So this is how you stop server hoppers/farmers

He's suggesting it to stop server hoppers for loot, not server hoppers for ghosting. Read the post.
  2. alcatraz968

So this is how you stop server hoppers/farmers

How does this stop ghosting??? And Dayz currently spawns all loot at the start of the mission.
  3. MrTesla

Idea to stop farming on emty server

So can someone explain why loot farming on an empty server needs to be stopped? Is it really an issue? I know it happens, but it doesn't really impact anyone. They can't even horde the loot without any storage yet. So if someone wants to avoid other players and go where there's more likely to be loot, why shouldn't they? I understand the problems with things like ghosting and combat logging, but this seems like you're making a big deal out of nothing.

    This community....(kos complaint)

OP. BlessedSyn. Save yourself the time going through these kinds of threads because they basically always turn into a thread full of (semi-)witty comments, people in favor of KOS and people who are not. And some "discussion" (sometimes civil, sometimes or often not so much as possible) in between the groups. History repeats itself. Fact is: There is no set rule on how to play the game. The main goal is "survive" and the motto or so is "It's your story". Conclusion: That also means that "KOS" is not the main way to game is supposed to be played. Nor is "being friendly to all no matter what". It is an option and any player decides whether to shoot, establish communications or stay in cover / hidden if the situation warrants it. Anything that works, is possible, in the game is legit, minus 'hacking' and cheating. I count "ghosting" among that. Suggestion: OP or anyone: If you feel that servers you are on have a general KOS mentality among the players, find a group to roll with that tries to assist other players. I could even point you to a specific one if you like, as I'm part of one. My personal experience tells me there's a vast difference between playing as loner, always on edge, perhaps paranoid and playing in a team or "army" so to speak that's kinda friendly, not a bandit group. Unless in major combat or war between groups, your life expectancy rises greatly. And you have some other people watch your back while you watch theirs. It's logic at work: One can only do so much. Strength in quantity but also quality, if possible.

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

If you mean this post: http://forums.dayzgame.com/index.php?/topic/155643-why-is-this-not-in-the-game-yet/ I can explain. People agree with you that hopping/ghosting is bad. However, you come with a solution, and some people don't like this solution. This is not fanboy, I don't like your idea either. Also, not only do you provide your solution as THE solution, you think it is should be implemented as fast as possible, which is quite weird to do in an alpha. The goal is developping the game in the long run, not give players a more enjoyable experience in the short term (however, with these release models it is usually a combination of the two). Also, you started thread #100 or so about it. Use the search and merge your point with another thread. If you run into a specific problem twice, chances are you are not the only one experiencing them, so search!

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

The problem is that at this moment, several features affecting ghosting/hopping mentality still are not fully functional, most notable the loot respawns. I hope it will reduce ghosting/hopping. I played DayZ with a logout timer and to be honest, I really liked it. But before we can think about such mechanics, the current have to be working to fully assess the situation.
  7. If you didn't understand where i came from there, it's the combat logging, server hopping and ghosting that people are exploiting
  8. hallgeirbakken

    Possible hacker

I have experienced some heavy ghosting; resulting in other players disappering/getting stuck in front of me or me disappering from other players (been told so by a friend I play with). That might be a plausible solution.

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the timer will discourage some players. But there will always be a hardcore group of players continue to exploit this advantage until it's actually removed from the game. If you want a current example, I'd suggest playing ARMA 3 : Breaking Point. They currently have this timer system in place, and while it does help prevent ghosting. People will still continue to server hop to the various military bases for gear since there is a chance that many of the bases have never been touched. But your going to regret the timer system quickly once the game allows vehicles to the game, people will have no problem in server hopping to steal vehicles. * 30 - 60 min means nothing to a group of which can steal a vehicle. Or once storage tents will be added to the game, people will just continue to server hop till they discover a someones encampment on the borders of the map. Locking the character to the server forces people to travel, if my base was discovered by someone who traveled allot of distance on that specific server then I would say that is fair. But if my base was discovered by a player that is just server hopping, then I would utilize the same cheap tactic in finding someones base as-well.

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

Keep wishing, there is a reason that the private servers began to thrive over the public hive in the classic mod. * Better security - White-listed communities * Character locked servers - No more server hopping, no more ghosting. Unless the private hive has that option available. Of course as time progressed the private server began to spoil the community, but it still did better than the public hive. The timer will not the fix the problem, it's just slowing down the problem instead of just fixing it.

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

A logout timer is the correct way to combat ghosting, not server hopping for loot
  12. sobieski12

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

Keep in mind that traveling takes about 30 min to an hour. * What is the better choice in getting better gear, travel for a long time or just wait for a timer. Not to mention the simple advantage of server hopping is not only to get better loot on the ground but you can also ambush another group of players doing the exact same thing. As for rocket implementing a timer that long, I am not quite sure. So far from what I've heard he has said that there will be a 15 min timer. Locking a character to a server will fix both server hopping and ghosting of which are both doing more damage to this game than the various bugs.
  13. sobieski12

    Server hoppers: A renewable resource.

