RooBurger 285 Posted March 30, 2013 Rocket's original idea was a survival simulator from what I understand. So why not give it a try? A pure, post-apocalyptic survival simulator, an optional mode where server admin can switch off zombies. Perhaps it might automatically make other survival aspects more difficult, such as hunting and scavenging.Opinions?
Xucphra 453 Posted March 30, 2013 There's a very popular mission for Arma 2 called "Wasteland". Vehicles, guns, the need to eat/drink. No zombies.Check it out.
BwobBwub 660 Posted March 30, 2013 Wasteland is pretty much that. Although it doesn't have a loot system like DayZ and I think it would make wasteland have more of a post-apocalyptic feel.
liquidcactus 719 Posted March 30, 2013 Indeed check out wasteland.. even dayz 2017 is alot harder.. it feels so lonely in that game.. but there is still infected of course

RooBurger 285 Posted March 30, 2013 I've played wasteland, and I think it's pretty insufficient for experience I'd like to see. It's not really a survival simulation.
Xucphra 453 Posted March 30, 2013 I've played wasteland, and I think it's pretty insufficient for experience I'd like to see. It's not really a survival simulation. If that's the case, I'm sure there's a way to host a DayZ server without the zombies. I can't imagine taking part in it, but if that's your thing it can be done.Just seek out someone with some technical know-how and find out what you can do. RooBurger 285 Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) The standalone will have a deeper survival aspect. Removing zombies from the mod might not be as entertaining. Edited March 30, 2013 by RooBurger
mr_chabowski@live.co.uk 2416 Posted March 30, 2013 In SA I hope the brutal survival is enough of a challenge that it could distract you from the Zed-threat. Maybe with lulls in zombie-population in random areas, or at random times. When you're desperate and half-dead, zombies out of nowhere would be a shit-your-pants moment. Especially when you'd almost forgotten about them.I'm not keen on the idea of removing them altogether. The recipe for DayZ is nature + zombies kicking your ass. It'd still be cool without Zeds, if it can be made challenging enough, but it just wouldn't be the same.
NonovUrbizniz (DayZ) 137 Posted March 30, 2013 Standalone and other mods will have a LOT more survival mechanics...I do agree though... wasteland isn't even persistent so there is NO emotional investment or real need to survive... Gear is everywhere and you kit out VERY fast... it's more about PVP and teams as well...I agree a PURE survivor mod would be great... On our mod we intend on offering as much choice for server owners as possible... maybe one might be "no zombies"... hmmmm...IMO you'd need to have VERY few servers running though to ensure there is always high population numbers o/wise it's just a camping simulator...
-Gews- 7443 Posted April 1, 2013 Wasteland definitely isn't survival, Wasteland is a PvP grinder... fun, but different.I see the OP's point. At least for me, the zombies may as well be taken out right now since they pose no threat unless I'm being shot at, and being shot at is already a big enough threat. They're honestly just a distraction at the moment.
RooBurger 285 Posted April 1, 2013 It'd make a big FPS difference too.Last night I was fighting a bandit in Elektro who got very lucky because a zombie knocked me out, allowing him to finish me off with a Makarov while I was unconscious. They hit me from behind as I was so focused on the enemy. That was the most interesting interaction I've had with the zombie dynamic in a while, it changed the outcome of that fight in a non-broken way.
-Gews- 7443 Posted April 1, 2013 It'd make a big FPS difference too.Yup, although I usually get much better FPS in DayZ than in Wasteland. Must be all those cars and base parts...DayZ needs zombies to be DayZ, but right now they could replace zeds with Teletubbies and it wouldn't make a difference. One time I decided to destroy two cars with a crowbar in a town full of zeds, I killed tons and blew up both cars. Then I decided to commit suicide by zombie and got their attention, and then stood still and let them have at me. It took AGES for them to take my health down, and then they walked away and wouldn't attack me!I had to jump off a damn CLIFF to kill myself! That is not what I want to see. When I go into a town, I want to have a large chance of being ripped apart very quickly. Zombies should be dangerous. Really dangerous.
