Start DayZ or Arma2?

Recommended Posts

Hey, I'm gonna get ArmA 2 Combined Operations soon so I need to know if I should get straight on to DayZ or Practise on ArmA2. Of course, I am gonna play ArmA and DayZ. By the way, can anyone tell me HOW to be able to practise and spawn things like helicopters to train? If anyone can reply, I would be deeply appreciated. Thank You guys!

I just started straight onto DayZ, you get use to the controls quite fast. Hope I helped! :D

The best thing to do is just start up DayZ and screw around near the coast in the 2 big cities (Cherno and Elektro). The inventory screen is something that is going to take a LONG time to get used to. The only thing i would recommend learning from Arma 2 is flying a chopper. Choppers are going to be a complete mystery to you on how to fly them unless you learn it in the armory first.

I'd recommend you at least pull up the boot camp stuff in Arma 2 and OA before diving into DayZ.

Is it hard to get started into training or is it simple to get straight into it.

Just for driving practice and flying helis I'd recommend spending some time in the Arma tutorials. It'll save you a lot of frustration when you finally find (and crash) one.

Arma 2.

You'll get used to the controls, no matter what game you play (in general) so the controls and the feel of the game is not an issue.

What you need is player Vs player experience. Not the bad kind where you shoot on sight, but the common sense kind.

Identifying targets. Identifying weapons. Movement in combat. How to recognize if you've been spotted etc.

Without a grasp on all that + more.. You'll be a sitting duck or a headless chicken... and I'm talking about within the 1st few weeks, not days. Maybe months even..

In DayZ, these experiences [Edit: (Player encounter experiences) ] can be days between each other, maybe more. (depending the server). It could take you weeks to build up the experience that Arma 2 can teach you in a day.

You'll save yourself time and trust me, You'll learn a lot more along the way.

Play the campaign and single player missions. Arma 2 original missions can be quite an up hill struggle your 1st time around but still worth a try.

The PMC DLC has better missions for newbies and you'll get the HD clothing & weapons used in DayZ

You'll be wasting so much time if you jump into dayz 1st without getting the basic combat experience.

Like Dave_ says, start with Arma II.

Theres an exellent bootcamp with missions for each and every thing in Arma, so you can learn it all. Its really worth it tbh.

If you jump straight into DayZ, you will be lost and most likely have a hard time having fun, because theres nothing to help you :)

Arma is so complex you need to spend some time learning it, it can be tough hehe.

the 1st mission of training in arma2 ( the one with a firing range ) was all I did.

Later use the editor to learn chopper flight as it is not an easy thing to do (arma2 is a simulator after all ), it takes about 3 hours to get the hang of choppers and how to land quickly.

I load up the editor every few weeks to refresh my chopper skills as flying in a controlled environment and flying in DayZ are completely different.

That's a really good idea. You can go weeks or months without flying a chopper at times. And during all this time, you assume or convince yourself that you're a good pilot. BUT REALLY, it's all a matter of practice and you should keep up that practice.

You start flying a chopper after weeks of not flying and it can be like learning to walk all over again, even if it just takes less time.

It's still worth burning some spare time on the editor to make sure you don't get your fellow survivors/bandits killed.

Unless you're interested in what Arma 2 has to offer ( which i personally, am not) Then go straight to DayZ. You don't really have anything to lose by it, just to gain. Things will come to you, just give it a couple days or so.

The Editor is awesome, I have turned NW airfield into a massive training complex complete with all of the weapons I might find in chernarus, mockup towns and every vehicle in game.

Not to mention training targets for sniping practice.

its my training map for DayZ!

If you have a sniper rifle and a gillie suit, as soon as you spawn, this post makes perfect sense,

If you want to learn to fly the choppers the Boot Camp is the perfect place tbh.

You dont need to do anything other then starting it and you can choose to fly Transport or Attack chopper.

It really is great training :)

The editor is abit more complex, so if you are new to arma i would stay away from it in the beginning, it might confuse you more then you want heh.

Boot Camp ftw, thats what its there for anyway heh.

Is Bootcamp an add on or is it built in the game?

I'd say you can learn most functions through playing DayZ. But especially if you want to get to know the different types of Weapons, Ammo and Vehicles, Starting Arma 2 and going into a Showcase-Mission is highly recommended.

But if you don't want your friends to hate you, don't try to fly a heli in dayZ before you successfully started and landed one several times in the arma showcase or training mission. Reacquiring a new one there, is a lot easier than it is in dayZ. If your friends spent 3 hours fixing it up, you crashing it into a tree, wont be appreciated.
