Disadvantages To Carrying/Using AS50/M107

Recommended Posts

Thinking about this recently, and although I have and do still use these guns... I have lately felt that they are somewhat overpowered within the world of DayZ.

This being said removing them may not be the best option in my opinion, as DayZ still needs the fear and reality of a "1 Hit Kill Sniper". This being said, one thaught/idea I have had is that maybe instead of removing them rather add a "disadvantage" of sorts to them.

One such disadvantage I have thaught on is the idea: that by carrying such a weapon, you forfit the ability to carry a backpack at the same time. This would add a whole new level of tactical thinking to the game and would promote squad positions and duties such as who would be the groups sniper? etc...

Just wanting to get some of my ideas out there! ;)

What does the rest of the community think on the matter? and what "disadvantages" would you suggest?

Keep well All! :)

I think the crosshair should be removed on all difficulties since it's really easy to hip shot this sniper. Also, the size of those things are massive! I would like to have a backpack but maybe the gun could eat up some space in the internal inventory due to the weight. You should also be slower because of how cumbersome and unwieldly it is.

Yes, Removal of the cross hair system would definatly make this weapon harder to use in close quater combat situations. Thats a great idea which if I am not mistaken is being considered for the standalone which is great. :)

I never really thaught of much else than the reduction of inventory space as a negative effect of carrying such a large gun... But the idea of moving slower as a result would also be very interesting and in fact make allot of sense. :)

I would guess that in reality people would not under any normal circumstances be running around with such a large sniper hipfiring.. :S haha.

Thanks for your input man! :D

I like the idea of having to choose your backpack or the sniper. I dont like the idea of moving slower tho, since it takes lots of time moving around already and the map is getting bigger? In group play you would slow every one else down aswell. If you got low inventory space you cant camp as much, and have to move around more to find food and stuff.

now we're discussing a weight system?

might aswell just add the ACE mod to DayZ

If you don't know what the ACE mod is and you're playing Arma, shame on you.

A weight-based endurance system make more sense.

Travel light? You can run further before getting out of breath and burn less calories, so need to eat less frequently.

Pack mule? Limits your mobility and burns more calories.

Currently weight and length of a gun makes no difference in DayZ

The m107 is 140cm long and weighs 14kg with every bullet weighing at 650grams each.

In comparison a Smaller gun like an MP5 weighs 3kg and is 35cm at the shortest.

It's quite unbalanced that both of these guns are equally easy to manage in a short range gunfight. When there's no disadvantages to using any one weapon the guy with the biggest gun will always be the winner. Just the fact that you can run around at the same speed with both of these weapons is quite unrealistic.

If you got low inventory space you cant camp as much, and have to move around more to find food and stuff.

That was my initial reasoning behind having to make the choice of either carrying a backpack or a 50. cal sniper. As after using these guns enough times now, I have come to realise that there is no "real" disadvantage to using the M107/AS50 over other smaller and more versatile guns available. However a weighting system would definatly add to the mechanics and tactical gameplay aspect of the game.

Nice to see everyone's views and ideas comming together here. :)

Keep Well all!

Or make it have more recoil.

You ARE a civilian, after all.

You probably wouldn't know how to shoot anti-material rifles with the accuracy of a trained sniper.

This could definatly be an option to be honest, as currently the AS50 for me atleast feels as if it has little to no recoil, much less so then the M107 atleast.

If you have to go prone to use the as50 it would be much harder to get a clear shot.

This is a nice idea, maybe there should be restrictions on at what stance your character is able to fire the weapon/fire the weapon effectively. Maybe a system where there is a small yet still plausible possibility to damage yourself firing the weapon from a standing or hip firing stance...

or maybe the weapon should just sway to much to make the shot?

Weight system = excellent idea.

guns going into backpacks = only if the gun could actually fit in it in real life.

I would go further than the weight system (or rather I would take the weight system 1 step further)

Volume system.

Your backpack has a 'volume' in cubic cm's

Every item naturally has its own volume.

Every item naturally has its own weight.

It shouldn't be too difficult to add a volume, weight, length, width and height parameter to each object so that your backpack, inventory, weapon carrying ability is much more realistic and also then by proxy affect your walking and running speed, but also your 'stance'

When I say 'stance' I mean this:

person carrying no weight, standing up can stand perfectly upright in a vertical position.

A person carrying 80kg in a backpack has to lean forward to correct for their center of gravity.

This would also affect your crouched stance as well.

This could be shown in game with weight directly affecting your player model and would allow you to determine how much another survivor is carrying.

I would love to see an end to the current ridiculous inventory system and having instead, a more realistic weight/volume/size based system.

It only needs weight and handling disadvantages...powerful weapons have a tendency to have these disadvantages. In order to make a person choose either food or firepower they should have to choose either a backpack or a gunbag for their big rifle / or carry the rifle on the back and the personal inventory should be limited as well...you barely fit a can of beans into the magpouches of a carrying vest. Maybe a can of beans and a canteen or can of coke.

Stamina should also play a big role when lugging around heavy stuff.

Let's see what the devs will do for the SA.

maybe you could get a improvement on your endurance the more days you stay alive.

Then all you have to do is create a new character then stay offline for weeks then you have your super character because the system counts the days regardless if you played or not...

And muscles don't equal endless power, even those will grow weak and resting a weapon is the best way to gain accuracy.

Im sure they could fix it so you would have to be online for 24hours to count it as one day. I didnt think it should be endless, but just a little bit better.
