Why don't more players play like this?

Recommended Posts

So I got on Dayz after logging off last night finding god like loot off of two corpses and a car on my way from Cherno to the NW Airstrip. Like many, I grew tired of trying to be the nice guy and just became a bandit. When I logged in, I scanned the airstrip from the southern field where the strip ends, only to see no zombies nor any players. I grew tired of waiting and decided to check the southern barracks. Despite me being 99 percent sure that no one was there, I still took precaution and crawled to the barracks.

Along the way, I heard a faint sound of what I swore was a person talking. I was watching a video on my laptop, (while I was playing on my desktop) and I was wearing headphones for the game so I didn't know what was coming from which, so I paused the video and I listened in game. A man was calling out to me saying: "Stop moving or I'll shoot." Or something along that lines. Despite having I mic, I wasn't sure if the man was talking to me or someone else, being oblivious to me, so I decided to stop, and see if his words would change, if he kept saying stop then it's not me that's in his sights. And if not, then I might be in trouble. Moving my character's head to my left toward the sound I saw what looked like a crouching body aiming a weapon toward me, he had a ghillie suit so he blended into the leaves on the trees behind him, so I wasn't even sure if he was even there. The next thing he commanded me to do was to drop my weapons, clearly I was in not position to resist, so I went into my menu and dropped my weapons, which was a M4 CCO SD and a Revolver. I had a AS50 in my backpack, but I decided to wait to see if he would tell me to do that too, rather than just doing it.

Next he said that he was walking over, and told me to stand still. Looking at him, I saw that he himself had a AS50, and did have a Ghillie suit on. His actions was the first I had ever seen in this game, and I questioned many things; Why didn't he shoot me? What is he going to do? I was honestly confused by his rare actions upon this situation. Mostly if someone sees me they just shoot me, not giving it a second thought as far as I know. So what drove this man to do other wise?

Despite not shooting me on site, he wasn't being completely friendly, telling me to step away from my dropped weapons. I did so and watched him walk closer to me. When he got to me, he first looked at my weapons, believe it or not, he didn't take anything, he just looked over to me and asked me a few questions. I can't remember them exactly, but one was what I was doing. I told him I was looking over the airfield, and when I saw that no one was here, I decided to loot. He said that he was watching me crawling over. I guess he assumed that I was friendly, and let me get back to my weapons. Then after I got them, he let me go to the barracks, but he wanted to tag along, staying behind me, making sure I don't do anything.

At this point I could have tried to kill him, a part of me wanted to, but the kindness in me made me not do it. He gave me a chance, not just shooting me, leaving me with a anticlimactic end to my characters life, so why should I? Besides, I was around 6000 blood, and maybe this guy had things I could use without drawing blood, no one needed to die, and he understood that, we could help each other, go farther than we could ever go on our own. Instead of attacking each other like mindless bandits, not thinking before we act, we handled this situation calmly and quietly. This has never happened to me before, and the experience, although rather not as eventful as a shootout, seemed to hold a stronger affect on me.

So as I went into the barracks, which strangely did not spawn any zombies, he stayed outside to get water from the pump. Now if I was the kind of guy to attack him at this situation, this would have been a horrible idea. Unless he lied and instead was watching me, like a test to see if I was truly friendly to him, I didn't look outside because I had no interest in doing so, so I'm not sure if he was doing what he said. When I came back out, he asked me if I needed any medical attention, or if I needed ammo that he could spare. I asked if he had a blood bag, and he kindly gave me a transfusion.

Now was the time, better than any other to attack. He was completely vulnerable, in the act of healing me, I could aim my gun and put a single bullet in to his head, taking his life easily. but like I said before, why? Even if I didn't have rangefinders, NVGs, or other things he might have, would it really be worth throwing away the chance to not only have someone who could help me over come obstacles that I may never be able to accomplish on my own, but to also have another friend in this gaming community? I thought of it this way. Either kill him, and have short term advantages that would most likely go away as soon as I die, or possibly have not only long term advantages that I may benefit after I die ten times folded, and have someone to just have fun with? I took the latter, and let him finish, not stabbing him in the back.

School was starting soon, and I had to go, I told him I had to do so, and that I would like to play with him later. He gave me his (steam name?) and I logged off. I was unable to find his account, I found an account with his name, but I could not add him. I just hope that he is reading this.

