Interested in buying Arma II (and hence DayZ)

Hello there,

I've been scoping around Arma II for a while reading what's it about and watching videos and I'm more than certain I want to buy both the actual game and get the mod as well.

However, I told a friend of mine about my intentions and he told me not to buy it because of the huge amount of hackers both in the actual game and in the mod.

Any thoughts?

Should I buy it despite that?

I love the game, and have not encountered a hacker in 3 months.

Whatever you do, DO NOT join public servers. Do some research and find a private, whitelisted server to play on. Everyone complains about hacking, but that's just because they play on public servers.

I would suggest purchasing it as you wont be disappointed. If you want to play dayz and avoid the hacker wave try to find yourself a good private hive for home turf to play on with good admins, that will take away a majority of the woes that most hacking has caused. All in all I would recommend getting it for its current price its a great deal for the amount of gameplay you will get.

There are a lot of hackers in DayZ, less so in ArmA 2 multiplayer modes but they are still there. If I were me, I'd buy it anyways because it's arguably the most realistic infantry sim and I like that sort of thing.

I'm not sure about stock ArmA 2, don't really play it much, but if you stick to well admined private hive servers with whitelist or password protection in DayZ then hackers aren't a problem. I haven't seen one for months.

Go through the private hive discussion on this forum and look through the listed servers to find one that suits your needs would be a good place to start for that andrestor.

Don't use the server browser to look. You will need to apply to their websites to get on the whitelist. Just being private isn't enough, you need a whitelist too.

The hacking in this game is absolutely ridiculous, yes.

The problem with ArmA II is that they pretty much allow its users to easily script and modify the game. Why? Because ArmA II is more or less based on a system of trust which relies on its player base not to cheat. Which cheating in the vanilla ArmA games isn't much of a problem because they're for the most part a niche group of mostly mature, like-minded individuals. That's not the case for this mod. And for them to address the scripting would --apparently-- break every mod for the game.

Though if you're going to play this game and be serious about it you need to play on a private server. No, it doesn't completely solve the problem - but it does a good enough job. This is because they're whitelisted and most hackers aren't going to want to go through the hassle of signing up just to be banned shortly after. Of course that's only the noticeable cheaters who script in stuff.

A hive is a database that you and other people connect and save your characters to. Which there are two kinds: the main hive and the private hives.

• The main hive is the official DayZ database. Playing on a server that's connected to the main hive means that you can hop from server to server and still have your character progression.
  
• Private hives are just that - private. These are ran by the server owners themselves and aren't connected to any server(s) other than their own.
  

To find private hives you can use DayZ Commander and then uncheck the "hide unofficial." However I'd recommend checking the forums/Reddit for a good server (that way you can read people's opinions).

I can really say I did not regret a single day since I have buyed ArmA2:CO.

First of all: DayZ. Yes, there are hackers, yes there are bugs - but overall on a good server with active admins you can play very good. (If you want to be sure to get on a secure server go and get yourself whitelisted)

Arma2 in gerneral: I think it is the most underrated game of the last years. There are so many mods who are really good. I could recommend Wasteland or Takistan Life Revolution.

So if you do not want to wait for the standalone (realease maybe April?) just get ArmA2:CO. It is not very expensive and you'll have a balst of a time with it. As well as you support Bohemia. Quiet good reasons, I would say :)

They are rife with hackers. Private, whitelisted servers with active admins are the way to go. I avoided them for a long time, but I have seen the light, and it's beautiful.
