Sleeping

Recommended Posts

That's mean you have to play all the time everyday in order to survive.

No thanks !

I haven't played DayZ for almost a couple weeks now... no real opportunity to sit down and mess around for a few hours. This suggestion would also likely result in tons of sleeping bodies all over the map...

I don't agree with the sleeping thing, because you're totally vulnerable. In real life you'd actually be there, able to wake up and react, this would be like some weird "in stasis" version...

I kind of think players should remain in the game (sitting down pose?) for perhaps 1 minute if they log out, that would probably result in a few unfair deaths, but it would be worth it to pretty much totally stop combat logging.

On the other hand... I'd be pissed if a hacker showed up and my character was stuck in-game for one whole minute...

Combat logging would still be a problem with this sleep system because people could simply log in to another server or within the given time and move or bandage or do whatever. Sleeping would only affect the people who decide to log off for the night in the middle of NWAF, for example.

In my opinion, logging off and logging in are some of the most immersion breaking things in dayz. I'm looking for ways to make those actions have more meaning and also require thought and care when doing them.

TERRIBLE IDEA.. it makes no sense. You have to give some room for actual " computer game rules" rather than crossing the line trying to make everything as realistic as possible.. some things just need to be left alone.. just consider your character to be asleep every time you log out then he happens to awake just before you log in ;)

If it made no sense you wouldn't be so passionate about keeping it out of the game.

Why is this going too far? Enlighten me please, I'd love to have my mind changed on this suggestion. Right now, it appears to me that you dislike it because it means extra "work" for you. Am I mistaken? Is there something I'm not seeing?

It's actually kind of funny that you see removing an unrealistic part of DayZ as punishment.

What if I turned your argument around on you... why am I being punished constantly for playing so often? People that don't have as much time to play as I do are rewarded with magical security.

I suggested this because when I started playing DayZ you had to login and eat everyday or end up dying of hunger/thirst when you came back. I like this idea that even if I stopped playing, the game kept going, it created the idea of a living virtual world. So, I thought perhaps Rocket could build on that with a sleep mechanic.

I understand the concern about this suggestion, if we implemented this tonight on the mod, it would ruin a lot of peoples games. But, if something like this was built into the game over time, people would adapt and adjust their game accordingly.

We already have tents full of gear sitting there for the taking, I don't really see the issue with having players sitting there for the taking/killing. People can hide tents, why can't they hide a sleeping player?

you want realism? GO OUTSIDE

#1: Search Function.

#2: Realism? We've got zombies infected creatures. (Sorry, just had to bring that argument into this, because I mean... What else is there to say?)

#3: What about when some inventive child comes up with a script that automatically kills all sleeping avatars at the push of a button. Isn't it bad enough as it is?

#4: Should #3 get replied with "whitelisted servers", I will be forced to hunt you down and eat your beans, then laugh maniacally as I swing my hatchet at your face.

My idea of sleeping is that you have a tiredness meter. Upon completely diminishing your sleep meter you will suddenly have slurry vision, Hallucinations and slower reactions, If you don't sleep for a long time you will pass out from exhaustion. Sleeping bags or beds may are a good way to replenish your sleep meter, If you are in a passenger seat of a car you may be able to sleep (Must be fully repaired).

It takes roughly about an hour for sleep to be fully depleted and doing such things as sprinting, Taking damage from zombies and staying awake when the sleep meter is low will deduct sleep at a faster rate.

The tiredness meter appears in the same box along with temperature, Hunger and thirst. My thought on what it would look like would be this.

Fatigue: (11%/4000%) - (Left shows how much wakefulness is left/ Right shows max capacity. So this player would be very tired and they may suffer sleep deprivation side effects.

When fully refreshed reaction speed is increased and the player is given extra energy. Minor damage (apart from breaking leg or bleeding) can be healed after continuous sleeping. A downside is though that when you do wake fully refreshed you wake hungry. (BREAKFAST. YES!)

It takes roughly about 10 minutes to completely replenish your sleep meter back to 2000 however the longer you sleep the faster it regenerates so it may only take 5 minutes for to fill your sleep meter if you are not interrupted while sleeping. You may also sleep in short bursts but this may not be as efficient. However it would be good if you where in a group so you could take sleep shifts.

Overall this is my idea of sleeping. The O.P's idea was good but I really had this idea in my head for ages.

^I think that version would be better. Although in my opinion some of the times may need to be adjusted if it ever got implemented.

#1. Search function? You're six months late on that pro tip.

#2. Realism, because we live in the real world.

#3. Then some people die and lose their gear. OH THE HORROR!

#4. Fuck whitelisting.

Yeah I can but into that fact that you need sleep and with sleep comes being vulnerable. That being said you can not have everyone's body stay in game.

What could be done is something like when you log off your character is actually going to sleep and so once you are disconnected your character will remain in game for 10 minutes until it despawns. It would add the vulnerability to being asleep everytime you log out but would not be over the top IMO.

I can't see sleep as being any good here...

We as the players require sleep, how much sleep we have determines our decision making ability, our ability to focus and of course to perform under duress.

For the same reason I conceded on my sanity idea and acknowledged morale as a bad idea as well, I don't see why something gimmicky as sleep should be taken in to account.

I don't think that's such a good idea, as realistic as it may be. If it's ever implemented and I don't think it will be, I want to be able to fake it so I can kill the bastard that's trying to kill me.

Emotional? I'm just asking for more detail. I'm not the type of person who sees the words "TERRIBLE IDEA" in red font and immediately has my mind changed. But hey, if it's just a gut feeling and you can't explain your thoughts, not a problem.

Thanks for the feedback.
