    We need a purpose.

Rocket replied in a previous thread about a separate issue entirely. However, the content of that post is relevant here. I'll paraphrase because I can't be bothered finding the actual post itself, but what he basically expressed was incredulity at the fact that gamers these days want everything spoon fed to them. Rules, motivation, purpose, items... The players want all of this stuff (especially rules and purpose) to be forced upon them. There is plenty to do in DayZ at the moment without resorting to killing other players for jollies. Build up a group of players who can police banditry. Or get that group of players together to take over a town for your own purposes (nefarious or benevolent... Or in between). Acquire vehicles and have drag races around courses marked in flares, bonus points if it involves going through a zombie infested town. Debug monitor is still up, go with some friends, give yourselves a time limit and see who out of you can kill the most zombies. Have a prize for the winner. For solo play, challenge yourself to see how many you can take down in a given time limit. Then go search for more ammo. Help other players who need it by offering services (carefully, of course). Go take the DayZ nut up mode challenge etc. etc. There is SO much to do in the mod, but it seems like a lot of people are only focusing on acquisition of gear or killing players. Call it a commentary on gaming society if you will, but I have to blame this on current generation content and the way gaming has evolved. "The End Game" is the only thing that seems to matter anymore, and I think a lot of players have lost sight of the journey to get there. You don't see level 1 gnome raids on hogger, or 40v40 paladins v shamans (as examples) anymore. People are too focused on getting their 'epic loots'. Is it fun? Sure, but it takes so much away from the spontaneity and creativity that gamers had years ago. Minecraft doesn't give you direction, or purpose. It gives you NOTHING, sets you in a world and tells you one simple thing: Survive. How you do that is up to you, but once you've locked down survival, you need to create your own purpose. The same goes for DayZ. Think outside the box. For the moment, these are the tools we have. They may be expanded in the future, and we may be given some developer created motivation or purpose, but it should not detract from player generated purpose and motivation. You have a big sandbox world out there, with plenty of tools at your disposal. Think creatively and have fun.

Things that need to be removed

Title :) 1. Corner-Eye scanning for players, vehicles, and animals. If you look on the side of your screen when there's a player (Green), vehicle(grey), or animal (grey) just outside of your field of view, there is a green/grey "Dot" about the size of a pinkie finger imprint. This can be used to "scan" for animals, vehicles, and even other players if you look hard enough. 2. Helicopters have a "radar" This radar is used to determine FoF and missile direction in ArmA2 OA. Because there are no AA missiles (right..? D:) in DayZ, and because you could just fly around the map and easily finding all the vehicles, this needs to be removed. Would make vehicle finding simple once you have a helicopter. 3. Super Military Weapons. Things like M249, M240's, M107's etc are pretty ridiculous and is like "easy mode". The rarest weapons should be CCO M4's/Acog M16's. These weapons' ammo is quite rare, yes. But this leads me to another point.. 4. Ammo "regenerates" after re-logging. Fire off all of your ammo in a magazine, except for 1 round. Reload. Do the same for all your magazines. Now rejoin the server. You have all your ammo back. If there is a way to fix this, this will allow people to not have infinite ammo after finding 4-5 mags. 5. Night Vision. I know people will cry about this being removed. Once you have night vision, the game is dramatically changed. You no longer need a flashlight, flares, chemlights, or anything. Anyone without nightvision, is prey to people with night vision at night time. Which, would make sense. However, night vision is fairly OP. It reduces the "fear" of night dramatically. 6. Leaderboards. I just want to say that I'm pro-PvP. I enjoy the tense aspect of PVP. Remove anything that has to do with getting kills. Keep the "Longest Survivors" and other interesting stats. I know a few people who only kill because leaderboard stats. Which doesn't really make any sense. ^^ Discuss!

    We need a purpose.

i disagree with adding missions, what i love about this is that you can make your own, i regularly go on rescue missions to help out people i know and trust, then we gear up at the airfield, get working vehicles etc..

