Actually the M240 (FN MAG) is a "General Purpose Machinegun" this is because it's fairly heavy and long and it shoots 7.62x51mm NATO (the military equivalent of .308 winchester, mainly used in Marksman rifles). It IS portable and used by dismounted patrols but is often operated by two people at a time and is generally a bitch to hump around.
