    'hardcore' servers

I'm not sure what word to use describe this. I'm suggesting a list of 'elite' servers where your character is stored server-side. These would be servers where you would not be able to loot hop, ghost, or alt + f4 to avoid engagements (because you'd log straight back in in the same spot). I think this would be the fastest way to stop ghosting and loot farming, at least for that server. Any items on these servers would have to be found on THAT server. It would be a true DayZ experience. I've seen one or two of these servers around already...but I'm not sure if they're even legit. I'm suggesting an actual legit list, of maybe 10 different servers running this modification to the DayZ mod.

Logging out to avoid a serverhopper.

It's one of only a few major flaws the mod currently has but probably the most detrimental. They need to come up with a solution to the server hop loot farming and ghosting. It's out of control, especially as more people become aware of it being an easy way to cheat the game. It's definitely solvable but it all depends how high or low it is on the devs priority list and the longer they leave it the more it will annoy the community.

Logging out to avoid a serverhopper.

Logging out to avoid ghosters is legit. I was in the northern airfield, in the barracks, with a friend, looting. No, we weren't server hopping. We cleared the barracks, made sure it was empty, and then began looking through the loot. My friend was in the bathroom, when we heard footsteps. So I went prone in the room I was in (third from last) and just laid there watching the door, because I know the windows are magical bullet-stoppers. Guy starts talking to me in direct chat (doesn't know about my friend in the bathroom). We have the tactical advantage, and it's the goddamn BARRACKS, so when he says 'leave and we won't shoot you' I'm like 'lolno.' So then it's 'leave or we will kill you.' I say 'bring it'. So the guy is like 'okay, we're logging out now'. And he actually does leave the server. I smell a trap: so I get up, and RUN to the end room of the barracks, and wouldn't you know it? His faggot friend has just finished logging in to the farthest room. Well, a M4 on single shot does not measure up to a M14. I killed him, and then both my friend and I logged off. I have absolutely no regrets. I'm not going to continue to 'play fair' against a player who abuses the rules. If they do this 'ghosting' bullshit to get the perfect edge on me, then I will remove myself from their bullshit equations. Until there are measures put in to stop ghosting, I will log out when faced with a ghoster.

Logging out to avoid a serverhopper.

Yea, three of us got taken out by a ghoster near stary this morning, he shot anders in the head first, and then when we were keeping a sharp eye out, he suddenly appeared behind us and wasted us (he was a TERRIBLE shot, so I could see why he had to resort to ghosting). When Tim went down in front of me, I considered logging to save my life from the ghoster, but I decided not to. Goodbye all my medical supplies :( I don't mind dying, this game is cruel and I've accepted that, but dying to complete bullshit is extremely frustrating.

Out of bounds item/vehicles cleanup [2012-07-06]

The green acres Im refering to that now have a 6h respawn limit is the area outside of vegetation (no grass texture except the flat ground, the border can be clearly seen and other people here have posted pictures). You arent supposed to be able to pitch tents there but due to bugs it has sometimes been possible anyway. Tents, sandbags, wirekits, tank traps and so forth have now been wiped. There are fields in far north, west and northwest that are fine to setup bases in that still have long grass. But I'd personally say those fields are usually where people get the same idea... so they stumble upon other people camps. Someone complained that this is a "win" for carebears. I'd say this is a nerf against carebears who want safe places to store their phat lewtz. This is a boost to playing inside the map borders. Grow a pair, hide your bases better in deep forests. Dont store your vehicles in large psuedo-parking lots where they are easy to spot. Got myself a nice little camp in almost center of map where we have a couple of tents. Gone 2 weeks without anyone finding it (L85, NVG, rangefinder etc). If you want to build big camps (that are easy to spot), prepare to defend it or keep watch. I know some hardcore communities out there actually post guards through out the day/night to spot hostiles. As for the future. I've got a few ideas on how to assist people who do want to build bases and fortify it. I'll be discussing it with Rocket and see what he thinks. And also a few ideas on method to handle ghosting, more on that in separate posts.

