That's not true. I'm on day 221 and I certainly played at least 1 hour in 150 or more of those. I certainly don't do exciting things like raiding the NWAF on a daily basis, but I also don't sit in a corner all the time. Private hives contributed a lot, since I can use them for more exciting and risky gameplay if I get bored, but I enjoy just being alive for as long as I can on the official. 1. The obvious, I don't play crowded servers, and if there are more than 10 players I am extra careful. Your chances of getting killed increase dramatically on servers with more than 10 players. Also, hackers intending to do anything silly to kill all players often target crowded servers. 2. Also obvious, I don't go to big cities, and when I need to go into towns, I do it during the night and avoid buildings with a single entrance, like churches and the dark wooden houses. I usually only go into cities and towns when I need a new tent or blood bags. 3. I avoid making noises as much as I can, even silenced weapons, since they can be heard pretty well. Vehicles are an obvious no-no. 4. I got all my military gear and ammo from deer stands. Sounds boring, but I have a route where I can go to about a dozen of them within 1 hour while avoiding open fields. 5. I avoid making enemies. That sounds silly, considering most bandits will kill you for no reason at all, but it's a lot easier to stay alive if you're not a jerk. I don't kill players unless I really have to, I don't steal cars or stuff from tents, I don't go for loot someone has just fought for, like heli crashes. Yes, Chernarus is big, there are many servers, and without labels people are unlikely to go hunting you for revenge, but I've seen more than once someone who just got killed resorting to hacks to do that. 6. I realized that almost every single time I died, it was because I joined a team that decided to do something stupid, like going after a rival team or raiding the NWAF, and I was like, "ok, I think it's too risky, but let's do it". Since I'm focused on survival, I only play solo now, and I'm very, very careful when I help someone. That means stripping myself of gear that might tempt them, asking them to put their gun away before they can see me (and I really mean away, in a backpack or on the floor, not just putting it down). Finally, I think a lot before doing anything, and I think that's part of the joy of playing DayZ. A lot of it happens in your head. Yesterday I heard silenced shots and went prone, while looking around for the shooter. I noticed a heli crash after crawling for a while and figured it was someone clearing the zombies. The guy then opened fire with an M14 on the zombies a few meters away, completely careless, and I gave it a lot of thought if I should kill him or not. I hailed him, while very well hidden, and when I realized he was a bandit, moved away and ignored the heli crash completely. I still think I should've killed him, but I just got the hero skin.

The Shack - a different kind of Taviana server.
CitizenIosef` replied to CitizenIosef`'s topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Received and replied. Nice to see you on this morning/early afternoon! In other news, we're working on some new vehicles and kit - beyond what we JUST added. Experimentation yielded some additional weapons/vehicles that are usable: Weapons: (note that all weapons seem to be functioning perfectly at this time) The missing Camo G36s/MG36, The VSS Vintorez suppressed special purpose rifle, Most of the SCAR family of weapons(both H and L, or Mk16 and Mk17 alternatively), M32 six-shot 40mm grenade launcher(HE, multiple flare colors, multiple smoke colors), Metis AT-13 SACLOS wire-guided anti-armor launcher, M47 Dragon SACLOS wire-guided anti-armor launcher, NLAW Fire and Forget targeting or 'dumb fire' anti-armor launcher. (I feel like I'm forgetting something here...) On the vehicle front, we've found the following vehicles to be working. HMMWV with TOW launcher(seems to be working perfectly), HMMWV CROWS with Mk19(seems to be working acceptably), HMMWV CROWS with M2(M2 does not seem to be functioning, other functions are acceptable), MLRS tracked artillery system(seems to be working perfectly), Stryker MGS(seems to be working perfectly), LAV-25(seems to be working perfectly), M1A1 and M1A2 TUSK Main Battle Tanks(seems to be working perfectly) T-90 Main Battle Tank(seems to be working perfectly) Some of the BTR-type vehicles came in as well, but they may be suffering issues. Some of the Bradley variants came in as well, but may be suffering issues. On the aircraft front, it was rather hilarious. A-10, KA-52, SU-39, AV-8 Harrier, MH-60 Knighthawk, AW-159 Wildcat(Let's just call it a Lynx and call it a day), SU-34, I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Needless to say, some(most?) of these vehicles are wildly unbalanced for our type of gameplay, but we'll give them all a fair shake in stage one testing. We're fairly certain that the individual weapons will make it in - yes, even the launchers. We definitely need an anti-armor solution available to players, and some guided ordinance would definitely knock the Mi-17 down a few pegs. Some may make the argument that anti-armor assets aren't required at The Shack, but remember that Taviana 2.1 may bring us the BRDM-2, which will almost certainly require greater levels of firepower to bring down than we currently employ. So, what do you think? We're always open to feedback, and would love some on this topic. -

DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
Zombie Jesus replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
Man you guys all play on some terrible private hives if admin abuse is really that prevalent, search around for a good private hive I can even think of several posters in here who have a great private hive in their signature where you would never be banned for killing an admin legit (Balota Buddies a great set of private servers). The one issue I have with the idea that modding of the mod is bad is that it has sustained this mod for quite some time. If I was left with only vanilla Chernarus with zero modification I would not play nearly as much as I currently play. I had a ton of fun on vanilla DayZ but playing only that since late May would burn me out completely on that map and that experience, the variety of maps has added value to DayZ that continues to draw people into the game. Even a few slight modifications can add so much to these servers, add some barracks around the map to make more than one point of interest and some extra vehicles to fix up. If the server is healthy having the minimum amount of vehicles usually means there are no vehicles to be found, adding a few extra seems like a realistic addition to gameplay (not the servers with 500 vehicles all fully repaired). Not a huge fan of starting gear but I will say I enjoy a few modifications to the server that add to the environment. -

New server in the US (east coast) looking for inhabitants. Great place for new players to learn the game and get some friendly help. We have a few lone wolf players and no clans to worry about yet. Vanilla DayZ! Start with a bandage, painkillers and flashlight! Friendly and helpful admin. Might help you locate a specific vehicle, offer rides, offer medical assistance and they may even hook you up with a tent if you want to stay over but can't locate one yourself. Just don't ask for something to shoot them with. ;) 30+ vehicles in various condition. 3rd person:on | Cross hairs:on | Tracers:off | Nameplates:off | Death messages:on 24/7 daylight atm, subject to change. Debug monitor is on.. Side chat is enabled but using voice in side will not be tolerated for long. No stupid "not part of the game" rulez here. Play your way! DayZChernarus - (1.7.5.1/101480) [VETERAN CH:ON][GMT-12] Private Hive - Lost for DayZ | DayZ.ST IP: 173.192.200.126:3119 -
You can change between them but any time you change hives your server will be wiped back to defaults. The private hive gives you more control over the server - you can spawn vehicles, edit players' inventories, restore database backups, FTP, edit your server files and have full access to your database, among other things. Frankly, DayZ Anti-hax is absolutely useless at catching hackers. It does no better than properly configured BattlEye filters. BEC is just a way for you to define multiple admins. We have Takistan DayZ but do not offer wasteland, and won't any time soon.

DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
tiresomehoopla replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I took the time to look around on dayz commander. You guys are right. They are all 24/7 daylight servers, have 1000+ vehicles, or spawn you with ak-74's. The official hive servers, almost 0 players on most. I tried out DayZ+, I think it's brilliant. So far dayz+ is the only place i've been able to find true dayz servers on. (one...) -

For Standalone - Dynamic minefields.
TheBambiAvenger replied to [email protected]'s topic in DayZ Mod Suggestions
As much as random spawn fields would be stupid, static fields would just be marked on maps like dayzdb's maps and nobody would even come near, making it utterly useless. Maybe have a player spawn radius so it cant spawn within x meters of you (and possibly any vehicles/tents you place), and the longer you are logged out the smaller the radius gets. -