Actually the public hive as just been a source of various problems. * Server Hopping * Ghosting Are the two biggest problems that game currently faces. As for playing with your friends, the suggested idea in keeping your character locked to a specific server does nothing but make you start over on the beach. * Have you heard of the term, "Don't get attached to your gear".
  14. Every player starts with a kit to make a small campfire (different from regular campfire) you can't cook with this campfire, but both campfires allow you to log out. Otherwise you cannot exit the game until you have your small campfire or regular campfire up. Any player can log out next to a lit campfire. When you light a campfire, it makes a fireplace sound so everyone knows you're attempting to log out. Then have a 30 second timer. So, you're in a firefight in a city. you corner a guy into a house. you hear the campfire lit. now you know he's either faking it or logging out within 30 seconds. otherwise you don't have to push the envelope and you know he's still in there. Tada. As for server hopping just make it to where if they log out they spawn outside the city in a ring like other posters have suggested. This also prevents ghosting so people can't spawn in behind a cleared building and surprise you thus ruining any tactical advantage a group has in clearing an area. The only hiccup to this small fire is how do you get it back in your inventory if you log out and appear away from the campfire? I'm sure a developer could get around this in a number of ways, but one of them would be to have it as a button in game that doesn't even take up any spaces for a lighter/wood and just automatically is the defacto "log out" button.

    Dayz wishlist

I realize the game is in alpha, and some of these features are going to be implemented, but mostly it's just a wishlist of features. 1. A 30 second timer on logging out if within X distance from another player, cannot log out while bleeding, broken leg or handcuffed, etc etc. While i'm no KoS guy i'm not against shooting someone who threatens me, like when i chat in comms "friendly" and the guy pulls an axe or gun out, I shoot him, and he combat logs, or tries to ghost, etc etc, of course most of the community would enjoy a feature that prevents ghosting/combat logging, and so would I, that's why it's on my wishlist. 2. A class system, I just find it funny how everyone knows how to mend a broken leg, or fly a helicopter(if they release them in standalone), drive a bus or perform blood transfusions, while I can actually do without, it seems like a fun idea. Classes like doctor, pilot, cook, doomsday prepper, etc 3. lots of guns, a variety would be awesome, even if they aren't really needed, yeah sure X rifle is similar to Y rifle, but hey, it's just nice to see them both there, totally capable of being modified and all(maybe with different attachments). 4. More attachments, man i love that there are like 5 different types of clips for one gun, it just adds that variety you and guy X could both have the same gun, but completely modded for different purposes, it just tickles me, I want more added. 5.Some sort of system to mark friendlies, currently, this can actually be done with the in game clothing options, have everyone friendly wear hoxton mask or something, but maybe another way like in epoch? 6.More zombies, it's a shame when I run through cherno only to be chased by 3 total zombies, I know they're working on this, so I'd like to see the increase soon 7.Zombies have spectral powers removes, can no longer walk through walls, enough said 8.Animations to force players to do things, like kicking them onto the ground from the back after being tied up, or hitting them with the butt of your gun, these kinds of things add more to the role-play, you capture a bandit who was attacking your team and you force him to tell you the location of his base, etc. 9.A really cool reward for being a hero, A lot of people ask for bandits to be punished, nope don't do it, instead reward people for healing others, giving transfusions, etc, with something cool, idk what, but it should be cool. 10. (saw this on another thread) grow-able beards! After a character has survived long enough without shaving, he gets starts getting a survivors beard! 11.While painkillers can calm you down from the shakes, I think there should be luxury items lieing around as well, like cigarettes, that do the same thing, chocolate and spices and stuff. these items can have positive effects on player characters, like increased HP regen or slight movement speed, or steady the shakies, just an idea to have valuable resources maybe worthy of banditing? 12. Some way to store loot, like tents or chests or a base of some kind, I think bandits would be less likely to kill, and more likely to stalk and follow, then eventually rob you if you had a base with all the good loot! also it would help with the random dieing that happens sometimes 13. more persistent bodies, currently bodies disappear after a short period of time, but loot sticks around for ever as far as i'm aware, so maybe if the body vanishes then loot just drops to the floor? 14. some reason to play on night servers, I can actually tell what time of day it is on a server based on 4/40 or 39/40 15. A notebook where important info is listed, (players marked as friendlies or bloodtype, event locations, etc) 16. I know we're getting 'em but still, vehicles man, vehicles I understand that some of these will be actual features, but this is sort of my current dayz wishlist, the game is great, i know it's in alpha, but that's what i want to see as we approach release. I'm also interested in what other people want to see in game?
  16. desryachri

This is not what I hoped DayZ would be

Yep so true but this is because combat logging ghosting kos and lack of zombies and re spawning loot / zombies. Fix those the game will be very enjoyable. Did not add server hopping because re spawning loot will fix that.