Logging out to avoid a serverhopper.

i think it should say who killed you in chat where it says u died example johnDoe was killed by TheGhoster i think it would help for bans on people that do do ghosting i have had this happen to me i was sitting with a sniper rifle over looking my buddy raiding the tents in stary when i saw a guy running up on him i fired 2 shots missed them both after that he dc and next thing u know the guy idk how he found me came up behind me while my buddy was comming back to me shot me in the head and dc again all my buddy said was someone spawned next to me shot me in the head and dc again im pretty sure it was the same guy for one reason i wasnt in really good cover and after i fired he did turn and see me
  7. I believe this server reboots every 6 hours. I was DC'ed at 3PM and 9 PM on separate days. As with any player, disco'ing / ghosting to avoid death in the middle of a gunfight is 100% bitchtitted and lame. And this is why you don't use a bus:

The Walking Dead USMC is recruiting

As of now, US 35 will ban if you are caught server ghosting (disconnecting to gain an advantage while engaged in PVP), combat logging or debug forest killing. "Disconnecting to avoid death IS an exploit. It will be patched out, very easily, in a future update. The update is ready to go and will be released when the Beta patch for ArmA2 is out." - Rocket Taken from: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=8029&highlight=meta Be advised that all of our members are running either video capture software or screen shot software. In addition, I can pull server logs to match time stamps. And be assured that if you are banned from our server for doing so while I cannot issue you a global ban I will make sure that other server admins get your name, GUID and ISP as well as inform the DayZ staff of any infraction against their terms of use. If you have an issue with that, find another server.

    Disconnecting to avoid death

I just can't believe how long you have talked about this. All that needs to be in place is a logout timer. Just like a fucking mmo. 30 second logout timer to avoid this very problem. Now if they are ghosting just make it so you can't auth your CD key more than once in a 5 minute time frame. That is based off the hive not the game server so I am not sure why you are talking about server performance. Really? you would want it to be no logging out in a town/city/airfield. that is retarded and ruins the free form of the game. 2 easy fixes logout timer Cant auth cd key more than once in a 5 minute time frame. Longer to find a server but I would deal with that to stop douche bags from spawning behind me and shooting me when they had no chance simple enough.

Idea how to make killing a harder choice

Another way to try and control people from going down the path of a bandit. Face it, because people are faceless they kill without remorse and because there's either a group of them or they know everyone is doing it they feel justified. We just need a way to make death seem like the worst thing in the game whilst diverting ghosting, and a way to recognize other people whilst retaining that fear of not knowing if someone is friend or foe.

