water from the sea

Recommended Posts

I actually like his Preventive Maintenance suggestion. Make it one of those actions the character automatically does when idle or sitting down. Also, they need to fix the smoking animation. The character sometimes smokes when idle but there is no cigarette and no lighter, no smoke, nothing. It would be more realistic if the character when you go to move him/her would throw the cigarette or cigar away.

If you read to the bottom I said I don't have a problem with a simple purification process after collection. Although less realistic clicking "purify water", no matter the source of the water to the outcome of clean water, is better than sticking a pH strip in it or finding chlorine tablets (although chlorine tablets are the fastest, safest option). I agree all standing water should be purified of salt or bacteria or whatever else. But, I'm not going to spend my time finding supplies to purify water, to drink water, then to start again finding purification items before I dehydrate again.

I think it would be an option to have a distilling kit aka flask as a tool on your belt you find so that should you need to purify some water and you have it on your tool belt, when you light a fire, have the canteen or jerry can of water, an option when scrolling on the fire says "distill" and the caracter will go through the process of distilling for like 5-10 seconds. Maybe you see a short animation of some flask being used then put away. Nothing like finding parts for a car.

How about a "purification kit" that does it all instead of another random belt tool.

If you read to the bottom

Of course I read your post, I just focussed on the negative reaction you had to complicated bits 'n' bobs.

The way I see it, these things (if it comes to fruition) will become second nature to wildernessers.

I know, from watching interviews, Rocket wants to make survival tough. Really tough. And I want to survive the apocalypse or die trying.

A purification kit on the toolbelt (with a funky little animation) is the most likely outcome, I just picture it being slightly more complicated than *click**click**click* - pure water

Anyone who's chopped wood or pumped gas by hand can attest to those activities being slightly more complicated than a few clicks as well, but ARMA isn't set up for those sort of minigames.

I pretty much assumed the wood cutting would get souped up for standalone too.

Maybe it's a pipedream, maybe we'll just get nothing and told to fuck off. Only time will tell.

Somewhere deep inside you have to know that the limits of desalinization animation is squating over a fire and stirring (maybe). And with their talks of removing third person what would be the point? Looking at a fire animation (first person) that repeats every five seconds. Stirring the exact same way over and over again because a twenty minute long unique animation would require it's own hard drive. Waiting for a half hour or longer, locked into a cutscene until water reaches boiling point then evaporates. That is not good.

I would be for setting up water traps perhaps. Plastic over a hole with plant material inside with a container in the middle for collecting evaporation through condensation, but not if I have to find each individual piece of the trap and harvest plant material to feed it. I think you need to go camping. =]

I hadn't heard that.

Fuck that.

News to me too. You got a link to share?

I love me some infos

EDIT: Also, I imagined to filter water you'd have to move water between containers. - Aqua pura. Shaken not stirred ;)

This idea needs work but I like where it's going. Personally when it comes to thirst I think it's too easy to survive in the wild with nothing but a common water bottle. Maybe ALL natural water should be filtered/distilled.

I backpack a lot and carry a portable filter with me for filling up at streams and lakes. It won't filter salt water but it could be purified some other way.

Why would you even bother doing this when there is a pond up the road?

cause not ALL maps have lots of ponds or wells and pumps. try finding working ones in Fallujah or Panthera. I havent found one yet.

They look different but basically every town has a functioning pump. The pipe coming off it is shaped like a big L. You can't miss them. Well, I mean ... I didn't.

It's not like when you swim in a lake and swallow some by accident. If you're drinking pond water to survive it should be pasteurised,(71oC) before consumption.

Drinking dirty water contaminated with giardiasis (where animals go #2 in the area) would cause you to have gut expulsion from all ends. Which would leave you dehydrated, then dead.

Even the water pumps in towns (on all DayZ maps) are potential reservoirs of water borne diseases.

I'm not sure if I'd rather die from diarrhoea or being eaten. Probably go with being eaten.

All you need to collect water is a hole in the (damp) ground, a plastic bag, a cup and some pebbles.

Homemade solar still 101:

Dig hole

Place cup in hole

fix bag tight over hole

place pebble on bag over the cup

leave for a while

???

drink

you obviously did not READ. Fallujah and Panthera....... Panthera has some ponds but so far not pumps or wells. Fallujah has map labels for pumps but no actual pumps and wells.

What the shit is Panthera anyways? Do survivors look like Thundercats?

wow, you obviously dont keep up with the times. there are other maps NOT just Chernarous and Lingor. Panthera is a Mountainous Island map. Use your ability to surf the web for useful things when I mention dayZ maps you have not heard of instead of responding with retarded quips.

Panthera, lingor and fallujah are not official maps AFAIK so why should anyone care about them?

On topic, i would like the option to drink seawater with the effect that it makes you thirstier and removes some blood so dumb people would have something to wonder about.

You could utilize the conventional thirst mechanic and just have it have a net negative effect instead of a positive one. That would ultimately lead to a rapid loss of blood.

You would care about them as the stock map has become rather stagnant. Many/most of us know the map forward and backward, i know i dont need a map to move about chernarus anymore. The map is in my head. Non-stock maps give flavor and change of scenery that can keep DayZ players interested in the game longer. After all, it is currently just a Mod of a game. When it is standalone then the matter of "official" maps would be important. The fact that Rocket is working with the Private Hive guys...(the main reason we have alternate maps) to include Private hives in the "official" standalone version is important to note.

On topic though, being able to drink seawater that has been Distilled would provide an alternate method of staying hydrated. Since distilled water is NOT difficult to make, NOT dangerous to drink, and IS used in survival guides, I believe it makes perfect sense that it would be added to a Zombie Survival game like DayZ which is built on top of a Military SIMULATOR engine.
