whatsmynameagain 31 Posted February 13, 2013 Mortars would be found on barracks and mortar rounds will be scattered around the are. Mortar rounds can be thrown. You have to manually reload the Mortar when it runs out of ammo. It can easily knock out planes and vehicles. The ammo is beyond rare and only responds at random times.
gamerman001 182 Posted February 13, 2013 It would be pretty hard to hit a plane/helicopter with a mortar. I've tried in the arma 2 editor before.

intensity 157 Posted February 13, 2013 In my opinion, I don't think there really needs to be any "heavy" weaponry in a game like DayZ. Chernarus doesn't seem like the place to have mortars chillin' in the barracks, especially during a zombie apocalypse.
ORiGiN Machinima 215 Posted February 13, 2013 Hitting airborn targets with mortars?Hmm...To be honest, I'd rather like to see lower tech weapons, maybe even some improvised weaponary (Like what can be found in metro 2033). Instead of things like this. Remember, it's post apocalypse survival game, not ARMA 3.
enforcer1975 1111 Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) No no...hier tier ( how did this cod/moh term find it's way into the forum anyway since ArmA based weaponry was never devided in "tiers" but in classes ) weaponry is the key to survival in DayZ...because one day zombies will be wearing class X ballistic suits and helmets... IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted February 13, 2013 Mortar rounds can be thrown. You do know Mortars used now a days are pretty heavy right? Not only heavier but with a blast radius larger than your average grenade WITH an irregular flight pattern. That and you have to hit the firing pin at the BOTTOM of the mortar with something, otherwise your just throwing a big heavy peice of metal. You have to manually reload the Mortar when it runs out of ammo. It can easily knock out planes and vehicles. You don't know how a mortar really works do you? A mortar is not a clip fed item, nor is it something that you just keep a shell in the mortar. You set up the mortar tube, adjust it for where you want to land (which for most of us would be more or less guesswork without some kind of spotter). Drop the shell in and it goes off.
TheDesigner 1197 Posted February 13, 2013 It can easily knock out planes...No.. No... No it can't. Have you ever shot a mortar in ArmA? Obviously not.
thetamsen 57 Posted February 13, 2013 I want to be able to pick up a shovel from a farm and hit the zombies with it.Also, I think that there should be a hatchet spawn in every single farm that has firewood around its building... Would make sense, without making the game too easy. Picking up improvised items and throwing them (much like throwing empty cans) should also be a way to defend yourself from anything if you're unarmed, with a slight chance of knocking an enemy survivor/bandit unconscious if hit in the head.Heavy weaponry is lame, what the f*ck should we use that for in a blasted post-apocalyptic world, besides effectively destroying the very few survivors left in this world before they can even react? Would be nice if it could attract every zombie in a radius of 3km and logout will be cancelled for 5 minutes after firing it, but unfortunately players doesnt host zombies on such a distance.

IkaikaKekai 1957 Posted February 13, 2013 He watch a certain movie with Tom Hanks...If your talking about Windtalkers, yes I've seen that, thous are older and lighter mortars, probably 40mm or a compact 60mm. Today's mortars range from 60mm to 120mm (pretty sure the russians/soviets used 81-120mm motars) and aren't the 'grenade with fins' that the old ones were. Hell the old Japanese Ni mortar (which led to a few dumbass Marines breaking their legs when the put the baseplates on their knees to fire) is considered a 'grenade discharger' and was pretty small. kebman 213 Posted February 13, 2013 Wtf, why not just add armor as well? It would be the ultimate in zombie protection, with reactive plating.

intensity 157 Posted February 13, 2013 mortars? LOLFuck off dude, this isnt battlefield. The antimaterial rifles are already misplaced in the day Z universe, you want to put more devastating weapons in it?Personally, I don't mind the AMRs that bad, but I would rather have some rifles that are similar to the M24 (Maybe a little better), but not like an AS50. At the same time, I find myself using the M107 a majority of my recon play time because of it's power, range, and scope. Even if it is a dinner bell.
Death_Dealer 3155 Posted February 13, 2013 (edited) No. The mortars are very overpowered, I've played with them quite a bit with the editor. Even if the mortar rounds are rare, it can still pack a hell of a punch. Especially if you placed your shots in a place like Elektro or Cherno. The range on it is also ridiculous.Mortar rounds can be thrown.Watched a bit of Saving Private Ryan, eh? Edited February 13, 2013 by Willy Wonka

gamerman001 182 Posted February 14, 2013 I'm surprised there hasn't been an arty related hacking incident tbh. All it would take to completely grief a server would be to spawn one of those rocket trucks or a d30 in the center of the map. Next thing you know there's a hellfire of rockets or shells pounding down the major cities and the high value loot areas.... Fuck heavy weapons is my point.

Was pretty sure at one point in Windtalkers basically the same thing happens, mortar goes off in the tube instead of launching, Banzai charge happens and they hit the shells on a rock and throw them like grenades. PracticalTactical 164 Posted February 14, 2013 I love mortars, I really do! They are just so freaking awesome and kick ass! I remember how fantastic the mortar was in Far Cry 2...it was insanely difficult to learn but when you finally mastered it...oh boy you could rain death down on that patrol from 1000 meters away no problem. Usually I am the first to list all of the civilian and lower tech military weaponry that should be added in place of acogs, red dots and .50 cal sniper rifles. For some reason I look at this idea of a mortar and think it could actually fit in DayZ.A very rare item that could only be found only in "combat outpost" type military areas. It would not be found in barracks but would be found already in its mortar pit completely set up with several HE and a few smoke rounds in a neat order beside it. In a situation like what would happen in DayZ chances are allot of military outposts and checkpoints would be entirely overrun or abandoned thereby sometimes leaving some unique weaponry around. It would be a small, man portable mortar. No bigger than 60mm but would need multiple people to be able to carry both their survival gear and the tube, ammo, plates etc. It could be used to attack camps or plaster an area with a high density of Z's from a fair distance away. The mortar would have to be very difficult to use probably requiring good mathematical skills to calculate where the mortar round will be hitting using your map, compass and whatever else you would need to fire mortars. Plus if you have a dirty shiper somewhere on that hillside and you have the extremely rare mortar and know how to use it....you really don't need to know the exact position of the sniper, just keep popping them until the shots stop!