Standardize Servers + Lock First-Person View

You can remove headbob in your Gameplay settings of ArmA. Just go to the Main Menu. 1st person only, would make finding cars and choppers just not worth it. There's too much scattered trash and obstacles, that having no 3rd person would make these death-traps. 1st person only on infantry, 3rd allowed on vehicles... that could work (like it does with PR). Regular is best difficulty IMHO to go with, as you can customise it anyway you want. Veteran and Expert have some settings you can't change. People just generally assume Regular is 'noob mode' but it depends if server admins have bothered to customise it (like they do on UO).

    The PvP Discussion Thread

I agree server hopping is one of the biggest problems with this mod right now, probably only fixable by removing cross-server persistence (It sounds like each server will have it's own database soon anyway). I still like the idea of a bullet-free zone (in or out) that is constructed in the same way that vehicles are repaired, by gathering and assembling certain items. Only persistent while it's maintained, not permanent and not affixed to any one certain area. Even bandits would be safe there, and others safe from them. Good place to barter for a blood transfusion, food, or that snazzy gucci weapon you've been after or just a place to meet up with others, without being worried about being shot doing it. Should help encourage grouping. Also a safe place to log off.

[VIDEO GUIDE] Installation & Tutorial (+BETA)

    - How to get vehicles up and running (what the drive-able vehicles look like, what they need, what those parts look like) - How to cook meat (what the animals look like, the tools you need) - What certain landmark buildings look like (hospitals, general stores) Those are things I would have liked to know first starting out or just something handy to have somewhere.

    Second-tier Metagame aka Special Challenges

As is most villages work like that, if you choose to stand your ground and kill a few zombies in a church for example with anything louder then a pistol you get an endless horde of zombies just funnelling into the doorway cause they keep re-spawning. right now zombies need a lower spawn rate, and I don't see any reason you'd need a tank or a mortar or even a plane considering it can only land in an airport anyway. right now finding, fixing and escaping with a car is hard enough and a helicopter well I have yet to see it done. The reason most are going for vehicles when in groups is so they can pick up recently killed players quicker or get to a loot-able area faster if it's a bit far. I admit you need something to do near the end game so there does need to be a few more 'military areas' with high tier loot and more zombies, but not endless zombies.
  9. orbital

    to spice up the game.

Vehicles can be a excellent base for supplies (seen in game already), if timed random spawns is 'easily' implemented, another option could be a convoy and slain soldiers in random towns.
  10. Take your backend database of player XY location snapshots saves and create a "traffic map". Actually it's a a save point density table if you don't use a GIS map. Find the chokepoints. A bit of maths involved. convert the savepoint density map to a graphics file and overlay it on top of the Chernarus map. Add statics of the first survivors (prior to Day 0 of the mod) on the fly escape camps. Abandoned and destroyed vehicles, garbage piles, makeshift defenses, corpses and other such things. Allow loot (and maybe zombies) to spawn at these abandoned camps. More complicated: Split the database into survivor and bandit, and do the same as above. Anyone who stays in proximity to predefined bandit zones for set time period loses humanity(sniper roosts in hills and surrounding cherno/elektro/airfields for example). Add more of those hung man and dead soldier statics. Anyone in predefined bandit zones has FreeTarget=True Anyone who stays in proximity to predefined survivor zones for set period of time gains humanity, though that might be bad game mechanics as bandits can exploit it. (optionally, but not really necessary) Convert Chernarus map to a GIS compatible map. Lots of work, you don't really need the map UI, the map makes it easier to visualise. Also would make converting mod to other maps easier in the future as you would have ability to quickly find places to add more statics. All of this work would be on the backend and offline, until you feel comfortable to add the new statics.
  11. When I was thinking about the problem with players murdering each other for no good reason in DayZ, it occured to me that the missing component is the value of life. Player characters aren't important for any reason if your playstyle doesn't necessitate grouping. Players themselves are no more valuable than the items on their corpse. With the addition of Roles and Information, this would change. A player's life in DayZ would have value. The idea for Roles is similar to perks or traits in other FPS and RPG games. Roles give players valuable abilities based on their imaginary past before the zombie apocalypse. Roles should be useful, but should not dictate the overall gameplay. There should be enough unique Roles so that no two players on a 50 person server would share them. Players do not get to pick Roles, they are automatically assigned when you spawn. Some example suggestions, keep in mind these are just examples and may apply to features that are not currently in-game: Character can pick locks Character can crack safes Character can salvage vehicles, making them require less parts to repair Character can interrogate other characters to get their information Character can reload cartridges (requires special items) I mentioned Information in one of those. The basic idea for Information is that each player spawns with a unique piece of info. You might have a note in your inventory that says "my father buried a safe at X location north of Kamenka." To make things really interesting, sometimes information will rely on other pieces of information. Two players could each have half of the same note, and would have to search each other out. This would be hard to implement and is a little more far fetched. Please take heed that the idea of the note in the inventory is just to provide a player interface for the information. You cannot take someone's information, you cannot loot it or otherwise gain it by killing the person. You can, however, interrogate them under certain conditions, or coerce them into telling you the info even if your intentions aren't pure. Information could thus create mini-quests. Go find your ex-partner's safe and use the combination to open it, or sell the location of the safe to another player who has the safe cracker role. By giving players these additonal ways to interact, none of which are forced and could be completely ignored, the value of life is enhanced. Instead of just going to set locations to find the best items, you may be able to use someone's information to track down a good cache-- or they may use their information to deceive you and set you up. Certainly these ideas should provide leeway for people to be "evil" as well as team up out of genuine teamplay.