    Removing stuff off-map

Giving notice at all is a HUGE blessing to a lot of people. Not myself because I don't ever go off map. I will not rely on an exploit that everyone knows will be patched out. Stop the alt-f4 and ghosting issues and we will really have something here.
  14. I know there are a hundred threads about this already, and I'm opening the doors to flamers, but I just needed to get my two cents in, as it's kind of becoming a huge issue that I can say has gotten worse. It's happened to us all. We get into an engagement with other player(s), they take their shots. You finally gain position on them, fire, hit, and they log out. It happened to me once within my first few days of playing. It's irritating to say the least, but I accepted that a) we're in alpha and b) asshats will be asshats. However, we also have to deal with a similar issue called 'ghosting' where we shoot at someone, they log out, go to a low pop server and gain a better position, relog to the old server right behind you and kill you. I see more and more of this the more I play. To me it seems like more people are learning this exploit and using it everytime they encounter other players. Today, my group finally made it to the nw airfield, ready to form up and loot the hangars. While we were looting we heard a shot from the other side of the airfield. Since I was overwatch I spotted him, aimed at him with my m107, but as soon as he saw me getting ready to shoot he just disappeared. We continued to loot for a moment when out of thin air someone logs in right in front of 2 of my group mates, kills them, then logs out again. 5 minutes later, as I'm trying to get out of there without alerting zombies, the same person appears in front of me. Luckily I had a good angle at him and I saw him first, he runs behind a truck and quickly logs out again. I climb down the ladder and start heading towards the woods when BANG I get hit and killed by the same guy who appears behind me. One guy took all 3 of us out by 'ghosting'. So cheap. But I accepted my death regardless, and respawned near Bolata in hopes to get some good starter gear. We regroup and start looting when we encounter 3 other players, we say 'we're friendly' but of course they open fire, missing all shots. When we start firing back, they all logged out. We were wise from the last time at the nwairfield and decided to get out of there before they spawned behind us. We headed to Cherno for med supplies since one of us was hit and needed blood ASAP. We raid the northern hospital, then we start checking the apartment buildings when we see someone enter the furthest building down from us. We shouted friendly once again. And decided to stay in the same apartment building. After 5 minutes of waiting for someone to poke out of that building, we hear revolver shots inside the apartment we were in. The guy logged out, ghosted his way on top of the roof of the building, and took all 3 of us out in the building with his revolver and akm. Frustrated we started again, headed north, we spotted a crashed heli near Kozlovka. As we approached we noticed 3 other players also approaching it, we were unseen, so we fell back into the treeline to decide whether to let them pass or engage. 2 of them spotted us in the treeline and tried to flank. Since we knew where they would come from we were prepared with our primaries pointing downrange. I spotted them both running right towards me, I took a shot at one of them, hit him, and they both INSTANTLY LOG OUT. My group mates also saw the one behind the heli disappear out of thin air. Instead of rushing the heli and trying to loot everything as fast as possible, we decide to gain higher and closer ground and over watch the heli for when they would inevitably come back. After waiting 10 minutes, one of our group members got brave enough to go in and check it out. He found a Bizon and was pretty excited to have his first silenced weapon when we heard a shot. The shot missed him so we told him to retreat back to us. He got there and we were regathering composure for a couple of minutes, when the same guy POOF appeared not even 3 feet beside us and opened fire. He killed our friend with the Bizon but we were fast enough to turn on him and opened fire again. I swear not ONE bullet left our barrels before he logged out again. Also for some reason, our friend's body glitched into the ground and we were unable to loot him for the Bizon or his other gear. And these were just the incidents that happened today. In the last 2 days EVERY person we engaged has logged out. I'm not even exaggerating. EVERY single person. And the funniest part? I play with about 10 other people and not one of us have EVER done that. We accept our deaths. It's a game, and death is inevitable. It SUCKS to die in a group because then the whole group gets separated from you. But STILL we never log or ghost on anyone. I know that honor on the internet is almost non-existent, but STILL PEOPLE! Come on, you are going to die, just take it like a man (or woman). I really enjoy DayZ. I enjoy being a survivor, I enjoy the tension when dealing with bandits and firefights. I'm not one of those ones that moans and groans when he gets sniped by a bandit, in fact, I usually give compliments if the bandits were smart about the engagement and outplayed us. But when 90% of engagements result in people cheating to win, then why even continue to play? Because it's alpha I guess. But even Rocket said this problem was an 'easy fix'. Rocket I BEG you to at least introduce something, even if it's glitchy and people rage about realism or w/e, give us a hotfix to prevent this behavior from happening. At the moment the legit players are having their alpha testing experience ruined because we WANT to help the community, we WANT it to grow, we WANT to help the mod, but we are forced to deal with asshats who don't even give us a chance to play the game the way it's meant to be played. I want to know WHO killed me, so I can report them for cheating, but we don't have obituaries/killfeeds that tell us who killed us. I promise you as a tester I will report EVERYONE and ANYONE who behaves like this, as I record most of my gameplay. At least give us testers a way to fight this problem, instead of just having to 'deal with it'. And this all happened on Atlanta 58, if anyone is wondering, and these stories happened to us at different times of the day. I won't play there again because I feel as though the server itself is an asshat magnet (considering all the side-chat voice was from people who sounded younger than 10). Sorry for the TL;DR and forum rage, but since I am a writer I thought I could help others who have not encountered this problem to understand how frustrating it is. HOWEVER! This will not stop us from playing, testing, and enjoying this mod! We love it, we love Rocket's philosophy, and we love how it encourages a high level of teamwork. But judging by how severe this issue is becoming, something needs to be done ASAP. Thanks for giving this a read.

Finding Nemo - Looking for someone?

