Base Building. Barracading windows/doors

Recommended Posts

In the SA version on dayz, I was thinking it'd be cool if you could barracade windows/doors with items such as wood, or metal bars. And make that building your base. At the minute, barracading a building is just placing sandbags at the door, or barbed wire. But it'd be really awesome if zombies could try to break through the windows too.

What do you think?

I hope we can build some sort of base that could be found/looted by other players to some extent but also a way to 100% safely store gear for as long as your character isn't killed.

Like maybe a base that could be broken into with the right explosives but inside is an impenetrable safe that can be used as a safe "bank" mechanism with a limited amount of slots.

If by safe "bank" you mean some kind of shelf or cupboard then I'm all for it.

It could be anything but I hope to have a way to store at least a certain amount of gear/suppliers that is safe/unlootable for as long as your current character is alive.

Base-building is already being worked on.

There was some very interesting concept art on the Russian sub-forums.

These are mostly things like digging a hole to hide your backpack, and going as far as building a 4x8 meter room underground that you can hide in, included with a box to store items in, and is secured by a lockable door.

That was over 5 months ago, though. No idea if it'll actually happen.

You should link that thread Russian. I never go on the Russian forums so I guess I'm missing out. :(

Standalone content like base building and more end-game material has been pretty much promised by the development team. How they decide to implement it is still up for grabs. It would appear that "underground structures" is the primary leader when base building is discussed. So as much as people would like to barricade windows and doors, and put a padlock on something to secure it... while not impossible, it's probably unlikely.

Subject to change of course, but from everything I've watched/read/heard would suggest that it's not going to happen.

oh well, i dont really mind if its not included, it'd just add variety to the base building.

Then you put 2 more charges and break open teh damn thing. Yeah that would be cool. If you really think it's a good idea to have unbreakable safe, then you sir have not yet fully understood DayZ.

It certainly will be nice to have a few different loot storage options. Tent's offer about as much camouflage as Jimmy Saville in a bush, and vehicles likewise, that coupled with their desirability and tendency to blow skyward. A little hole for my pack, a hole which only a dog could sniff out sounds great.

Incase anyone is interested, at the time Rocket suggested using underground construction the reasoning he used was that if players could build structures above ground, servers would eventually get cluttered by all the shacks. Which is a very good point, although surely at some point there would be so many tunnels around the place that Chernarus could go the way of Jacinto...

And if you think that the SA is going to be the same as the current Alpha state you have not yet fully understood game development.

Because we can't be logged in 24/7 guarding our gear (you know, real life and stuffz) I think it is perfectly reasonable to implement a safe way of storing a limited amount of gear while you are logged out.

That argument is hardly valid, and I think Rocket said above ground structures was more of a "performance" issue. Requiring blueprints, and a lot of resources such as scavenging for nails or making lumber would definitely cut down on "clutteredness" as it would take a lot of time to gather.

Structures were done brillantly in Starwars Galaxies. They didn't require instancing, and they offered a ton of customization/options/styles. Also, they weren't cluttered around. Granted they required ingame money to maintain them or they would be removed (which aided in no cluttering) but getting a house in that game just meant you had to have all the stuff to build one... or more easily just buy one from a builder. It would be a lot more rare in Day Z, especially if blueprints were relatively rare.

I suspect the underground structures will be pretty private, and only enterable by who you allow. I could be wrong, as the development team seems unforgiving in many aspects (which people like) in that nothing you have, other than what is on your person, is really safe. I agree, a safe would be ideal. Maybe a suitcase with a combination... Maybe a locker with a padlock... but none of them should be player proof. If they are going to add lockable items, then they need to add a way to get into those items.

How about a safe that you can lock with a combo, and when you die the safe is open for everyone to loot, but if someone chooses to, or you can run back and lock it again. This would make for some interesting gameplay where you are trying to hunt someone who locked your safe

*cough* *points at avatar*

There were many problems with the way structures are implemented in Star Wars Galaxies. There was indeed cluttering, an elaborate system that decides where a player can build structures and where he can't, abandoned houses remaining for years until SOE added the pack-up-all-your-shit feature in vanilla, I could go on. Character limits to restrict how many houses players can have, and a lot of abuse of that restriction.

Not to even begin with all the technical things they did wrong *shakes head in misery*

No. It won't be like Alpha, better than Alpha. But you have to know that if people find you're stuff it's part of the game. You lose and find stuff. Over and over and over and over again. The cycle repeats itself. It's made like this. And by the way there IS a safehouse for when you're not there; it's called your character and you usually don't need anything else that you can't hold.

Barricading could work really well up until the point that people spawn in your barricaded base/house/floor/building... maybe a solution is to have people only despawn outdoors or something? Breaking into someones barricaded building should be no easy task either if the person has done it well. This way it could fix the problem of being AFK for several hours as most of us are due to life. Obviously explosives are an exception but then you'll just blow up the whole building and ruin the loot so could be a bit pointless...

Welp. I guess I have nothing better to do.

Edit; Upon re-reading the thread, it seems about just as much of a suggestion as any other forum member's suggestion with some additional pictures. So it's not official, but Rocket has mentioned base-building, similar to that thread's concept/suggestions.
