hey guys

heard about this game from anther game i play (world war 2 online) which up until at the point day z loaded i thought was hard. :P

downloaded all the stuff from steam so had plenty of opportunity to read up about the game before i got going.

so on my first day i ran north, managed to find a few bits and bobs to keep me going. i found a pond and tried to refil my water bottle but for some reason the animation dipped my head under water. it didn't seem to do me any good and everything went white and i started passing out quite frequently, i ran around looking for medical supplies, and somehow managed to fall out of a deer stand breaking my leg. i looked around for some land marks and reset my character as i had nothing to heal myself.

2nd attempt i tried finding my body, but could see where i had been. i thought i was heading north, but seems i had been running around in circles. found another weapon and thought id check out a city, must have got about 50 yard away when i was sniped from somewhere. i think it might have been elktro, i was in the open. It was a daft move, and i paid the price for that.

3rd attempt i started looking at an offline map to see where i was going, not in the spirit of the game i know.

i managed to navigate myself to a very tall tower, which after a quick look on the forum told me it was green mountain, and it was best avoided. being very carefull i made my way up there in any case. :) disapointed to find it had just been looted.

i ran into my first close encounter with another survivor, i was in a church in a nothern town taking some painkiller, when a bloke just ran in with a pistol, he said something in russian i think, he unequippen his pistol and sat crossed legged in front of me. thing is though that he had a bandit mask on so i wasn't about to trust him. I just legged it of of there and never looked back. i guess i could have killed him, but he could have easily killed me, so i would have felt bad if i had done.

getting a bit easier as im recognising the buildings like supermarkets and fire stations.

anyway its a great game, looking forward to the standalone too. :D

Hi, Mile. Welcome to DayZ. You sound like another player who's off to a good start. The trick with the water is don't go in too deep. Then right click on your water and click "fill waterbottle". That's it.

Here's the dayzdatebase map, which is god but an in game map is best. You find them mainly in towns in stores and cafes/bars. http://dayzdb.com/map#3.069.075

Have a read through the threads at the top of this forum. You'll find them useful.

cheers guys, thanks for the great replies.

i did try to fill the water bottle at the edge, but it wasn't letting me for some reason.

i have been reading the tips, and saw that i can fill a water bottle at the pumps, so that was very handy. :)

thanks for the link for the map.

i love exploring, big fan of the fallout games and elder scrolls. feels just like im in the capital wasteland.

its an amazing game, starting out with no map make you feel so lost, and when i found one, i felt paranoid that i'd lose it. lol

i do have a few questions

About the microphone, do i need to change any settings for it? i have one that i use for TS3 on another game, so is it good to go in the game by just pressing the caps lock?

also do the vehicals have a damage model? i mean if i want to kill a car, do i aim for the pertrol tank? or will a certain ammount of shots on it blow it up? (ive seen the tyres get shot out)

thanks again guys :)

Water fills up instantly at the pumps, doing what you are doing, but in a lake, there is an inexplicable lag. And that lag varies by server. Go in the lake (not the ocean - that doesn't work anymore), up to your waist. No deeper, no shallower. Do the inventory right-click-water-bottle thing. He will eventually bend over and fill, and eventually you will hear the glug glug sound. Some servers are nice and snappy with this animation/interaction, some take about 10 seconds where you aren't sure if you are even in deep enough. Practice will get you there.

Mic: I forget what the default key is. Check that in keyboard settings. Regardless, you want to make sure you are on the correct voice channel first. The one you almost always want to be on is Direct. Never General unless you are trying to talk to people on the player-list pre-load screen.

Vehicles: i think there are certain places that do more damage. I am told that a 50 cal shot to the engine will certainly disable it in one shot, but I don't know if that means it fully kills the "ENGINE" parameter or just shanghei's the whole vehicle.

Mic - hold down capslocks to speak or double tap it to keep mic on and continue to speak without hands on capslock. But remember it's on and everyone nearby will hear what you're saying.

cheers, i guess im not really complaing about anything to generate any hate. :P

in fact the only thing that irks me is that the 'beans' logo uses the american spelling, rather than the one the UK adopted 4 years ago.

but i guess that might have already been discussed. :D

yeah, you can sort of see a mountain off in the distance and want to explore it, but come across so many things in-between, that you forget about what you originally wanted to do.

fingers crossed for the fallout mmo. :)

Concerning the mic hit . until it says direct communication down the bottom left. Then by default it's left caps lock I believe.

Read some guides, learn the tactics. Go on lowpop servers until you get geared up then go on highpop servers and bandit hunt/become a bandit.

Have some fun, don't get frustrated when you die and you'll be fine.

The first few days are by far the best for the survival side of things, it's never quite the same after that. However it evolves into another beast altogether, with meeting folk, teaming up and repairing cars and helis. Then there's base building, base looting and pvp, it sucks up your life like no other game. I've been in a good three months now and it's still bags of fun.