To Dave, Muggy and the third bloke who's name I can't remember that I met at the Cherno firestation. Thanks for the fun lads and that bastard was ghosting I even shot him for you once.
  16. First off. The loot system is a total pile of shit so redesigning that before makes any changes to 'fix' the current system is a waste of time. Second, it does NOTHING to counter PvP/server ghosting as i've seen some claim it will in this thread. Most PlayerKillers (I'm not using the term 'Bandit' because its fucking defunct.) are there just to kill you, they already have their weapons of choice most likely, and if you haven't figured it out yet, They aren't killing you for your loot. They are killing you for the lulz, and the tears. Third, and this is the game breaker for this idea: Say i have a mate or two with me, I can just walk/drive 1500 meters away from my favorite spawn point while my friends hop in the barracks say. They can spawn kill everyone, I just drive in and collect the loot for them. Your fix has been out maneuvered that simply. Seems like you had a good idea. But no, you didn't. how did it take you guys 9 pages to see it doesn't work.
  17. Hmm yea theres some good ideas in here. It makes me feel uncomfortable that a restriction is being put on a player but peeps really shouldnt be server hoping for loot, or ghosting!!! The main problem i see in this, is peeps being subject to this punishment for genuine reasons like some explained, finding a server that meets their suiting, I always play Day Z during the night, it would suck if i never got to play a server operating a diff time zone. But not until at least Day Z is in beta format, then i see this as a potential. Whilst Server Hosts cant uniformly decide on which what arma2 patch over which DayZ update under that hackers shit pile, restart, restart!!!

    Discouraging server hopping for loot

hmmm, 50m - 100m aint that far really, i see this as better for discouraging ghosting. The only solution to this whole problem might actually be just reducing the number of servers, increasing the numbers of people they can hold. And, i hate to say it peeps, fix survivors down to a limited number of them (so peeps can at least have the option of choosing night and day, some peeps can only play some periods of the day). Maybe once their life is up they have more freedom to rechoose which servers.
  19. This isn't the first time a 7thCav member or admin "friend" has shut their server down because they died and lost their stuff. http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3798 A few people got banned for killing the admin, with the reason given being "ghosting on TS". I was actually on the Teamspeak at the time it happened and was banned for backing up the folks that posted that thread. We're actually friends now, and they're pretty cool dudes that don't like admin clans ruining servers with their BS. Wonder why! 7thCav seems to have issues with people outplaying them and stealing their things~

