Veteran or Normal, your marker should be on the map.

Recommended Posts

The game should remove any marker on the map I think. I actually want to see the map be a realistic map, one that doesn't scroll or anything, it at most puts the latitude and longitude markings and you can mostly just read names on towns, being able to visually zoom in abit to read a little closer. If you have a compass and a map, you should NEVER be lost in this game. Its not that hard.

Just to be an ultimate pedant (sorry!) the markings on the map aren't Latitude and Longitude - the map works on grid references, which have a few key differences to Lat/Long, the most significant of which is that Lat/Long is typically given as 'Northings' (ie the numbers going up the side) first, whereas grid references are typically given 'Eastings' (the numbers along the bottom) first.

Just realised, this game NEEDS grid magnetic angle and variation and all that jazz. Compass is no longer the same north as the map's north!

All the little flourishes help to round out the experience.

The more complex the better.

Frankly I couldn't care less if I'm facing "true" North when my "map" is just a Chernarus postcard. :D

Haha, oh man, that would be utterly evil. If you were a real bastard, you could even work in deviation for proximity to large metal structures such as in cities. I can only imagine the rage.

Of course it is technically possible that in whatever year this takes place that the GMA could just so happen to be zero, if the magnetic pole happened to be directly North of Chernarus that year. :P

True that, I still want to see the look on the noobs' faces as they run north following their compass but end up at Kabanino instead of Vybor or some such hilarity.

Green Mountain could be a huge compass fucker-upperer, pulling careless survivors towards its ominous heights...

In all honesty I would prefer no map at all and the DayZdb map did spoil a lot of the explorational experience a little bit, i didn't use one at all on Namalsk.

But maybe instead of a huge blue blip maybe just a pencil marking or perhaps there can be certain points in a town entrance you can use to orientate yourself.

I can only imagine the state of the 'report bugs' thread after that one.

ZOMFG MY COMPASS SED NORTH BUT I WUX GOING NORTHWEST, COMPASS IS BROKED!

But maybe instead of a huge blue blip maybe just a pencil marking or perhaps there can be certain points in a town entrance you can use to orientate yourself.

But... there are points all over the map you can use to orientate yourself! Hell, that's the primary method I use for finding my location after I log in slap-bang in the middle of nowhere - find a prominent landmark I can see in-game, take a bearing with the compass. Find another landmark I can see, take another bearing. Where the two lines overlap is where I am. Alternatively, just find a powerline or railway and follow the tracks - they're rare enough that there's usually only one or two heading in any given direction on the map, so use them to get a rough fix.

Although I would be very much in favour of being able to make 'personal' marks on my map rather than marks everyone can see. Would make the process much easier and safer. Has this been suggested/confirmed?

All interesting points.

OP is still right though.

And servers that remove waypoints should die a fiery death.

It gets to a point where you don't need a map to know wher you are. Further more it's a f**king paper map, it's not going to have a big blue dot showing you where you are, and it shouldn't, even in regular. So negatory on the blue dots.

In that case, remove the bone-healing morphine and gut-repairing bandages at once!

I think you're mistaking something that's been slightly simplified for the sake of playability for something that people are using as a crutch because they don't want to learn how to use a map properly. Anyone with half a brain knows that morphine will not cure a broken leg. However, we suspend our disbelief and say a little 'thank you' to the gaming gods for giving us a game where breaking your leg is even simulated/considered. Same with bandages.

The blue dot without a GPS is ONLY there to aid the player. It serves no other purpose. Once a player has found a GPS, I have no problem with the dot being on the map, but until they find a GPS, it's up to the player to fix their position manually.

Something not mentioned is the need for an altimeter. The topo's in this game vary a bit from the ones I am used to, and the need for a more clear representation of altitude would a add alot for me. I woud have no need for a GPS as long as we had map/compass/altimeter. Maybe a combo Compass/Altimeter would be cool.

This is already reminding me of that other thread where we had exactly the same conversation last week. :P

I still think my most enjoyable moments in DayZ are newly spawning on a beach in 1st person without a map or a weapon.

My heart still races, particulalrly if it's in those twilight hours where its not quite dark and not quite light.

Not knowing immediately where I am adds so much to the experience.

Unfortunately we seem to live in a time where people are used to things being done for them and spit the dummy when they don't get what they want. Funny.

In the standalone or mod is it possible to make it so that you come up on the map irrespective of what kind of difficulty mode your using?

Considering your guy is proficient in car repair, is a crack shot (if your me), can administer a lot of medicine etc I don't think being adept at cartography is that much of an ask xD Or maybe it only comes up after you acquire a map and a compass? Or does it do that already and I'm just slow.

I was about to "flame" you, and say that you must have never left your mom's basement, or went camping...blah, blah, blah. Then I took a step back, re-read your post, and realized that you are right, Sir. The Dayz character is so unrealistic that having a built-in GPS chip in tour brain seems perfectly natural.

I say get rid of everything...car repair/precise shooting/medicine/ and so on. I mean,

it's ridiculous, passed annoying, and just stupid/laughable...does anybody even realise that it is harder, and takes far more training, to fly an helicopter then a commercial airliner?

Remove all the nonsense, lunacy, and idiocy, from the game...that's the answer, not add more, and more idiocy.

Yes but the fact remains orientation is piss easy with the use of third party maps, the idea is to just eliminate the need to constantly alt tab? A lot of retards chipping in with a meaningless 2cents that am mount to dik all really, it just streamlines the experience without the need to alt tab? As I'd rather use the game map to orientate than the dayzdb map.

Ok, now I'll say it. You never left you're mom's basement, have you?

Orientation is easy? What are you, mentally challenged?

I'll drop you in the woods of your choice, and add-in a ton of maps, even military cartography maps...let's see how easy you find orientation to be. Hell, I'll even throw in a GPS...and bet you get lost, and starve to death...

No.

Even when I have a map and GPS, I still navigate using the DayZDB map and landmarks plus some north finding techniques. It's a hard habit to get out of once you start. This is a real world skill giving me an in-game advantage, from what I've heard the dev team are only looking to expand examples of this.

Yeah - the OP is completely right! Goddamn it! Why use my brain? It is so complicated this navigation thingy....and btw please remove the zombies from the game. Everytime I walk in the middle of the street they are coming to attack me. This is annoying. Oh, and please put out this strange behaviour of weapons - they are hurting so much if another player shoots at me....and I want to have pancakes! QQ

The whole point of veteran mode is that you are a VETERAN...

You know how to use the map, you know how to get a bearing and go places.

Besides that, learn to shift click the map if you suck so bad at navigating, that still works in veteran.

I break the legs of any survivor i see running in a straight line towards whatever building they want to enter etc. But they rarely if ever learn...

All people do is complain when they find something to be "too hard" instead of learning from their mistakes. I blame the consoles.

I'd like if you got the blue dot when you had a GPS on you. But honestly, if you have GPS you don't need a blue dot since finding yourself on the grid is incredibly easy.

(Also, you do realize you can shift-leftclick and set waypoints and regardless of difficulty?)
