Church orientation

Recommended Posts

I've just been wondering.

One less known fact is, since the early medieval times, churches are orientated. Effectively placing the main gate at the west end and the altar at the east end. This is done in order to have sunlight shining on the altar for the morning mess. Who's able to read German (and understand what he just read), can get more information about that in this wikipedia article.

Or simply look it up yourself, if you don't speak German.

Anyway, I am wondering if this is correct for the different DayZ maps, too.

I am going to try to confirm it everytime I hit a church or a monestary. Whenever I do so, I will post here which churches are confirmed. But I am far too lazy to open up Chernarus in the mission editor and simply check it out, so if anyone like to do so, to confirm it, be my guest. And if anyone of you can confirm it for the other maps, please do so. I will update this first post with confirmed churches. And by the way, since sunrise isn't exactly east, the doors still may be off my 5° to 25° degrees. This should still count as "confirmed".

Confirmed churches so far:

(The letters are referring to the door direction. Not the direction of the altar. List is organised alphabetically.)

Chernarus (43% orientated so far):

E - Berezino c (checked it out myself)

W - Cherno South West Church (checked it out myself)

N - Elektro (thanks to Krihelio)

S - Krasnostav cs (checked it out myself)

W - Mogilevka (thanks to Axe Wielding Musty Train)

S - Novy (thanks to bluecrackers)

W - Progorevka (thanks to iegle | he said he was pretty sure, further confirmation would be nice)

Key:

c=closed

cs=refers to the closed church model with wooden stairs in front of the entry.

Hello there

Very interesting indeed, I never thought about churches and their orientation.

But AFAIK at least one has a N/S orientation, I can think of one that has an opening to the west. But this is from memory so I may be wrong.

Good idea.

Muffins for you.

Exactly. I'd be dissapointed if the majority of churches would face the wrong direction, but I wouldn't lose too many tears about it. But if it helps me orientate, it's worthwile knowledge.

I'm pretty sure the door/gate in the church in Progorevka is on the north side of the building, with the altar to the south.

Nice. So far, 75% of the churches are orientated. If that number keeps up, it will be a nice addition to orientation in this game.

If players don't know how to orientate themselves without the aid of a church, then you deserve to be lost. What next moss on trees?

Who ignores a mean to survive also deserves to die.

(PS: The opinion shown in this comment is related to 'in game'. I don't say you deserve to die in real life.)

Moss on trees would be great.