    Disconnecting to avoid death

How to prevent Ghosting: Whenever a player logs out/disconnects from a server, the server saves their location info for a specified amount of time (15-30 minutes perhaps). If that player logs back in within that time frame, the server puts them at their previous location, overriding any change in their location that may have occurred via server-hopping.
  21. Hey guys, I've been playing this mod now for a couple of weeks and it is without a doubt one of the most unique and compelling ideas I have ever seen. When I first saw the "average life expectacy: 32 minutes" on the page I thought "Pfft, noobs" and then proceeded to die in about 32 seconds on my first avatar. Hearing gunshots in the distance has never been so electrifying in any other game, nor has the scope of the world ever been approached in a game like this. With all that positive stuff being said, however, my friends and I have been compiling a list of suggestions that we feel would make the game more interesting and hopefully address what we perceive as some issues. I have read some of these ideas in other posts or talking in passing with other players about them but decided to compile them here to 5 main points. Several of these ideas relate to one another and I'll try to point these out. 1.) Ammo Scarcity As it stands, there is no ammo scarcity. Go into any barn and find a Winchester with 15-30 rounds. Paw through Cherno or Electro and you'll wind up passing up so many bits of ammo because your inventory is completely full. At one point I had just respawned a new character and had a Lee Enfield with 50 rounds within 30 minutes. This problem I believe stems from two things. First, I don't believe that currently ammo can spawn in any capacity other than full. Continuing with the Winchester example, if I see one on the ground with 2 sets of shells near it, I am guaranteed 30 rounds. Ideally, each "drop" should contain an extremely low amount of ammo. If I see a Winchester with 2 sets of ammo next to it, I should realistically get 2-4 rounds. Secondly, not enough targets. Even if ammo was made really scarce, all that you're changing is to make it take longer to stockpile, not truly making it scarce. More zombies, zombies that take more shots, heavy zombie concentrations around better loot areas, etc. could all have a bearing on this. The ideal scenario is that you would be almost forced to expend ammo to have a chance to gain it. Obviously stealth should still have a role, especially in smaller towns where new people who don't have weapons need to get started, but it shouldn't negate the need to engage zombies completely. Different types of zombies could be tied in here as well, so zombies in military grade gear areas could be a lot more aggressive / intelligent / stealth detecting. 2.) Military Grade Gear I very strongly feel that most of the military gear has no place in the current game, especially things like the DMR or L85. Why? Several reasons. First, it focuses player activity around certain areas. Rather than organically running into people and utilizing the full world, almost all of the players are centered around one of about four places. This encourages what has been referred to as "DeathMatching" in several other threads which, I think we can all agree, is not the point of the mod. Killing for no reason than "lulz I have a sniper rifle and I'm bored" is overall bad for the game because it discourages new people. This could partly be resolved by making gear spawning less deterministic in location. There are plenty of towns that have no military gear spawn chance that are completely ignored. A guy who lives down the street from me in real life has a working AK47, so I don't think it is too far a stretch to think that gear should be more randomized. This could be further enhanced by having a diminishing returns on gear spawn rate - if there's a 10% chance of something spawning originally, it goes down by 1% per hour where a player is in the area and back up by 1% when there is not. The goal is to encourage whole map usage and multiple locations. Secondly, it enters MMO style "gear rushing". Things such as the L85 or Night Vision Goggles are simply better in every respect than their alternatives. There is no reason to find a clever use for road flares or chem lights or flashlights or anything like that - just rush the NVG spawn until you find some and you're set forever. Which is truly a shame, because night time play without them is an experience I haven't found anywhere else. For contrast, a Makarov has common ammunition but poor damage compared to a 1911. A Lee Enfield has proper iron sights for better long range shooting, but a Winchester is quieter and has a larger magazine size. These are weapons with tradeoffs. Thirdly, things such as the DMR or L85 don't promote what I believe the game is about - realistic survival. A semi automatic sniper rifle one hit kill / thermal optics assault rifle is not an anti zombie weapon or a self defense weapon or even a hunting weapon - it's a player killing weapon. And not even a "kill you for your beans" type of weapon since you will likely be killing someone far away that you won't even bother looting. This problem is related to #1 (ammo scarcity) and could in theory be alleviated by it. A DMR would be fine if you really had to think about pulling the trigger instead of just spraying down an area with 7.62 rounds knowing you have 20 more clips in your tent. Making military grade ammo ultra rare could be the balancing factor. 3.) Gear Degradation Without going into a lot of detail, basically Fallout or FarCry2 style gear degradation. The more you use something, the more wear it suffers and eventually needs to be repaired using similar things, leading to jams, misfires, reduced accuracy, etc. This would help make common guns like a Makarov more interesting (easier to maintain) and help to reel in some of the higher end weapons by making them harder to maintain as you would need to visit more dangerous areas to find similar components. It also makes looting more interesting because you might find a rusty shotgun which is unreliable and eventually loot your way up to a shiny new one. Also, being outside in inclement weather or being hit by zombies could degrade the weapon. 