okay so basically rocket wants the modders to make the game ...

Recommended Posts

from what im watching a listening to live at the expo rocket is on about giving the code to modders to see what they can do . saying hes not good enough for alot of the stuff .

once these modders have done all this great work then what ? will they get funds for basically maintaining making dayz better ? making the content .

he said himself maybe its lazy way of doing tihngs i think its more than lazy tbh.

this is one of the reasons why private servers are the better way of now playing dayz because others are doing the stuff to maintain the game. i understand the group maybe busy i just hope the people who actually do the extra stuff get full credit and maybe even jobs or funds for basically making the company alot of money in the future.

The Arma community has been creating mods for years. DayZ is one of those mods. From the Devs point of view the mod has served it's purpose and put them in a position to make the game of their dreams. Now it will eventually be turned over to the community for them to do with as they wish. People who make mods don't usually do it for the money, it's either a hobby or people are experimenting with different ideas. That's how DayZ was created. I really don't see the problem.

I'd like to see him concentrating fully on standalone at this point. Dayz is good enough and isn't going to be "fixed" without massive amounts of modification, so better to go full steam on the standalone and get a quality product out in a timely manner. I've been having fun between getting abused by hackers and griefers for a couple months now, a couple more before UNINTERUPTED ZOMBIE SURVIVAL ECSTACY is fine with me.

He always said the plan was to hand over the mod to the community, which is a great plan to give the mod up to a community that cares about the game and is willing to put in numerous unpaid hours to make a better gaming experience. Check out some of the mods planned by some of these people and you will understand why this is a great thing and how it will keep this mod playable even after the standalone. Recently we have seen new content added by Vilayer (ok I should say Vilayer taking community ArmA2 maps and pasting zombies and loot into them without many alterations, but still very fun) and this trend will hopefully continue and get even better.

The team developing the standalone is fairly small so it is understandable that they do not have time to patch the mod while simultaneously working on the standalone project. After standalone was announced I always knew the mod would become something of an afterthought to the developers since there is only so much time in a day. I look forward to playing the standalone while also checking out some of the cool ideas this community can come up with, sounds like a win win for everyone involved.

No single project is the work of one person, look at what the community has done in the last few weeks, stopping hackers, more vehicles and weapons, modified servers and even on the suggestions board there is a guy who have come up with a mod for lighting the streets and buildings on a night.

Rocket can't do it all himself and should not be expected to. He did DayZ all by himself with help from the community. For his insight and kindness we all get to play the mod. Now he is working on ths SA, this will take time and anything he can't do I'm sure he will ask those who know. Those who know how to implement ideas within the engine and requirements of the final product.

No idea is original, I'm a modder, I wouldn't mind if I helped out someone when they asked or brought something new to the fore. It's how new games are created. One idea here, one there, put together and sometimes you make something great.

That has never been the case with any mod before and I doubt it will be here. Although the best modders frequently get hired by the big game companies, that's another reason they do it. It's like building a portfolio of work for an artist.

as i said if others do the work should they not recieve some of the proceeds from dayz ? all well saying the community made or fixes it then they are helping sell the game. modders who create fixes or work should get rewarded for it same as rocket will be.

Yea that is how this works, but for someone who is a low level employee or interested in game design it can help build experience and get yourself noticed by a company. For most it is an unpaid hobby, many of us have things we enjoy doing without monetary rewards.

I think it's brilliant, Rocket is tapping into the fervor and creativity of the people he CREATED this mod for to begin with! It's synergy in action!! Allowing the community to contribute to the final product in itself says "I appreciate what you bring to the table" and I for one applaud him for it. No other game has had the kind of emotional effect on me like this game, one moment I am elated, the next my hands are sweaty and I am shaking from the sudden rush of adrenaline through my bloodstream...whatever Rocket is cooking up with the standalone WITH THE HELP OF THIS COMMUNITY, Will earn not only my beans but whatever dollar amount they decide to slap on the software. If I do indeed become a victim of post traumatic stress disorder like my wife claims is inevitable, will I be able to include the private mod dev's in the litigation?!?!

Lol, I wanted to say that but then you'll open the age old "WAAAAHHHHH, but I only bought Arma to play DayZ! WAHAHAHHA!" debate.

Hello there

I understand OP's point but don't agree. There are many things to like about the mod and many things to loathe. Modding enables us to tweak the game to our own personal preferences.

I probably wont invest much time in the stand alone or the same reason i don't play TOH. Without mods, for me the game, is flawed.

Modding is a hobby (one that can lead on to job opportunities) and should remain free, unpaid and open to all IMHO.

I am just going on what Rocket has said a couple of times on the forum and in interviews, the standalone will not initially be open to mods to cut down on hacking. There will probably be a point when they open it up, but the standalone will be developed by the BI not the modding community. The mod will remain as a separate project that could eventually look very different thanks to community involvement and for some reason people have to keep repeating that the free mod is free to far too many people on these forums.

Standalone isn't being opened up for the community to work on and contribute/modify the code, Rocket was talking about the mod.

You can't be serious when you say modders should be paid for modding a game (even if it improves some aspects of it). I've spent countless hours building maps and stuff for multiple games (made some famous maps for UT2004 and helped with the original red orchestra mod) and never thought about making money out of it, its a passion like playing music you know. It's all about doing things for the sake of it, of creativity and sharing your work and maybe get some guys liking what you do.

so on that thinking rocket shouldn't be paid ? or any of the others ? (isnt dayz a mod ? )

basically is any of the standalone content not made by the team devs ? have they made all content for standalone ? will any other modders be working on standalone ?

Rocket wasn't paid for the mod, he was hired to make the standalone game after he created the mod for free and it became a huge success. He is currently working on the mod in his spare time, which I imagine he has very little of with the standalone due out by the end of the year.

Dgeesio, WE are all getting a free game - YOU are going to have to pay for it I'm afraid to say