Yesterday I put in a coyote backpack 2 rangefinder, 2 nvg, 2 gps, 2 watchs, 2 compasses and 2 axes, 12 in total. Had no problem doing it. Trully tools applies as weapons inside tents and vehicles, but I dont think this happens with backpacks. -
I regret to inform you this, but I have just found that my computer won't be fixed by this weekend, so I cannot run the meeting. Normally I would just get someone to take my place, but several other "members" couldn't do it this weekend either, so we are going to reschedule the trails to next weekend. I am deeply sorry for any inconvenience this has caused you. EDIT: If you are longing to do anything for the team in advance, we could always use more medical supplies (blood bags, morphine, epi-pens, etc.), weapons, and coyote and alice backpacks, and vehicles for team transportation. None of this is required but it could always help. With the meeting getting pushed back to next week, I am open to any maps you wish to play, the current vote is: Chernarus 6, Taviana 3. So it looks like we will play Taviana now, unless more people vote. I don't have any gear on taviana (or a hero skin) so i'll try to get both of those next week (gotta bandage some bambi's) :P

DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
azrael72 replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I prefer to spawn without a weapon of any kind, but I don't get all indignant and huff and puff about 'DayZ purity' when I pick a server that gives you starter weapon or any kind of other kit. There have been times I've dropped all starter kit, even on official servers, to play purely from scratch. There have been times I've kept my starter AK(some Celle server) and ran around PVP'ing with the rest of the nutters. I do miss the nights though. The group I play with... the Fogeyz... have 3 servers running now on daylight only. Can't get people on otherwise and it's tough when our group includes people from Europe and the US. I've been playing since the middle of May 2012, so I've been able to experience DayZ in its earliest incarnations. I like the mods of the mod that have come out. I applaud the creativity and enjoy their creations as much as I enjoy the team Rocket creation. As I understood it, originally Rocket wanted DayZ stay confined on official servers in order to have one place to collect the data he needed. I don't recall reading that he had any particular beef with modders...considering he is one. I've been thinking about the story though. In what state was the world prior to washing up on a beach in Chernarus? Did the entire apocalypse occur while I was floating lifeless in the ocean, leaving 50 or less humans and only a handfull of working vehicles on the island? In other words, what prior knowledge did i have about the state of the world? If I knew a virus was decimating the population prior to jumping in my escape boat I imagine I would have some kind of kit ready in a backpack including some kind of weapon, food, drink, bandages, navigating equipment. If my boat took damage and started going down I'd have likely grabbed it, before getting knocked out by the wreckage and ultimately washing up on the shore. No matter where you play you start with a backpack, so it makes sense in terms of the game world. Was I floating out there so long that military weaponry and war machines would be gone or degraded? Was I a soldier in civvies, maybe, on a warship that went down? If so i'd definitely have guns and nav in my pack. Anyway, that's how I approach the loadouts and loot available on various servers. They just have a different story to tell. -
DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
[email protected] replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
It was a legit question, why do you seem butthurt and aggressive ? I admit there's no zombie, but you put emphasis on PvP, if you want early access to gear, vehicles and PvP, I suggest you actually try Wasteland as an Indie, it quite fits your perspective of Dayz. Also there's a difference between Private hives (often whitelisted) meant for more security, and Private hives with custom settings that takes a different path from the DayZ meta. -
Hey guys, Played some DayZ on the AWA private hive today and wanted to share what happened. I warn you, it's going to be long and I'm going to be as thorough as I can, because I REALLY enjoyed that session! After my last session on AWA my character ended up being north of Cherno, had no gun whatsoever, only a can of pasta, and a water bottle inside an Assault backpack. I decided to play a bit solo and checked some barns near Cherno, but unfortunately no loot spawned, Without a map, compass or any of the essentials (matches, hatchet, knife etc.) I headed up north to explore the woods, using the DayZDB map to recognize where I am. As I entered villages/towns, I only found a Crossbow with 1 bolt, making me feel really unlucky. I made my way up to Novy Sobor when my drink gauge began flashing and I realized I had to enter the city to fill my bottle up. I sneaked on a hill nearby and had a look on the city, when I take notice of zombies inside the city definitely not being spawned by me. I hesitated but ultimately decided to go for it since I would die of thirst anyway. Although I heard some Makarov and Enfield shots, I kept my calm and got into the Church, where I finally