Return to DayZ worth it?

Recommended Posts

I played DayZ quite awhile back, and I liked it, initially.

The fun of permadeath, trying to stay alive, exploring ruins and crossing vast terrains is quite appealing. I like the post-apocalyptic approach and the survival theme of the game.

However, after two weeks or so of playing I realized the game is not about survival. It's about getting food+water+sniper rifle, then go hunt other players. Aside from premades (i.e. clans and/or friends playing together) hardly anyone works together. 9 out of 10 times you get shot on sight.

So the game became completely boring to me after that. There was simply nothing to do in the game other than hunt other players. Noone wants to waste bullets on zombies, especially not when there is nothing to gain from doing so. Furthermore the game became near unplayable from script kids, duping and hacking...

So yeah, I quit and I haven't even looked at the game until now (saw the patch notes on facebook).

Has anything really changed?

Is it still the same get food+water+sniper then hunt players which is the entire concept of the game?

Just trying to figure out if it's worth reinstalling the game again at all or not.

Nothing major has changed, prepare to buy the SA!

Lots of new maps though, make playing all new and shiny again.

I'm not sure if we can really help you, it's a decision you have to make yourself TBH.

Since you last played theres been a lot of bug fixing, new maps released, new vehicles and various tweaks. Essentially it's still a sandbox game (mod) though and the amount of fun you have is really only limited by your imagination. If it's lacking something for you, maybe better to wait for the standalone which is just around the corner and will have much more content.

Hello there

There are no *major* changes but different servers run different rules. Perhaps locate a non bandit server?

What I dislike about the game is how there is nothing left to do after you put 3 cans of coke and 4 steaks in your backpack.

Which means people just run around and try to find and kill other players because that's all there is left to do.

Zombies spaz out when chasing you making shooting them problematic (I don't mind them being fast, but there is a difference between fast and glitched), which means there is no point shooting them unless you want to waste your bullets and let every sniper for miles hear you.

I guess if game hasn't changed, and it's basically a sniper simulator with food/water thrown in then I'll just leave it be and hope for the SA to offer more content-wise.

Like I say, it's still basically a sandbox mod. For some they struggle to think of things to do so run around killing random people. Others with more imagination have set up vast organised clans with complex distribution networks and are never stuck for things to do.

i had to pause due to real life implications, and long to come back.. sure there is KoS, but thats not what i remember.. i remember the glowlight-lit disco party with ABBA playing over direct comm and satchel fireworks, the chopper rides to Wagners "Ride of the Valkyries", the hospital raids to resupply medics, the many, many friendly, grateful people, who, i met when running as medic or supply.. oh those glorious times when we drove the 'Shagwagon' along the coast, the competitions who can ride a bicicle faster down a hill (116 kph was my best attempt).. oh and dont forget the dreaded ATV and how you can ride it to the moon when crossing onto a bridge.. so many fond memories..

we had fun shootouts too, joining a clan server with 15 people all in same attire to hunt down bandits and their camps, or fighting for hours to hold krutoy cap and thus secure the way to skalisty.. so much fun..

Most fun is playing in a group for me. There is always someone that needs to be picked up, geared up, rescued. Making those trips often involves going into dangerous territory.

I have recently met an abundant of friendly people, once you find someone else there is just loads of more things to do. I too am hoping for standalone to have many more things but I think I might have set my expectation just a little to high.

Don't forget you supplied me with my first ever MK 48 mod 0. Happy day's!

You have no imagination at all.

Plus why would u need food and water to snipe?

The content is in ur brain...and ur brain is small.

The zombies at least will be fixed somewhat in the SA - I'm not playing Dayz now till the SA comes out. I want a break from it (played it for 4 months practically solid) so when it does come out it'll be fresh again AND it will actually play towards how it was envisioned rather than how the arma 2 engine handled it. Looking forward to the updated map as well - I hope they add in a few easter eggs in for us.

the game has no concept besides "do what you want". it's what the players make out of it.

I completely understand the concept of sandbox games. I've played multiple sandbox games before, from EVE Online to Minecraft.

However, those games actually have content in them, as in... you can do what you want, but the game actually has the features in it to allow you to do so.

DayZ have no features in place to allow you to do what you like. You are limited to find water+food (no you don't need water+food to snipe, but you can't really snipe when you are dead from starvation can you?), find a gun and ammo... and then what? Put a vehicle together?

There's so much KOS in the game because it's the only thing left to do once you are stocked up on nourishment and ammo. There's no reason to visit Cherno anymore, other than killing people who are trying to get stocked up on aforementioned items.

If minecraft only gave you food+drink and a sword, it would get real boring in the long run. However, they added multiple things, such as the nether, different types of mobs, the ability to create farms or breed livestock, pistons and redstone items... and that's what a sandbox game is about... having nothing but the world in front of you and a range of tools or features... then do what you want with those without any quest objectives or NPC's telling you to do this or do that.

Sure, DayZ has the world, but the tools and features are so lacking there is nothing to do but gun for other players. You can't build bases... barbwire? please... I log out, log in on another server, run inside your barbwire, log back onto the first server and voila, I ghosted past your whole defenses.

Yeah, DayZ is a sandbox.

However, it's a sandbox with very limited amount of sand and no tools to build or make use of the sand.

i say come back 100%, if only to get you in the mood for the standalone and back in the swing of things!

Also, play private hive. I used to only play public and didnt 'get' private hives at all, but i havent looked back. First positive is on the right servers, passworded and whitelisted with good admins, hacking is 99.9% gone. Finding vehicles and storing them along with camps becomes a must and actually stays put. Also, with side chat and a tighter community, there becomes more point to the game.