Tail Rotor assemblies will be in before the weekend, 1.5.4ish. Vehicles are still pretty fucked at the moment, so keep your valuables on you until they are more stable.

    How do vehicle saves work?

Yeah basically vehicles are 'saved', but only per server. They don't transfer over to other servers. Also, if the server restarts or crashes, and nobody gets into and out of that vehicle before it restarts or crashes, the vehicle and its contents are not saved and are lost.

    How do vehicle saves work?

it works sometimes we spawnd in today to find one of our vehicles without 2 tires or a fixed engine and no gear that had been put in the night before

    DayZ Update 1.5.3

Yeah, attached to one server. Vehicles for sure, and depending on development, other things such as fortifications will also be persistent to the server they are spawned/constructed on.

    My thoughts and suggestions.

After another few hours of playing i came to a new idea. When playing i see that there is no official neutral ground beside forum for peaple to unite. 100% of terrain is hostile. So i thought of 2-3 NPC guarded bases spread on the map (AI can be mortal but i think it would be a magnet for griefers, so i wouldnt mind immortal npc.) The place can't be placed in towns as the loot spawn and zombie spawn would have to be changed. I think of some custom made base with AI guards that could kill on sight bandits.. Players could trade in that place and form some new groups. Meaby if there will be some trading system for NPC it would be good place too. It would be official safe zone from zombies and such, no zombies around so AI wouldnt use server sources for lag. Then if there would be zombies in forests and there would be slower movement between towns, it would nice if drop were more rare so people can actually trade between themselfs. Vehicles would have more value too. If towns could be conquered by players for not big amount of time as if you change server you can be in some not good situation, players actually could trade other as defenders of town cant go and scavange for food and other items. I know that in reality it wont work that perfectly but i think that is worth some thought.
  17. Great to hear, everybody's vehicles just disappeared on us3 and 4 with the new beta version.
  18. This same thing goes for placing items in vehicles, except the items just fall on the ground. The thing is, I'm not sure how the game determines where on the ground they will appear, because sometimes its a few feet behind the vehicle, and other times you can search the whole area for a half hour and not find anything (tested with jerrycans). I think it might place them at the nearest flat spot of ground but I cant be sure.