    [Suggestion] Heart Monitor

Ok ive did a search and nothing SA specific has came up that relates to this idea. Having a heart rate monitor displayed on the hud could present itself as many functions and solve certain issues at the same time. The monitor could be shown in 3 stages and could represent any of the following:- Green Status Everythings fine, you are healthy, you are not in combat - logout possible. Orange Status You are in fear, you are sick, your adrenaline has risen, youve heard gunshots, you have spotted an enemy or infected. Logout not possible. This could have a 1 minute cooldown period to reach green status providing you do not enter red status. Red Status You are terrified, you are fleeing, you are wounded, You are in combat - Logout not possible. This could have a further 2 minute cooldown period to reach Orange status. This is kinda sketchy but if youve read this far you'll get my drift. This would prevent ghosting, combat logging, possibly KoS as it would then have you tied to the game for 3 mins. The mod had a similar go at this (not as elaborate) that didnt quite takeoff during my play days. Anyway share your views and bashing or contribute ideas to improve it.

Any ideas on fixing "Ghost Walking"?

i do really like this idea of Timers for joining servers after imidately leaving one it wont exactly 'fix' ghosting but it'll defo slow it down as well as at the same time reducing the amount of server hoppers
  19. Hey survivors, I was curious what things people were looking forward to the most of thought needed the most urgent attention from Rocket and his team. For me personally, the number 1 issue has to be security and exploits. Combat logging, server hopping and ghosting are pretty game-breaking. Not to mention the hacking that has already started. Sigh... PS: I see a lot of posts around reading something like "Why do the devs give us prettier rain when we still have bugs with ___X____!!!1! Rocket should stop all development on EVERYTHING else and fix this NAO!" I can tell you from what I know of software development is that there are more than one type of programmer/developer which specialised skill-sets. For example, you might have a 2d graphics guy that works on nothing but icons, a 3d guy that does modeling, sound guys, engine and netcode programmers etc. You can't just stop work on other things tell your entire team to start focusing on something else. So the point of this post is not to whine about what the team should and should not be doing, I am just curious as to what people are wanting. Hopefully with the crazy good sales (650,000 x $30 USD = 19.5mil and counting) , BIS can give rocket some more programmers to help speed up things, especially squashing all the bugs
  20. I'm worried that first person servers will end up being just like non-24/7 day servers at prime time... relatively empty. I don't mind playing at night at all... except EVERYONE piles into 24/7 day servers. And because I value playing with the maximum amount of people, I mostly ignore regular servers.. which ultimately is my decision but rather sucky that I'm more or less forced into gimmicky servers because people need their hand held constantly. "ALWAYS DAYLIGHT!" "3RD PERSON GHOSTING CAM!" and eventually "200+ VEHICLES!!!!" :/

Any ideas on fixing "Ghost Walking"?

combat timer, logout timer, AND residual avatar that sticks around for >30 seconds if a player, combat, or zed is/happens within x number of meters from the player fixes combat loggers That takes care of that issue Throw in a server specific 'location' timer, as mentioned 100 times on these forums and you fix ghosting... I don't like the idea of 'send 'em to the coast' if you log out. I for one don't want to spend 3-4 hours making my way up north, log to go to bed, and have to start in Kemenka the next evening.

Any ideas on fixing "Ghost Walking"?

Ghosting sucks big time. So does server hopping, and combat logging. But I do believe that the community is unanimous in our outcry to fix this, and I believe BI has stated they are working on a solution. Once these things are fixed, the game will get a lot more enjoyable.
  23. Zascha-Geriko

Any ideas on fixing "Ghost Walking"?

Well, while I am completely 100% in favor of doing something about Ghosting, I think all it's going to do is illustrate another really bad problem about the game. I'm not sure if you guys have noticed or not, but there are quite a few very frequently visited areas and buildings that only have one way in or one way out. So basically, it creates a choke point where the whole thing is just a stale mate. There's no way to exit without being killed, and there's no way to enter without being killed. Since there aren't things like grenades or flashbangs... there aren't many options. It boils down to poor level design. You should always have more than one entrance/exit. This is especially the case for Barracks and Prisons, but also for some of the houses, hospitals, firestations... pretty much everything. If there were other tactical options available, I would think that Ghosting wouldn't be as bad as it actually is now. Even still... people will exploit anything they can to gain an advantage. That being said - fix the Ghosting and similar issues. And after that - be prepared to do a pathing and level design on a large portion of the buildings.

    Server unique characters?

I'm wondering if in the release your characters will be specific to the server they are created on? Yhis to prevent the "ghosting" and server hoppers?
  25. Terpy (DayZ)

Silly KOSer (just one, not all of you)

I had a guy TRY to KoS me, then combat logged today. I was coming down the steps of the tech building / jail in the NE airfield and he was walking in the front door. He started hosing the building down with bullets while I aimed and put at least two in his chest. He quickly ducked back outside and combat logged. I couldn't care less about KoS'ers, I found the loot I have once, I'll certainly find it again. But combat loggers, they annoy me. Not because I can't loot ther dead body, I don't feel a sense of entitlement to their stuff, but because some times you don't actually know if they combat logged or not and you spend the next 15 minutes in tactical search & destroy mode, just to find out you've been wasting your time. I hate that, that's 15 minutes I could have used jogging to the next town. And now that all the n00bs have figured out ghosting, I move as soon as possible after each engagement.