felt a bit safer after finding a Lee Enfield inside. Now that I was done fixing my drink gauge, I made a dash to the north, escaping Novy Sobor without a scratch on me. Seeing as I didn't even have a real 'goal' for my journey, I looted as many Deer Stands as I could. At that point my friend logged into the server. He was in Krasnostav, a few kilometers north of me. We decided to run to each other and meet up eventually. One of the Deer Stands had an AKM, and as I was picking it up near Dubrovka, I heard an SUV on the road near it. I couldn't see it because of the woods, but I could tell it was going north. About a minute or two after, my friend sees the SUV, driven by a ghillie suit guy, and decides to take a shot at him before being shot, not knowing if he was friendly or a bandit. He decided not to loot the body, and went into the vehicle. That very second, a guy began spamming the SUV with stanag rounds, damaging some of the vehicle parts but not even scratching my friend, and he comes to pick me up. Good thing the SUV drives REALLY fast both off-road and on-road. We drive north with no real aim when we spot, unbelievably, a totally fixed and semi-fueled (1/4) Huey, all green and ready to go. We hide the SUV and take the chopper to a ride around the northern part of Chernarus. After a few minutes we realized we had to land somewhere to refuel. Landing at west of Zelenogorsk, Pustoshka, Vybor, Lopatino and Orlovets didn't work well for us, as people kept shooting at us with stanag rounds, DMRs and whatnot -- mind you, that was AWA, the number of players was around 60! I told my friend we should try our luck at the North East Airfield, and after inspecting it from above, it seemed safe. My friend landed the chopper and I dashed to the fuel tank to refuel some Jerrycans. Luckily enough, and at that point we didn't realize how lucky that was, a zombie hit my friend inside the chopper thanks to the latest update. He began bleeding, so he went out of the chopper as well, turning its engine off as a result. I hear something in the back and as I turn around my jaw completely dropped in fear as I saw another Huey flying directly towards us, probably wanting to refuel as well. Now, my guess is that the Huey operators did not shoot at us because they thought I was alone out there, fueling my own chopper hence why it was turned off. It was a great opportunity for them to get another Huey, they thought. I yell to my friend to get into the chopper as soon as possible and take off. As we did it, the other Huey, of course, began shooting at us. I was at the gunner seat and returned fire as my friend tried some evasive maneuvers. The gunner of the other chopper managed to hit me a time or two, making me bleed with about 3000 blood left, but I manage to shoot down their rotor and the other Huey dives into the ground, making some nice fireworks and a very satisfying explosion :D. The other guys say they couldn't believe what a lucky shot that was. Yeah right. We decide to go hide the Huey, and my friend picked a very nice spot to do it, however the terrain was too sloppy and the heli began sliding down a hill. Trying to save it, he jumped into the pilot seat and tried to take off. Some bug occurred and the heli was stuck to the ground, gaining speed but not altitude. Out of instinct he ejects and gets killed while the chopper exploded into oblivion :(. I run back to the SUV, drive it to my friends' body, put his stuff inside the vehicle and drive to pick him up at Kamenka. To push our 'luck' even more, we then headed off to the North West Airfield, the infamous capital of Chernarus and the final destination for many survivors. :D Someone in the side channel mentioned stealing a car at the NWAF but after a few circles on the airstrip, we realize it's rather safe and he drops me off at the South barracks, and I begin to loot. I end up finding an M24 with 2 mags and my favorite side-arm besides the M9 SD, the PDW. My friend takes the sniper and I take the side-arm. After the successful loot we picked up another friend of ours at the NEAF, and wanted to investigate the hills overlooking the airfield, so we drove around when I heard the sound of Makarov bullets and some sniper weapon. We drive around the hill, trying to catch any kind of movement there to no avail. But somewhere on that hill, I notice a Pickup truck hidden behind 2 pine trees. One friend stayed in the car, the other one went out with me to cover me as I investigate the car. I find some SVD rounds making me suspect it was the vehicle of the sniper on the hill. Then I realize that I hear flies VERY VERY close to me, I immediately prone and to my left, I see a blown up UAZ with the body next to it. I roll over, hoping no one sees me, and check the loot. British Assault backpack, blood bags, PDW mags, food, drinks, and to top it all, a DMR with 2 mags. :D We get away from the NEAF to finish our adventures for the day, and honestly that was one of the most amazing chain of events I had on a server like AWA. I am also excited since I know that on my next session I am going to get my well deserved Hero skin. :] Thank you all for reading, hoped you enjoyed it as I enjoyed writing it! As a bonus I added a nice desync screenshot that I had to take. xD TL;DR: Survived alone. Heli fight. NWAF & NEAF trips. Vehicles. Epic loot. Hero skin next time. :D