IAmJayJayy, if you are reading this, thank you for giving me a chance, for doing things different, and inspiring me to do the same with others. And also, send me a message so I can give you my steam name.

TL;DR

Read the story or don't post, I don't care if this is too long for you.

He was obviously a experienced player.

I try to approach people like that sometimes, but the mainproblem is usually, they cant follow simple orders like "Dont turn around and drop the gun". They usualy start looking for where the sounds was comming from, and look straight at you waiting to shoot or like mentioned, just loggin off.

Story like this usually only happens if it includes two experienced players. Otherwise it will end in someone dying.

People just dont know how the game should be played in my oppinion.

The game has no way that it "should" be played, that is the beauty of it.

I'm 99% sure that he was a scripter. That would explain the odd situation. Legit players in ghillie suits with AS50s don't go to the NW airfeild to make friends, nor do they wander up to players...within shooting (or direct comm range). Ghillie suit AS50 is common hacker loadout, and the fact that his actions were suspicious (and the fact that he wanted to tag along, even though he had no reason to believe you wouldn't kill him) legit players wouldn't waste a trip to the airfield and all that gear...on something stupid like that. He probably gave you ample opportunities to shoot at him as a test, it's probably the reason you stayed alive.

And this is where you're wrong. Anonymity makes assholes out of everyone. Some people want to play this game like it's the real apocalypse One life and that's all we have. In the real world, you wouldn't shoot someone unless you had to, especially if they have a .50 Cal sniper rifle pointed between your eyes and you can't see them. Of course it isn't true because it's a videogame, but it could be that way. The only reason it's not is because this game would never make it on the market or be as popular as it is. Bandits only exist because of the anonymity that on the internet, no one knows who you are. I give everyone a chance because I want to take DayZ back to what it was before everyone was Kill on Sight mentality. When most people worked together to create a better life for themselves in a difficult game.

Skyhawk is right on the money. Introduce anonymity, and anyone with self esteem issues becomes instant asshole. Unfortunately, that causes the nice people to become more wary of others, and after getting killed a few dozen times over nothing, they decide "If you can't beat them, join them", and also become murderous sociopaths. And that's where Day Z is today.

Both players showed great courage in this interaction. Thumbs up.

Shoot on sight is the easy way out most often adopted by pussies. Try talking to other players. It takes guts.

I usually try to get a person to drop their weapon if not a bandit, ghille, or camo outfit. Ive even taken their ammo clips and left them at far hangers.....

Some people just have to pull their trigger to feel good. I actually have more fun trackin people unnoticed....

Ghillie Suit AS50 is an exact hacker loadout, when you open up your hacker gui (Public Items) one of the selective loadouts are Sniper and that's the loadout you have; A Ghillie Suit and an AS50.

I have been playing this game since Friday, so far I have mostly encountered great players like you guys all like to see in this game!

First awesome encounter was with 3 bandits.. Instead of just shooting me, they used Voicechat and told me they just wanted to talk (they were still far away) I started running and was screaming and cursing at them trough the voicechat (roleplaying not out of anger), anyway they came at me and told me they just wanted my painkillers.. Since they were robbing me and not just trading something for my stuff I decided to swing at them with my hatchet.. It was quite fun, they shot me and I gave a scream of pain.

Second awesome encounter was in a small city.. I was crawling into the city and suddenly someone on direct voicechat told me to Freeze! and not move! I did what this person said.. He then showed himself, comming from the bushes wearing a camosuit. We spoke and he offered me to help me find a gun in the city if I would give him a bloodtransfusion. So we agreed on this trade, he kept this word and so did I. Sadly the server was restarted 15 minutes after, so I lost a nice companion.

Beans!

This mentality produces much more interesting bandits. When you spot a player, instead of shooting at your first chance take a moment to delve into your imagination, exercise a little creativity, and see what happens. You might be surprised at the results. Now I'm not saying you shouldn't kill people for their loot or kill people because your scared because in DayZ, lets face it, that's just the way it goes sometimes.

Shit you can even kill people for the sport/ fun of it, I don't discourage that. But please, for the games sake, for your sake, for the communities sake, make it interesting! Even if you only do this in 2 of 10 encounters with players due to circumstances it will make DayZ an even better diverse experience. It'll probably make you a better player too, who knows, <--- thats the fun of it.

"Sandbox" games are a thinking mans game. Lets see what we can create, yeah?

I <3 Bandits/Carebears! Without each other what would we do?