4.) Reasons to Work Together This is perhaps the toughest one on the list, but it is related to all the other points. Right now I will shoot anyone on sight that is near me or that I think sees me. Why? There's no reason not to. Right now the game exists in a sort of "Prisoner's Dilemma" state - since there is nothing to be gained from working together with a stranger, if I let him live the outcomes are either "I keep living, which I would have done anyway" or "I die and he takes my beans." That's an obvious choice. To be clear, this is not a "take away PvP" suggestion. Player killing is an integral part of the game and not one I want to see go away. All I want to see is a reason for me to consider not shooting on sight. Making ammunition more scarce makes this more interesting. I might need to bluff with my empty shotgun. We might decide that we each have a few rounds and we can therefore loot a better place. We might find that since we lack the means to shoot eachother in the first milliseconds, we have a chance at interaction. I might find him chasing me with a crowbar as I take off running into the woods, trying to loose him over a hill top or something rather than turning a corner and getting 2 slugs in the chest and a respawn screen. I'm not sure if the ArmA engine allows for it, but imagine having a friend help you over a wall you couldn't get over normally. Or even just small things like that might nudge you in the peace direction: - having another player bandage you restoring some blood. - limiting the amount of gadgets you can carry at one time so finding a guy with a compass or a hunting knife is useful alive rather than as loot. - being able to share resources, such as if I select a can of beans I can "eat beans" or "share beans with Joe". If I eat them it works like today where I get 100% food restored, but if I share it we each get 50% food restored. It's not often that I consume resources at 0% so this could let groups be a bit more rewarding. You could even go full bore with this and have a class that you choose at rollup. Are you going to be a medic (faster and more healing bandages / transfusions, maybe can set broken bones without morphine)? A huntsman (more and better animal meat)? A gunsmith (better / more efficient gun maintenance)? Having people being able to bring different skillsets to the table provides a lot more in the way of making interactions more interesting. 5.) Cheap Stuff Some of this is bugs, some of it is just what we consider non-ideal design decisions. A lot of this has been hashed already so just a quick summary. This is the sort of stuff where I die and question whether I actually want to keep playing. I have had friends quit over some of this as well. Dying is not a problem as its the core of the mod - dying to stupid things or things completely outside your control is what is frustrating. - Zombie speed. wtf. Combined with extremely poor hit registration / death registration, every encounter with zombies right now is a wait until they're running straight at you or run inside and kill them as they come through the door. - Being knocked out. My most recent character died because he was knocked out on the first hit from one zombie from 9300 blood. The hourglass timer must have been set to a minute or something because that one zombie killed me before I could get back up. I don't dislike the idea of being knocked out, but lets make the durations and trigger zones reasonable. - Zombie ghosting. Zombies moving through walls and their frankly atrocious pathing in and around buildings is a touch infuriating. This might be an ArmA AI issue, but even still. - Standing up when crossing a threshold. I have absolutely no idea what causes this or what if anything I can do to prevent it, but I have died several times when stealthing among zombies and my avatar decides he's going to stand up. - Ammo refilling. From what I have read it sounds like this is being addressed but wanted to throw it up anyway. I noticed this when I found a suppressed M9 and was using it to loot a small village at the end of a play session. When I came back the next day it had full ammo again. I did a bit of googling and it sounds like there are quite a few people abusing this with some weapons. - Instant logout. I hear this is being addressed as well but wanted to put my support behind it. 5-10 minutes from your last being hit (or almost being hit) or shot fired would be fine. Thoughts and responses welcome.
  22. cute btw i've screen n posted like 13 of =DRN= disconnecting and ghosting n still failing to defend their NWAF... this is another exploit 2 of us versus 13 =DRN= lol FAIL 5 down rest DC'd never came back
  23. In your opinion, is it acceptable to disconnect and reconnect to enter a building that has had the entrance blocked off by barbed wire or some other obstacle? For example, I was looting some medical tents yesterday and saw some ammo for my gun inside a tent, however, the entrance had been blocked off by barbed wire. I had no qualms ghosting inside to get the loot, however, I was wondering if others felt the same about situations like these.

    Disconnecting to avoid death

Guys, this is alpha, it is meant to test how the game system works and what exploits need to be wiped out its the most early stage of a game, and people shouldn't be expecting to have fair gameplay or even balanced one, since this is beyond pure functionality and goes into balancing, which is most of the time made in beta or even after game release however, i totally agree that this needs primary attention right now: 1) Server hopping (also known as ghosting) People disconnect, when confronted with a camp thats surrounded with fences for example, and jus log in where they want to I know rocket has done much to make the game a persistent world, but with so many servers and the game type, it just doesnt fit well together 2)DC'ing in mids combat Annoying, yet not gamebreaking, maybe give people a 10 minute ban from the master game server when they log out in cities or near any building whatsoever, maybe even let people spawn nowhere except in forrests... i dont know, i have no solution to this All in all, at the moment, i really feel like server-side saved characters would be way better, you start new on every server on the beach... however this could be annoying with servers thatare always full, or clan servers with too many members etc. sry for doubleposting, but

You deserved to die when you are ghosting . I hope all the server admins read this and ban you since you want to exploit.
