Not starting with backpacks

How often have you fresh-spawned and thought "Ugh, this piddly 8 slot coyote patrol pack"

What if it wasn't there?

Being limited to what you can carry as soon as you spawn would make you prioritize "necessities" forcing you not only to account for food and drink you might need in the future, but also ammo and potential light-sources.

This could be coupled with a slight adjustment of the spawn-rates of backpacks. (As well as throwing that "piddly" ol' Coyote patrol pack into the spanw mix).

I'm fairly certain I've seen Patrol packs at spawn points, maybe dumped by a player now that I think about it.

This would fit the bill perfectly.

It really doesn't make sense that everyone already has a backpack, but they're not carrying anything.

It would be far better if we all started with nothing, Then folks might learn to appreciate the little things.

Maybe start out with a vest pouch, would at least make them useful for something.

Would make the lesser (czech vest pouch) a much more suitable option.

Though hopefully with the reworked inventory and clothing systems we will have a better management/availability of things to carry.

Player starting in plain clothes would have a very limited inventory. Clothing can increase inventory. Cargo pants, hunting vests, jackets, etc.

Most of those people have more than a flashlight and painkillers in that bag though.

So it's safe to say that the backpack isn't someone's bug-out bag.

I would go as far as to say most backpacks would never handle the torture of an apocalypse. Whether they fall apart from weight, abrasions, weather conditions, etc. Even the crap they would issue us in the military would get ripped, clips break, fall apart, etc.

There are higher quality bags available that I don't think many would have in their home.

All in all I think you're missing the purpose the op is suggesting. Backpacks might be pretty commonly found item, but I agree they shouldn't be some starting equipment.

I would even go as farther as to say your character would start with zero equipment, but that's just me.

Most people drop their backpacks when they spawn only because FrankieonPC1080p does it.

I always find patrol packs along the coast everywhere.

Backpacks should also affect your movement. Giving you advantages to not having one versus having the largest in the game. Not saying you would move to a crawl using a "coyote" sized backpack, but there would definitely be some modifiers involved.

it's a good idea for now, but with the new inventory system in the standalone, you can only carry stuff in your backpack, outside the backpack, you only have room for primary, secondary and pockets (primarily used for mags) and since the new inventory system is based off of the item's size, yuo would only be able to carry 1 can of beans if you want to have a bandage and 1 mag for a pistol, don't get me wrong I would love to see DayZ like this, where you'd have to choose between carrying 1 can of beans and a mag or 1 can of beans and a bandage, but it's also unrealistic, who doesn't have a backpack? I have like 3, and that's only me, my dad has some and my sister also has a couple so in my house there's around 10 backpacks

Also, there's no assurance you'd have your backpack if you washed up on the shore of some quasi-former-soviet island-nation.

there was a screenshot or a concept art released by one of the devs a couple months ago, I'll see if I can find the link, but it showed that you could only carry a couple of mags outside your backpack

how about rather, have a small chance to spawn with coyote or alice or better(better ofcourse has lower chance) and a high chance to spawn with no backbag.

I am all for this. The less you spawn with the more fun you have in my opinion. Maybe randomize it so you have a 5% chance of spawning with a patrol pack or another starting item (flashlight, medical supplies, beans) but only ONE item.

I dunno. Then people will just do the whole.. run to a zombie, die, respawn with something else (that they do anyway to spawn at their desired location along the shore)

An absolute no brainer. Thumbs up and beans to you.

I would like to see a benefit of not having a bag at all though. Maybe a change in weapon handling? Being able to swing your weapon around more easily?