    Military Ambience

I think the original idea is a good one but I would say make it less mlitary, or indeed hav ea wide veriety of AI civillian characters/vehicles that randomly occour throughout the map to create atmosphere;(very occasionally, maybe once every 24 hours) e.g. - civiallian and military choppers/aircraft appearing occasionally - vehicles being driven in the distance, - boats on the horizon or sailing by - random gunshots maybe even crashing sometimes to give some loot
  20. 1. I wholeheartedly agree, and I've stated many times the weapons should be geared towards those that share ammo clips instead of specialise per weapon, cause god forbid if you find an AK or a NATO weapon your chances of finding ammo to go with it are slim and even then you spend more ammo getting to it then you get out of it usually. Having weapons/ammo drop near destroyed military vehicles is something I've constantly thought about, I mean in an apocalypse one of the places you'd look for items is in cars since they'd be stocked up by fleeing civilians or military in first place. 2. Again I agree, right now the only main place to find tents is in the main cities 3 story buildings and that's a massive gamble and huge walk from those of us set-up in the north, having stores around the map even just a few with tent spawn chances would defiantly improve things for us. 3. A good idea, we need more reason to take veterans away from the newbie spawns and two main cities. 4. I often find myself overstocked on food and drink in my skirmishes into towns and on every other zombie, me and my group have often gone on water bottle runs to fill up at a well and return to camp with it, needing to do that is fun and gives us stuff to do. 5&6. I don't really like this idea myself, in respect to players poisoning water, but in regards to sea water, and maybe still water which is dangerous to drink in real life yes, these water sources could follow your idea and need purifying by fire. This would make players actively seek out wells instead of the ocean. 7. as stated above, yes to finding ammo n guns near broken military vehicles. 8. The whistle...ehh I wouldn't use it myself if you could just use a radio or blink a flash-light instead. 9. yes radios would be useful and fun especially if you got them working like in ACRE. 10. technically you can, with a m203 flare, thou it's too rare so yea a flare gun for side-arm just like a torch but for flares. 11. kinda cosmetic really, if your being shot you'll hear the gun, but i suppose being able to tell difference visually would be beneficial. 12. This falls into one of my threads about villages should have generators in them that can be fuelled up and power the area for a few hours if you turn it on, making the street lights turn on and like you've suggested maybe speaker systems and the like. Perhaps players could make noise devices from scavenging a car horn and a battery, theres lots of various ideas about noisy things you could make. 13. I've also made a thread about this one too, I figured you'd need some defibs which would be as common as binocs roughly and for 5 minutes after death you can revive the player at the expenditure of a blood bag. 14. I've supported this suggestion on another thread, not just for tracking bandits but knowing if it's safe or not by seeing the corpses status is very useful, cause if they are warm and murdered you know to get into cover and hide.

PVP - Spawn Points and Safe havens

I had a clan mate steal a few of our vehicles for no reason besides just to drive them into the water, it's the internet and this mod is cutthroat.
  22. eroglik

    More vehicles

I think bigger vehicles should be harder to get parts for than others but definatly an increase in maybe ATVs or bycicles or something. Wouldn't want it where everyone in the server has their own private vehicles though. Otherwise everyone would just be zipping about zombie free :)
  23. Diamondback

What should our next competition be?

Memes tend to end up being a formulaic plagiarism of each other with no real originality or creativity involved. You'll get pages and pages of template memes. We could have an exploratory competition to encourage movement around the map. Something like a good old easter egg hunt. Put some special valuables in a special set of locations and the first people to find them are the winners. Though this is open to exploitation and imbalance... those with vehicles are at a huge advatage. How about a golden ticket style comp? Stick chocolate bars in the game and have a couple spawn with golden tickets (codes) that can be given to you for some kind of privelege. What about a race? Or how about a competition for the cleverest manipulation of zombies? Or for the most daring video. Or a community judged story competition. Or what about, what about a competition to decide on a good kind of competition... that's meta-game shit, yo.

Yes vehicles are persistent. Monkey zombies are what I nicknamed them. Crawler, hopper, rabbit. Many people have called them different things. They walk weird, they're a bit slower but harder to see
