I don't think that removing 3rd person would be the same as removing zombies. It is named DayZ for a reason. Zombies are part of the game and in my opinion, 3rd person is not. 3rd person is simply a feature. My main point is, by removing 3rd person, 1st person will be more than just a minor feature that players will use because 3rd person indoors is too hard. You go by popularity a lot and as Rista stated multiple times already, if the devs go by popularity, DayZ would be a watered down version of the idea it is originally based on.

I don't see how removing 3rd person, would make DayZ a hardcore, colorless and boring zombie simulation game. There is a lot of good examples in the market that showcases fun and immersive gameplay even without the option for 3rd person, the devs should be inspired by these games(S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and Metro 2033). Though they differ in terms of modes(Multiplayer and Singleplayer) the core ideas of these games are almost exactly the same which is a post-apocalyptic and barren zombie/mutant survival game. Beside stating that removing 3rd person is a massive decision, what exactly do you think would change if 3rd person is removed?

You should give change a try man. Nothing is written in stone, it sounds to me as if you only don't want 3rd person removed because its been part of DayZ for too long already you can't accept its removal, but hey look where the crosshair is going, the only sad part is it is only removed because the masses wants it removed and I don't think that's the case for 3rd person.

To come in conclusion, I'm suggesting 1st person should be on all the time like zombies are and no, I don't think removing 3rd person would be the same as removing zombies. Zombies are what shaped the DayZ universe, they are the threat for everyone, they are not features that server owners gets to decide to turn on or off, they are constantly there no matter what server you play on. 3rd person is simply a feature to boost the sales because removing it means a huge loss to the player base of casual gamers who can't and don't want to adapt to the mechanics and gameplay changes of the SA.

Don't get me wrong I played the hell out of ArmA and played a lot on expert with everything disabled, so I got a decent idea of what first person has to offer. However I were pretty much done with ArmA after playing it for several years. DayZ brought me back and DayZ is plenty challenging even in third person, however it's a little bit more enjoyable for me in third person.

First person just don't do it for me at the moment and as Yahtzee described it, it's a bit like having a dishwasher strapped to your head, even BI acknowledge that they implemented third person to grant the player a compensation for the lack of personal awareness. I don't really rely on personal waypoints and peripheral dots make it easy to scan for zombie activity beyond the horizon, but I just disagree that DayZ/ArmA is only a first person shooter.

I've got no problem with first person view, I almost always switch to iron sights when pulling the trigger, but I, like many other DayZ players prefer to play on third person servers. I accept that it's not for everyone, however I feel it's up to first person players to fill up their own servers, rather than to recruit us, by removing our preferred mode. I can't understand why, when there's apparently such a massive demand for first person view, why you can't fill up servers?

You keep repeating third person waters down the experience and it should be removed despit it's wide popularity, but that's not true. It's a legit part of the game and it's a legit part of interacting with the gameworld, it's great and it's been part of ArmA way before third person shooters became the new cool thing. Thinking of DayZ or ArmA as a exclusive first person experience is a too narrow way of looking at this multifaceted game.

The main argument is still, remove third person, so we can fill up our first person servers. You need to stop relying on third person players and you really need to stop joining third person servers, if you prefer to play first person.

How about if you force server admins to have the tag "WIMP MODE" or "CARTOON MODE" in their server name whenever 3rd person is activated?

This 1000x.

Features, especially ones like third person that fundamentally alter the way players behave, need to be critically evaluated by the developers in the context of what they want DayZ to be. If they want a game where the player has near perfect awareness of their immediate surroundings and distant attacks are the only surprises third person makes perfect sense. If they want a game where awareness is limited and players are constantly forced to make life or death decisions based on their imperfect knowledge about what is around the next corner third person makes no sense at all.

Clearly I prefer the later, but then again I would never dream of turning off the fog of war in a game like Jagged Alliance or X-COM where death matters and tactics (with a little luck) are what keep you alive .

This is really all there is to it.

Now, the team needs to polish up 1st person and have it go through a good amount of testing so there are no flaws with it compared to other titles on the market where all the kids play 1st without whining and crying about not having the option to meta game around corners or over cover.

Alternatively, you could make it so that there is a special head slot skin for people in 3rd person, like a big paper cone with "DUNCE" on it. Then they could have their 3rd person perspective in but real men would be able to see them from behind cover, plotting and scheeming to "pwn" you using meta game information.

So...are we done here?

Still, I feel like giving the option that will affect everybody in the server to the server owners is too much, I think the only thing that server owners should have the power over are graphical components of the game, maps and the administration of his server the rest should be written in the game itself because I think giving the server owner to alter the gameplay experience of everybody in his server is a bit too game-breaking in my opinion and separates people with different preferences. By keeping 3rd person and having filters for severs as many of you suggests, DayZ is pretty much catering for the masses and that's not a good thing, 1st person and 3rd person players should be unified so that DayZ as a standalone would be more refined even if it does mean removing a feature that the majority of players really loved but if DayZ was to stick to its promise of a zombie simulation game, then I don't think 1st person would be removed, ever(meaning 3rd person has to go).

I believe that if 3rd person was removed, you and many others would eventually adapt to the hopefully improved 1st person view in the SA. You may not see what 3rd person player can do to affect the game but if you watch videos about DayZ on youtube, almost 90% of the uploaders only use it for one thing, exploits and so do many others and that waters down the experience of those loyal and much more used to 1st person. The poll pretty much speaks for itself when 2 of the choices that would make the game extremely easy if you use 3rd person is pretty much used by the majority(Better view of surroundings and seeing zeds/people while in cover). This community contradicts itself so much I think the developers are better off making decisions themselves and not rely on the community votes too much.

I don't think anyone has talked about this yet - third person is only just playable on my laptop (max 14 FPS | min 7 FPS).

It is unplayable in first person. If 3rd person was removed, I couldn't play the game; it's as simple as that.

Apart from that, first person view is not well done in the game. It's very difficult to have any sort of spacial awareness, and feels claustrophobic most of the time. Running through a forest seems like your head is two feet off the ground. If that was fixed, then more people might play 1st person servers more.

Which comes to the last point - even if it was fixed, it should be left as a server-side setting so people have a choice. You've got no good reason to try to remove 3rd person entirely, except that you're butt-hurt that the 1st person servers are empty and boring.
