Why is view distance set by the server?

Recommended Posts

From the top of my head, I can think of five reasons why this is a bad:

1.Flying a heli with <2k distance removes the immersion

2.My m107 is now useless

3.The game now looks like shit

4.Cannot spot vehicles from afar

5.Cannot scout out places before I make a move

I mean seriously, this game is about realism and immersion.

Because allowing people to set it however they want would break the servers.

Probably because of balance. If a player with a bad PC sets his view distance to 1km and a sniper with a good PC sets his to 3km and snipes him, it would be unfair! But increasing it a bit wouldn't hurt O.o

If that would be the reasoning behind it, it would be a terrible one. If I had a crappy PC that could only handle 1km drawdistance or less I wouldn't want anyone else to suffer for it just for the sake of "fairness". It's not unfair for some to have better drawdistance.

I find the entire thing of 1km drawdistance horrible and hate it's guts so much. DayZ has many issues in the mod, but the drawdistance is one that gets to me the absolute most, yes even more than hackers. I hope they give the option to at the very least triple it, I'm not fond of having a white, cloudy wall ahead of me when scouting ahead. it's so... 2005.

That is really terrible reasoning, some people play the game at 20 fps, that does not mean we should all play at 20 fps for the sake of fairness.

Yeah, fairness is not proper reasoning in the slightest. For example: My internet is horrible, and I frequently have to deal with 400+ ping, regardless of what server I'm on. Should everyone's ping be matched to mine for fairness too?

Well, I'm not sure if the mod limited it, or the server or the game. But I'm pretty sure it can be increased as some mods allow higher view distances

if the case about being fair was it then why can players turn of grass by themself ? i think thats very unfair right there

unless a patch changed that ...

Servers can force signatures checks to kick players for that

It was set to a lower level to reduce the possibilty to snipe from a greater distance.

Turn off DayZ, set your view distance 4000 m (will bring many machines to their knees) go into the editor and test.

Mission data, not server side.

So I believe !

Bone is right about the mission setting the VD, not the server. However, my desktop is atleast 2 years old and I use 10km VD and get 20-30 FPS in OA so I would very much like a higher VD in DayZ.

Depends on what you are running, try the camaign with a high VD or even the benchmarks with the distance pumped up and everything on high !

I got a good machine, i5 2500k, 8go of ram, 460gtx, 24" 120mhz 3D Vision monitor,creative X-Fi gamer 5+1 speakers TrackIR 5, so yea, no real problem here.

ToH, is another story.

Two points seem to be missed here:

1. Fog and seasons are realistic.

2. The game comes with suggested computer requirements. If you cannot handle them, the do not complain.

wat? I think most people here are complaining about too short VD set by DayZ, not the other way around.

700-1000 Meter is fair enough for me. Like anybody can see 10.000 meter. And btw, it increases everybody's FPS. and its fair.

I really don't think there are computers that will run Chernarus on the highest view distances while maintaining a high resolution and graphics quality. I have a i7 with nice graphics card and I can't pump out more than ~25-30 fps on insane view distance setting while playing the Wasteland game mode. In some parts of the map it's even worse.(~10fps)

So, what would happen is people would lower their resolution and graphics settings, just to get the advantage of seeing further, which is a HUGE advantage in a game like DayZ. Thus, we would ALL have to adjust our view distances (and video settings) to stay competitive with them.

I don't expect people to go buy new computers to stand a chance against those that do, that's fucked up.

There's also the fact that zombies don't spawn until you're close enough to them. So if we could all see kilometers around us, it would be even easier to spot where players are..... just look for the zombies in the distance.

I read somewhere that Dayz is hard limited to 1600m VD. I would like to be allowed to increase it to 3000 m if I wish, at least.

Hello there

I was always under the impression it was to level the playing field for those with low spec machines.

I think that's fine. Why penalise folk who cannot afford an uber setup? How about thinking about others?

Yeah I guess they could make some servers with e.g. 4km VD and some with default 1600m. When it comes to the mod, the community has the option to change this though, so why haven't they?

They make fair what they can control. View distance can be controlled server side so they set a cap to make it fair for everyone. Ping rates cannot be controlled, although most servers are set to kick people with high pings because it does effect everyone.

I don't understand why this is suddenly such an issue considering VD has been capped since the mod was first released and the reasoning is obvious; it drastically improves server performance and is one way of leveling the playing field for everyone. I play single player missions with a VD of 3500m but have never been bothered by the 1600m limit in the mod.
