Do you Need a GPU just to Host Dayz

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I'm new to hosting but not new to Dayz,

My question is this, do you need a strong graphics card just to host Dayz?

Reason im asking this question because I currently wanna run a Dedicated Private Server for me and my friend and test/play and I can support the internet speeds and the hardware is what keeps getting me.

I'm not planning on running a Xeon 8 core with 8 GB's of ram and a strong GPU to run the game.

Most gaming servers I see don't even need a gpu from what I have read on Counter Strike etc, and they just run a program and thats it and can leave the pc headless with no monitor and play off there other personal pc.

I'm thinking of doing the same having one PC running the server app with all opened ports no monitor but kept on at all times, and then run my personal pc and run the game and join the server.

(We are planning on testing Dayz and helping out the community)

Short answer, no.

My private hive runs on on an older rack mount server with minimal on board video (ATI Rage XL IIRC) and no sound hardware at all.

Cool thanks guys, usually I'll probably just have to worry about the network connection speed then. I believe for most games it's 64Kbps per player so I should be able to handle everything just fine.

Another question are you guys running any heavy processors on your private hives?

I'm not, but my server is just for fun and there's never been more than 3 people on at a time. ;)

The spare server in my basement specs:

Dual AMD Opteron somethingorother @2GHz

6GB RAM

Windows 7

PATA 80GB HDD

Someone with a real server can give you a better idea of requirements.

The specs for running a dayz server are far less than what they require in official posts. (exaggerated there).

You will use ALOT of bandwidth, but if you are going local minimal specs were posted above - which would be fine.

If your gunna go dedicated and have 1 server + sql running, look at something like a 4-core 8gb of ram max.

Anything else is wasting your money.

My 6 core 8gb ram machine at full player slot used about 60% of it's total resource and that's with web server and other scripts running outside of the game enviroment.

and p.s

NO you don't need a gpu.

Thanks guys,

Everyone answered my question perfectly and quickly,

I never ran a game server but it should'nt be difficult since I mess with computers everyday. The reason I got confused is because on certain tutorials they run arma to show that the server is running then they disconnect. So im like well if the directory is in the pc then they installed the game but they only have to run the run server application and port forward on that machine and thats it.

Overall thanks guys for helping me out,

Everyone got beans

Yeah around there, but best for 32.

I have a solid connection (32-38 download) (6 upload) its unlimited also, and I can have admins during certain hours but the main thing i was worried about is the processor, cause if your on a server and things don't load and zombies if they start chasing you but not to many, I was thinking more on the side of how things will run and how smoothly for the experience.