Tents disappear on server restart
K9us replied to Assassin8813's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
We've experienced the same thing on a private hive since they applied 1.7.5.1. Also, the tents we pitched before the patch keeps resetting at every server restart to the content it had before the patch. I.e. we now basically have an unlimited supply of blood bags, NVGs, SVDs, 240s, etc etc. Anything we put in the tents now just disappears after restart. Completely ruins the gameplay for us who play with a squad and actually maintain basecamps around the map. We have had to resort to putting stuff in vehicles. -

DayZ: Most Private Hives Are Not Real DayZ
[email protected] replied to DemonGroover's topic in DayZ Mod General Discussion
I'm thinking the same, and it won't be those who don't like the heavily modded DayZ because the standalone will not be moddable. You can bet there won't be fully repaired vehicles on every corner of the map or 100 helis around. It's not really about PvP itself. As far as I can tell, the issue seems to be that people believe anything other than shooting stuff is "a huge waste of time". I don't see it that way at all. In fact, fixing a car taking an hour or so just makes it more satisfying in the end. Searching for parts makes me check out areas and buildings that otherwise I wouldn't bother with. And even if I die, or don't manage to find all the parts, or someone shoots me and steals my car after all the "hard work", I still don't see it as a waste of time because I had fun doing it. Similar with the starting weapon argument. If I run into Elektro unarmed, I know there is a good chance I will die. So what, it's not like big cities are the only places where you can find a weapon. On the contrary, spawning in Kamenka and hitting those deer stands up north is quickly becoming my favorite spawning location. When i join a private server and spawn with a DMR, NVGs, M9SD and a fully repaired ATV next to me, more often than not I'll just go and search for some PvP action because there is not much left to do. Even if I die, it doesn't really matter. -

About to set up my own private-hive server, need a hand.
opjohnny replied to opjohnny's topic in Mod Servers & Private Hives
Thank you so much for your reply. :) My entire goal with the server is to offer a 'vanilla' DayZ experience but make more vehicles spawn in certain areas(perhaps along the coast), allow users to build bases with that build script I linked, and of course be on a private hive. I don't want to edit or bring in any items that aren't normally available as this just seems to complicate and/or break things. I want to keep it as simple as possible to keep everything running as smoothly as possible for the people that decide to play on my server. I run a gaming community so I can appoint X amount of my staff to admin that server. As far as the mechanics of it go(setup, maintenance, tweaks, etc), I'll be taking care of that but do have another person in my staff that I could trust with those tasks as well. The server pack I linked appears to be the 'easy mode' bliss server install/setup which helps a bunch, plus those guys have released a few tutorial vids on the whole install and setup process so I have those at my disposal as well.
