
Dreams_Of_Cheese (DayZ) 71 Posted March 31, 2013 Not cheating no, but there is a pretty good reason why people can't speak when they've been knocked out.
Maloney (DayZ) 26 Posted March 31, 2013 Thanks for the responses guys. I wanted to see the community's opinion on the matter. I'm happy with the feedback you've all provided :)
mitor 176 Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) I had to vote yes, because the poll lacks more interesting options. You should be forced to use direct chat to talk with your mates. That would add realism and immersion to the game, because you could be heard by enemy players and they could overhear your conversations. On the other hand your friend's argument is indeed irrelevant. Everything you can use to play games should not be considered cheating or unfair.-Because using multiscreen configs provides you with a much larger field of view...-Because using Track IR allows you to quickly oversee your surroundings...-Because playing in a good computer makes the difference...-Because living in a country that provides you good networking system and close to the server also can make the difference...This is how I would make the game if I could:-I would enable direct chat always and forever. No key pressing to talk. This way, whatever you would say to your friends would be said ingame through the direct chat. You don't want to be heard, you simply shut up or mute your mic, so you can't talk to your friends. Edited March 31, 2013 by Mitor
TheDesigner 1197 Posted March 31, 2013 Not cheating no, but there is a pretty good reason why people can't speak when they've been knocked out.So when I'm knocked out in game, I'm not allowed to talk in real life? That's taking it a bit far. DayZ isn't the only game where people use 3rd party programs to talk to friends, DayZ is also not the most realistic game, everyone needs to stop treating it like its life. Mos1ey 6301 Posted March 31, 2013 (edited) It's meta-gaming, not cheating. This is how I would make the game if I could:-I would enable direct chat always and forever. No key pressing to talk. This way, whatever you would say to your friends would be said ingame through the direct chat. You don't want to be heard, you simply shut up or mute your mic, so you can't talk to your friends. This is a nice idea but I think it would be possible to only allow your VOIP software access to your mic, which would just give an even bigger advantage to the people that knew how to do this as opposed to everyone using VOIP software and being on an even playing field.
